Post by: cooperman on Friday 06 November 09 16:16 GMT (UK)
Just found via the 1911 census a relative (John Bolton & family) living in Bede House Row,Oakham.
Does anybody know if it still exists or are there any pictures in existence showing the 'row'?

Thank You

Hi Helen

My husband has some of the Love family in his tree originating from Ketton & Kimbolton in Huntingdonshire - I bet there is a connection somewhere.

I'll pop into Oakham museum next week to see if I can find Bede House Row.

Hi Susan

I'm beginning to think that Bede House Row must have been close to where I was born and grew up.  I've looked on the census docsand it appears to be close to St Johns and St Annes Church/hospital, in Gas St - later called William Dalby Street.  William Dalby Street ran onto Westgate and I think Bede House Row may have been in between.  I was born in 13 Westgate - possibly a stones throw away!

Oakham Council in their wisdom decided to build a large bridge over the centre of Oakham back in the 60s & 70s and slapped compulsory purchases on many of the houses in that area.  The empty houses soon became derelict and they knocked many of them down.  Fortunately, they ran out of money before they built the bridge and started to redevelop the neighbourhood in the 80s.  I suspect that Bede House Row was demolished as part of this redevelopment sadly.

I've attached an old photo of Westgate looking towards William Dalby St.  The bike is propped up against our house (no. 13).  In the background you can see an old stone wall infront of a greenhouse.  This stone wall belonged to St Johns and St Annes.  I think that may be Bede House Row may have been the row of houses between the car and the stone wall? Or it may have been on the opposite side of the road just past the pub called the Kings Head (you can't see it from this photo as it juts in but you can see the start of the next row of houses).

I was quite young when they knocked the houses down on the right hand side (the ones I think may be Bede House Row) but I remember that there you went through a passage and there were some other houses around the back too.  It was quite a poor area.

Hi Susan

You've started a challenge in our family - my sister thinks that Bede House Row may be at the other end of William Dalby St (Gas St) to the Westgate end.  She remembers an old disused cinema that had a large house next door (she thinks it may have been Bede House) and then a row of house in a little alley at the side - possibly Bede House Row.

I'll do a bit of digging when I visit Oakham - its got us all thinking now.

Jill
ps.  thank you for the Love family charts

Morning i googled Bede House Row Oakham and it brought up an estate agents website selling 'Thaxia1' which was once a row of 8 cottages converted in the 1990's so if you google like i did and it gives the estate agents details they might hold more info.

Hi Toni

I tried googling for Thaxia1 and I think it must have been moved from the Estate Agents pages; however the search results still came up with the address - the postcode was LE14 2SF, which is near Stapleford not Oakham.  So I think this must have been a different set of Bede houses than the ones near St Johns and St Annes.  There is another set near Lyddington too.

I've asked my mum to see if she can remember Bede House Row but no luck I'm afraid.  I think I'll have to take a trip to the Records Office when I get up to Oakham!

Hi both

Have you seen the British Pathe film site - they have a few films of old Oakham, I'm afraid it doesn't show Bede House Row but has got some great shots of Oakham High St, Dean St and the main park in Oakham - Cutts Close:

Hi Helen & Toni

We are the Leicestershire & Rutland Records office today - and guess what?  Bede House Row was later renamed Westgate - isn't that amazing.  So I was actually born on the road you were looking for!

I'll see if I can find some old photos of Westgate aka Bede House Row!

You will be able to find Bede House Row on www.maps.nis.uk.  It is on Rutland Sheet IX.NW revised 1928.  You will need to click on Rutland then OS six-inch England and Wales 1842-1952.

Hope this helps!

Thank you  - definite proof that Bede House Row was later renamed Westgate - I was born at No. 13!
