I am looking for Theophilus Minkey b abt 1868
Only information I have is 1891 census. It shows birth place as Poplar and age looks like 23. At this time living in Matthews household.
-
Just a thought, you need to read between the lines for this one.......
1st a Marriage to Elizabeth Matthews(ties in with 1891 Census)
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Sep 1887
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matthews Elizabeth Mile End 1c 757
MINKEY Theophilus Mile End 1c 757
Walker Robert Mile End 1c 757
WEBB Esther Rebecca Mile End 1c 757
2nd Maybe she struggles with Child Birth?
Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deaths Mar 1888
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MINKEY Theophilus 0 Poplar 1c 464
3rd Still struggles with Child Birth?
Births Jun 1890
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Minkey Caroline E*zabeth Poplar 1c 672
4th Complications after Child Birth? I assume a Death cert. would confirm.
Deaths Jun 1890
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Minkey Elizabeth 20 Whitechapel 1c 234
This would tie in the Minkey and Matthews families and account for Theophilus being a Widow in 1891.
Any thoughts?

Thanks Darren.
Yes that's them. I had found their marriage also from free BDM.
I have had some communication with another Matthews connection and they also believe that Elizabeth died in child birth.
I would really like to find parents of Theophilus Minkey.
There were Minkeys in Poplar 1881 but he doesn't appear
Unusal name but seems no one researching it.
You are right I really do need the marriage certificate. Not sure how I go about getting one , who to get it through etc. I'm in New Zealand.

You can order the Certificates online I'll just go and find the link

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
You can use the info from Free BMD to make this very simple

There's only 12 Minkey's in the 1881 Census 2 older people in Cornwall and the rest could possibly all belong to the same family and in theory they could all belong to the same family, if that's the case then they could well be Theophilus' family.
-
Thanks Darren.
I guess you are looking at the Minkey family with Lavinia as the Head. fairly large family. I'm also picking it's probably his family because if I remember correctly without looking for it again. The children appear to have been born Poplar.
I was wanting to get back beyond 1881 census in the hope of finding Theophilus with the family.
Thanks for the advice re ordering certificates.
Thanks again for all you help. This site is great!

I couldn't find Theophilus in 1871 or Lavinia's Family but that could be to do with Frederick Minkey who's on the HMS Duke of Wellington as a Petty Officer in 1881, at a guess Lavinia's Husband, the family may well be fairly well travelled.

Just in case you haven't got this......
1901 Census - 23 Flint Street, Bromley
Theophilus Minkey aged 33 Widow Occupation - Shipyard Labourer
(Still living with the Matthews Family

You would think with such an unusual name it would be easy to get info on this family,
I found this in the 1901 the census was taken in Bromley London
Theophilus Minky aged 65 born in Germany Head
Louinia Minky aged 62 born in Poplar, London, Wife
Emily Minky aged 19 born in Poplar, London, Daughter
and I think this is your chap in 1901 again census taken in Bromley London
Theophillis Minkey aged 33 born in Poplar, London, England
according to the image, he is still a widower and living in 126 Flint Street, and he is a Shipyard Labourer
Another Minkey Entry for the 1901 and again in Bromley
William Minkey aged 24 born in Poplar, London, Head
Charlotte Minkey aged 24 born in Poplar, London, Wife
1881 Poplar
Lavinia Minkey born abt 1840 in Poplar, Middlesex, Wife (Head)
Lavinia Minkey born abt 1864 in Poplar, Middlesex, Daughter
Caroline Minkey born abt 1871 in Poplar, Middlesex, Daughter
Ada Minkey born abt 1872 in Poplar, Middlesex, Daughter
Phoebe Minkey born abt 1874 in Poplar, Middlesex, Daughter
William Minkey born abt 1877 in Poplar, Middlesex, Son
Frederick Minkey born abt 1879 in Poplar, Middlesex, Son
Gertrude Osborne born abt 1881 in Poplar, Middlesex, (no note as to relationship with family)
I also found this Marriage...
MINKEY, Robert Theophilus

with a name like that he has to be connected :D
Will keep an eye out for any other connections
Best Wishes

1901 Census
Source - RG13/348
Registration district - Poplar
Sub-registration district - Bromley
Folio - 109
Page - 18
William Minkey aged 24 Head Born Poplar
Charlotte Minkey aged 24 Wife Born Poplar
Must be Lavinia's Son and living at 20 Flint Street, just up the road from Theophilus, surely too much of a coincidence!

Theophilus living at House Number 23(126 is the schedule No.)
William is a Cofectioners Laborer.
-
This has got to be them.
Does 1901 census give an occupation for Theophilus senior?
My Grandmother Maria Matthews used to talk about a Charlotte but Icould never match it to any of her immediate family.
Well done I think we've cracked it!
-
He's a shipyard Labourer, still trying to find Lavinia in 1901. :)
-
Have you tried
http://www.GenesReunited.co.uk
There's an Annie Minkey there born 1917 in Poplar, might be worth a try.
Good luck, please let me know if you get to the bottom of/prove who's who.
Happy hunting

Just seen all messages about Theophilus Minkey. My father knew Theophilus Minkey senior when he was a very old man living in Poplar. He was a tailor and lived to nearly 100. He lived in old age with 2 daughters - unmarried I think. Unfortunately I know nothing about next generation.
