Title: William & Mary MAYES to Australia 1851
Post by: johnP-bedford on Friday 13 November 09 08:46 GMT (UK)
William & Mary Mayes were assisted emigrants to South Australia & arrived on ship Catherine in 1851, they had with them 1 year old son Levi.

Are there any records that might show what became of them & if they had any further children.

thanks for looking John

Hi John,

Do you have Mary's maiden name? There is a William and Mary Ann LAMB having quite a few children in SA from 1854. (looks like about 8 ) They were residing north of Adelaide Salisbury - Gawler Plains

Thanks Kris; I meant to give more information but I was in a rush this morning.

William Mayes baptised 25/12/1828 Knotting Beds married Mary Lamb 1827 at Souldrop on 12/10/1847, Their son Levi born 1849 Knotting. On the Catherine's manifest they are recorded as Moyes.

His baptism says his parents were William Cox & Mary Mayes - but not that it was illigitimate, & the marriage entry says his father was William Cox. I thought from the baptism his father was William Cox Mayes - same as the extracted IGI entry.

Her parents were Levi Lamb - hence the name of first son.

There is a question over William's parentage - see my topic on the Bedfordshire page (Deighton/Cox/Mayes) so I'm hoping that the childrens' names may provide a clue. OK if one is called William that's not much help.

Regards John

Hi John,

Unfortunately our SA records can not clarify this. I have the death records but our death certs are very like your UK ones and do not list parents unlike other Australian Sates. Of course as with any submitted information, it is only as good as the submitter. I had to laugh at the BISA entry Nottingham Bedfordshire, instead of Knotting Bedfordshire.  ;D

MAYS William died 25 Jun 1881 Virginia Dist PtG 111 461. He was aged 54, status, relative not recorded, residence Virginia

MAYS Mary Ann died 10 May 1882 Gawler River Dist PtG 119 349. She was aged 53, a widow, residence Gawler River, relative Levi MAYS (son)

also the son William

MAYES William died 24 May 1866 Gawler Plains Dist Ade 23 373. He was aged 11, relative William MAYES (father) residence Gawler Plains.

I wondered if your baptismal entry may have said William MAYES son of William Cox and Mary ....... meaning it was a middle name but as you have viewed the original I guess this is not the case.

The name Cox has not been used in any of the names here. The only deviation seems to be Mays/Mayes which would be expected. I have checked Cox and Moyes for births - nothing. I suspect the name has been transcribed wrongly on the Ships List and to view the original it would probably be Mayes.

Cheers Kris  :)
