Title: Jersey lookup request Helleur/Amy family
Post by: bristol170 on Saturday 14 November 09 14:44 GMT (UK)
Hi

hoping someone can help with a few requests please for a friend who cannot travel herself? First is birth lookup for:

Anne Jeanne Helleur b. abt 1829, possibly St. Helier, dtr of Francois Helleur and Esther Amy

second is

Esther Amy b. abt 1806- we have no parent details, same lady mentioned above.

third is confirmation of a marriage date of

Elie Romeril and Marthe Helleur, which I have as 27 Jan 1744 St. Brelade, however I've seen a conflicting report taken apparently from a Société Jerriaise record suggesting a date in 1745, possibly in St. Helier, is correct?

 Any help gratefully received!

Hi Andy

I can see the baptism of Ann Jane Helleur on 11th May 1831 at St Helier Parish Church. Parents were Francois Helleur and Esther Amy. Godparents were Michel Francois Touzel and Ann Le Boutillier.

Finding Esther Amy's birth proved more difficult as it's such a common name.  I looked for her marriage and found that it took place at St Lawrence Church on 19th May 1827. Francois came from St Lawrence and Esther from St Helier. However, there are no Esther Amy baptisms in St Helier in 1806. The best I can come up with is 5th Mar 1794 to Jean Amy and Jeanne Romerill. Godparents were Jean Thomas Romeril and Esther Romeril.

Regardless of where you do the lookups, the indexes are the same as they are provided by the CIFHS. Elie Romeril and Mathe Helleur were married in St Brelades on 27th Jan 1744. However the actual index shows 27th Jan 1744/1745. I am told that this is because the CIFHS couldn't establish the correct year from the Parish Record. There are quite a few guesstimates in this register!!

Hi Stewart

Thanks very much indeed for that information- very greatly appreciated and I'm sure Liz will be delighted with it too! Interestingly both she and I are across the water in Guernsey but related to each other through the Helleurs of Jersey!

Again, many thanks for your time and effort,

  Andy

Hi there. I might be able to help you with this one.

I two am a direct descendent of Francis & Esther Helleur (nee Amy) through their son Francis Helleur born 1837. Esther had a brother Philip Amy. Their parents were Phillip Amy and Esther Carrel, the Carrel's were fron Normandy France. Philip and Esther had three children Anne Jeanne (some times listed as Jane) b 1831, Emelle Eleonore b 1834 and my Francis born 1837, Francis was a master mariner and died at sea, he married Mary Jane Connelly and they had three children and so the line goes on. I have both the Amy and Helleur trees if you are interested. This is the first time I have seen someone also related to this line of Helleur!

Hi!

I am so excited to find this!!!! We are from New Zealand, my Dad Murray Helleur is  5th generation NZ and is eldest son to Norman Clarence and Joyce Aimee Helleur (nee Hammond).  Dad is from the line from which I have been reading about in the forum!  I have been desperately trying to find information as I am off to France May this year, to purely see where Dads roots is from but we have had no luck with information!

The Helleur's arrived to NZ from (Jersey) we have been told and set sail landing in Akaroa, Christchurch, New Zealand.  Every Helleur in New Zealand is related.

Dad has done genealogy as well and would love to get in touch with others following the same tree!

Cheers Toni Helleur

hi tony - i am trying to assist my godmother who is in her 80s to trace her helleur ancestry - her grandfather was frederick helleur who married eliza harrington in nz - date unknown - they had the following children
florence b1858, elizabeth b 1860, ellen born 1862, george born c1864, eugenie b 1866, frederick francis born 1868, lily born 1870, rose adelaide b1872, may adelaide b1877, winifred b1882

my godmother is descended through lily helleur who married john stirling taylor in 1891 - they all lived in the canterbury region of new zealand

eliza helleur is buried at le bons cemetery nr canterbury

my godmother yvonne recalls her father john henry taylor telling her that his grandfather frederick used to sing to him in french - they believe he was a mariner/seaman and born in the channel islands but have not been able to trace his parents
does anyone know of this family and if so we would be grateful for any information about how we can obtain information about when they arrived in nz  - many thanks in anticipation - mirella

Hi Mirella

Yes that is our line.  My Dad (Murray Norman Helleur b 1955) Great grandfather is FREDERICK FRANCES HELLEUR who married SOPHIA SARAH HERBET.  Frederick is Lilys brother.  Which makes my Dad a direct relation to your godmother!

Frederick and Eliza married in 1858.  Frederick was born 1830 and died 9th aug 1904.  Dad has a photo of Eliza's grave, one of her children is buried there also.

We do not have any further info for Lily.  Can you let us know who she married, dates, children etc as this means we do not have info on Yvonne.

We do not have any information on Yvonnes fathers side TAYLOR sorry.  We can help with the HELLEUR line.

I have meet on this website a lady called Lisa who is also related and decends from the AMY family line from FRANCOIS HELLEUR who married ESTER AMY.  She is helping us fill in some blanks.

So it would be really great if all three of us keep in touch.

We live in Auckland.  Are you close by at all?

toni - thank you so very much for your response - feeling really excited that we are making progress now - yvonne will be delighted - she lives in the usa and i am in australia - i dont have any connection to the helleur family but am really interested in helping her with her research - lily helleur born 1870 nz died in rural nsw in 1923

in 1891 she married john stirling taylor and they had the following children
john henry taylor born 1891 (yvonne's father) married minnie margaret oxford in australia where yvonne was born -

alexander norman taylor born 1894 died gallipolli8/8/1915 - his name is inscribed on the nz memorial at chunuk bair turkey

violet mabel taylor born 1896 died manly nsw  1938
leslie stirling taylor born 1898 died ?
allan hood taylor born 1899 died 1978 australia
stillborn child born 1901
myrtle evelyn taylor born 1903 died ?

(have to get a couple of dates of death and marriages from yvonne)

do you know when frederick helleur arrived in australia?  yvonne thought he was a mariner but doesnt know much else except he was french

were his parents those mentioned above on this site - frederic and esther nee amy?

i couldnt find those details on the lds site

do you know anything about eliza harrington?

sorry for all these questions - i am feeling quite excited and will email yvonne straight away

looking forward to hearing from you again - kind regards ruth coomber

hi again toni - i need to correct a few things in my previous very excited email to you - i meant to say do we know when frederick arrived in new zealand - he was not in australia ever!    yvonne thinks they settled in the akaroa (?) area and all seemed to live around canterbury or dunedin

also i meant to say were his parents francois and esther ?

i saw from one of the other messages that there were three children but they didnt mention frederick - interesting to see one of the sons was a master mariner because yvonne thought her great grandfather was - wondering how to put her in contact with you - not sure she would find this site and move around it easily - thought i would give you her email address if that is ok - will just check with her first - regards ruth

Dad dug some info out!

Ship was called MONARCH left the London docks 19th Nov 1849.

Sailing went well until they reached Tasmania, where the Captain tried to run into Hobart as they were short on provisionings.  The ship was blown off course and hove to for 4 days.  Then the captain decided to sail around the North Cape for Auckland  which was the planned destination.  That evening the 5th March 1850, having been 106 days at sea we were in very rough seas and the rudder has broken away.  There was nothing for it, but to run with the wind driving the vessel south of Stewart Island.  On the 18th March, a temporary rudder was rigged by the carpenter and passengers in attempt to save themselves.  They eventually headed for Port Chalmers, all went well until the 24th March.  When off Cape Sanduers, the jury rudder broke away.  The vessel was imminent danger of going ashore.  Soundings was taken at 9.15pm, 25 fathoms.  10pm 12 fathoms and the  Captain gave the order to let the star board anchor go with the full length of chain.  Towards midnight the winds changed and blew off shore.  "Weigh anchor" up came the chain with no anchor for it had not been properly shackled.

Few more dramas happened.................

The vessel was met by boats with fresh supplies on the 1st April a mile from the heads of Akaroa Harbour.

Landed 2nd April 1850 in Akaroa.  41 settlers decided to stay in Akaroa, Frederic and Eliza being amongst that stayed.

Hope you enjoy this!

think i am a bit confused with the info from lisa on this site which refers to francois and esther helleur nee amy - is that another family altogether?

Yes Lisa branches off from FRANCOIS HELLEUR b 1802 he married ESTER AMY.

Now FRANCOIS father is FRANCOIS HELLEUR B 1768 married Suzanne Le Gros.

FRANCOIS brother JEAN HELLEUR b 1763 is FREDERIC FRANCOIS (who married Anne Pipon) father.

Ive colour coded, as you can see there is so many FRANCOIS'S AND FREDERIC'S AND FREDERICK'S!  no wonder we are confused!

Hi just stumbled across your data and read with interest on the Helleur infomation my nephew descends from Wilfred Le Bon Helleur.I always wondered where the Le bon came from and now I think I have the answer,
Le Bon is a place in New Zealand where a Frederick Helleur and his wife Elisha Harrington  lived. I am interested to connect the tree together as I think Frederick & Elisa maybe Wilfred's grandparents. Wilfreds parents were Annie & George.Any hep would be greatly appreciated. Please make contact or email me at * cheers Robyn

Hello
My Grandfather's Aunt is Violet Taylor. For some time I simply could not find her birth.

(As I have her death in 1933 in Australia and says her parents are Lily and John Stirling TAYLOR)

I thought she was born in Australia. Went to New Zealand BDM Online and found not only her's but her brothers and sisters.

John born 1891, Alex 1894, Violet 1896, Leslie 1898, Allan 1899 and Myrtle in 1903.

So went to Marriages Again jackpot. John Stirling Taylor married Lily Helleue.

Then I found this page.

As I said my grandfathers Uncle Walter Kelly married Violet Taylor in Australia in 1918. Sadly she died in 1933 very sure giving birth.

Also her brother Leslie died in Australia right here in Canberra, ACT in 1945.
And brother Allan died in 1978 also in Australia. (NSW)

That is where I am. Was trying to trace this TAYLOR family in Australia. No wonder wasn't getting anywhere.
They are from New Zealand.

Cheers
Rachel

Hello all,
I am a granddaughter of John Stirling Taylor. I first came across this site while looking for details on Lily Helleur (have come across various spellings) who was my grandmother. Allan Hood Taylor was my father. He was born 28/10/1899 in New Zealand and died 6/09/1978 in Taree NSW. He told us he was living in Mangaweka NZ before coming to Australia.
Rachel, I was particularly interested in your mention of Violet Taylor and Walter Kelly, I can remember Walter Kelly when I was a child, we used to call him Uncle Paddy.
I have been trying to find out if I have any other relations through my Auntie Violet.
I am of the understanding that Lily and John Stirling Taylor separated and she came to Australia with some of her children. It could have been about 1908 as my father told me he was 9 years old when he came to Australia.
It is possible that Lily went under the surname 'Wilson' for some time and my father told me she worked as a cook for the railways.
I am trying to obtain more information on John Stirling Taylor and Lily Helleur but that is for another time.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Nice to see all the connections to the Helleur line out there- my own direct connection is with Marthe Helleur b. 1720 in St. Brelade, Jersey who is my 5x gt grandmother and married Elie Romeril. Marthe was daughter of Matthieu b.1684 St. Brelade and his wife Marguerite De Gruchy b.1687 in St. Lawrence.
Apologies for being absent from the board for so long- I have a job and several other interests that take up most of my time in the summer!

Hi Bristol170. Esther Amy and Francois Helleur are my 4th Great Grandparents, so we descend from the same family. I have not had much luck in tracing the family of Marguerite de Gruchy, she is not listed on any of the de Gruchy pedigrees, infact I have wondered if she my have been a Gruchy instead of de Gruchy do you have any information on her? Hi cousin Lisa!

I'm afraid we're in the same boat regarding Marguerite, as I have only an approximate year of birth, a marriage date and a death date. I'm in Guernsey, so my family didn't move too far! I don't have any data on the Gruchy name in Jersey, save that there are some in the telephone directory!

Hi there,

This is my first time using this site so apologies if not using correct etiquette.
My Dad has just come back from a visit to Akaroa where he traced our name, Helleur. We now know that we are descended from the same Frederick Helleur that you have written about. I loved reading your post about how the Monarch ended up in Akaroa as we were trying to work that out.
Would love to talk more and see how we are connected,
 :)

Hi

My great grandmother Augustus Francis Helleur was the daughter of Francis Helleur and Mary Jane Connolly.
Mary remarried after Francis died , and migrated to NZ. On the Scimitar 1874
My records only note 2daughters , Linda mentions 3 , I'd be interested on more detail there.
My family story is Francis Helleur died st sea of scurvey. But that's all the info I have, I do have a photo of him.
Marys parents were Francis Connolly and Mary de St Croix. If anyone has more details on them, I'd appreciate it.
Also they migrated to Australia, if anyone can help re ship , date or destination?
Thanks Rob

Hi Rob12 you are on the same line of descent as myself.
Frances & Mary Jane are my 3rd Grt Grandparents.
The third child you are inquiring about was Isabel Emelle De Ste Croix Helleur Baptised 3 Feb 1862 at St Lawrence and buried at St Helier 5 Dec 1866 so she died as a child.
I descend from Mary Anne Jane (Annie) Helleur, Augustus Francis sister. I would love a copy of a photo of Francis. He was a Mariner and died at sea on 22 Feb 1867 at Quebec he was only 30 years old. I have an extensive tree of both lines. Seems we are closely related.
