Title: William Darrall of Wellington
Post by: sgrollitt on Monday 09 November 09 16:02 GMT (UK)
William Darrall was born in Wellington (probably Dawley) in about 1830. He married Pheobe Powis in 1851 in Wellington (again, it might have been Dawley).

Can anyone please help me find out who his parents were? I have looked on the 1841 census and there was an 11-year old William Darrall who was a miner and lived in Coalmoor within Madeley. When I tried to look at the original census page, the wrong page was displayed. But I'm not sure this is the same William anyway. The family do seem to be located in Dawley.

Thank you,
Simon

you could order the marr cert
that would give you his fathers name and occupation

That is good advise from wozzle.

in the meantime I had a look around.

I see that they married at end of 1851, so should be there separately on 1851 census - have you found them there?
I couldnt see them - so went to 1861 to get a birthplace for William, but I couldnt see them there either!

have you the ref for them as a couple on any census after marriage?
plenty of Darrals and Powises in the area.

Thanks Jackie!

That gives his pob as Little Wenlock

which gives rise to 2 possibles in 1851

HO107 1989 33 18
21 son of Elizabeth. He is a miner  (ties up with the 1841 you found, mother there was an Elizabeth)

HO107 1989 13 18
21 lodger with the Beach family. He is a Puddler at Ironworks

If you get the marriage cert not only will it hopefully give his father, but also his occupation. So you can compare what he said his occupation was later in 1851 when he married with these two and hopefully see which one is likely to be yours!

Given that in 1861 he is a forgeman at Ironworks, then I would say the latter is most likely for him ( the lodger)

In 1881, William Darrall was an iron worker living in Lawley Village, Wellington with his wife and children.

I have sent off for William and Pheobe's marriage certificate.

Thank you for your help up to now :)

hi wozzle

see my reply number 4
there seem to be 2 guys bn Wenlock, and the one you have found in 1841 (samr as Simon found)  I think is the 'mine'r one with mum Elizabeth, whereas it is looking like Simon's guy is the other one, who worked in Ironworks throughout his life and was a lodger in 1851.
But I cant see that one in 1841 as yet.

Well done

Just need that marriage cert now to see if his father's name was John or William (probably be something else altogether just to confuse us!!!!)

The marriage certificate arrived.

William Darrall, a forgeman, married Pheobe Powis. William's father was William, a miner. Pheobe's dad was George, also a miner.

Brilliant

So it looks as if you have in 1841 with his dad.
And that the 1851 lodger is him (as the other one has mum ELiz., which in 1841 had dad John)

This only falls down if Wm's wife was also an Eliz! Need to compare siblings..  but I have to go now!

"Another local collier Edward Darrell of Holywell in Little Dawley was, according to Trinder & Cox, probably the same man mentioned in Abraham Darby I's accounts in 1709 which show an Edward Darrell employed to 'charck' coals and also clear ditches."

Edward's will of 1726 survives as does Eliza Darrell of 1668 (widow). Also Richard Darwall of 1666. All are of Dawley.

Hi,
We are researching our family tree and not only was this helpful because we finally got phoebes surname but it's very connected to our tree as all of our darralls seem to hail from somewhere around that general area. Most of them seem to hang about holywell lane.

I was wondering whether you had any further information pertaining to Darralls? Preferably further back, as we are stuck, however any information as to how to get past the 1690's would be nice too.

Many Thanks

Who have you got back to? I have a lot of C16th and C17th stuff for the Severn Gorge area - it may take me awhile.

We've got back to benjamin darrall of c1669 dunno who he married, I mean we can guess but he seems to have married several times. Don't worry about time. I have plenty.

He also comes from dawley magna, that sort of region if that helps.

Thanks.

Woops I meant 1696, sorry

I guess you have Edward's marriage in 1683 at Stirchley?

I would try the House of Lords record office to see if the 1642 Protestation for Dawley survives. If it does that will at least show you whether they were there at that time.

Unfortunately records for the northen side of the Severn haven't survived the Civil War as well as those on the southern side. More of a hot bed of recusancy!
