I recently changed ISP and got a new laptop at the same time. Rootschat is in my favourites list but I find I am unable to access Help/Surnames/Library/Shop.
I've not tried Chatterbox or Logout as I do not use those.
Can anyone offer any advice/suggestions please? Simple language as I have no computer expertise. ;)
Thanks,
Nanny Jan

are you getting any error condition message / manifestation ? or just that the pages wont load?
The Help facility is part of the www.rootschat domain, but the others are different domains ... is there anyway you have set up your browser to reject any domain names? Or perhaps a Firewall setting?

No error messages; the items just do not appear.
Computer-savvy son is due to visit in a few days, I'll get him to check browser etc.
Thanks for the advice,

Just found that I can not get any links in RC postings to work either! ???
Just hope son can visit this week..........
Nanny Jan

Long shot but sometimes it fixes problems such as these but have you tried unplugging your router, leave it off for 3 or 4 minutes before plugging it back in again. Wait a further couple of minutes for the internet connection to work again and see what happens.
-
Thanks for the suggestion; will have a go later!
Nanny Jan
-
Hi Alan b,
Tried the "unplug router trick" but it did not cure the problem; fingers crossed that son will visit soon.
Nanny Jan
-
Have tried various suggestions sent by son who is not able to visit as family are all struck down bu flu.
Is it now time to call in a local computer/internet fixer?
All advice very welcome. :)

What browser are you using? I have some sites that don't like Firefox or Internet Explorer so have to use other browser for them- although Rootschat fine on both for me.
-
Hi,
Internet Explorer; same as on old laptop. I've got the whole family on the case at the moment! ;)
Thanks for the suggestion, will pass it on.

I wonder whether this is to do with the changes introduced on Roots chat last week? When did you get the new computer?
-
I have just clicked on 'Help' and it ain't there so it isn't your fault. Surnames, Library and Shop are all working so give them another go and tell us exactly what happens when you do that.
Cheers, falcybe
I'm going to send this message to Trystan, I hope that is correct for this board.
-
Just tried them all, with the obvious exception of "logout" All working OK for me. Using IE7
-
I can get in from the front page of RootsChat but this is what I get when clicking on Help from within "technical help":
As you see, the path is wrong.
-
Hi all,
I got the laptop last week, brand new with Windows 7. When I try to acess the buttons listed.........nothing......no click.
At least I can access Rootschat ;D
Thanks for trying to help this old granny :-*

Think I should go back to the supplier with new computer, something may need a tweek. You have just postponed my transfer to W7!
-
Hi Redroger,
I'm beginning to think along those lines. Son advised Windows 7 ::)
Nanny Jan
-
How it should be
-
Yes, Windows 7 does look good, but in view of this and a few other problems that I am aware of (not on Rootschat) I shall wait now and let things settle down somewhat before I take the plunge. It's quite a leap from XP, but then, not as far as the one I made from W98 to XP!
-
Those options all open a new window rather than navigate to a new page. I wonder whether it is something like needing to allow popups. Do you see a yellow bar with a message appear when you try to access Help/Library/Shop ?
Harry
-
Harry,
Nothing at all happens when I try to access.............not even a "click" !
Hope to speak to the supplier tomorrow.

Surname interest has now gone off duty just tried to check my surnames.
Could not connect to database !
RootsChat CONNECT_ERROR2
-
Just tried SIT and it's working for me.
-
Could not connect to database !
RootsChat CONNECT_ERROR2
that comes up now and again, but when I click again, it's OK :)
-
I have just clicked on 'Help' and it ain't there so it isn't your fault.
I've fixed the help button now, so hopefully that will work :)

Thanks Trystan but still not working for me; will be speaking to the supplier today.

If you hover the mouse pointer over the help button, what do you see as the address in the bottom-left of your internet browser?
-
Hi Trystan,
The address in bottom left is:
http://www.rootschat.com/help/index.php
Not able to contact supplier until Monday.
Nanny Jan
-
If you click on the right mouse button, you may see an option "Open Link In New Window"?
-
Tried........and failed.
Nanny Jan
-
Nanny, here I am guessing a bit because I don't have windows 7 but in the IE menus at the top of this page, under View do you have something called Panning Hand? And if so, is it ticked on? And if so, tick it off and see if you can select links.
cheers, falcybe
-
Hi,
Dont appear to have anything labelled View :-\ ..............
Thanks for the suggestion.

hi nanny jan
from Mazi's OH
this is really really stupid of me, and everyone will laugh but you say absolutely nothing happens when you click on help etc is your new computer set to only accept double clicks.
It really is going to be a simple setting somewhere, but IE7 is new at the moment even to your supplier.
youve been using rootschat for four years, so its either your new computer or your web browser, did you have BT with BTyahoo before
regards mazi
-
Hi,
Son set up computer so don't about clicks but have tried single and double!
I was on dial-up before, using Tesco.
Have a similar problem on Genes.......have to type in address to see family trees etc. Not too worried about that as I will not be renewing my subs.
Thanks for the ideas,
Nanny Jan
-
from mazi's OH
now thats interesting, we were on dialup with BT before we got broadband, paid BT to set our broadband up but even now we still get links trying to dialup, in fact it happened twice when i was posting the above, of course nothing happens because we dont have a dialup connection any more
THIS IS ALL RUBBISH COS YOUR NEW ONE NEVER HAD DIALUP DID IT!!
I'll try again, rootschat and G are both sites where you login, I wonder if your security settings are too restrictive as they will need to check your cookies again for the new address before sending the page to make sure you are still you , as it were. sometimes we have found that when you go somewhere from favorites you need to "refresh" the page before you can do things but you need an expert, but Windows7 is new to everybody.
wish I could help more
If as you say absolutely nothing happens when you click on help etc, the page you are looking at does not change at all this has to be a starting point, something however slight should change.
I know nothing about win7 so even if I knew the answer I couldn't tell you how to correct it,hopefully someone else will
regards mazi's OH
-
Thanks again mazi's OH.
Been trying the supplier's helpline on and off all day.................just muzak......grrr. Their website is of no use to a computer-phobe like me. ;)
Will wait for son to get over the flu and find time to travel down to sort it out.

UPDATE:
After several days attempting to find a phone number eventually got through to the supplier (D**l), went from tecnhical support to software department.............an hour plus later.................still find links and buttons not working..........
Hate to think what the cost of that call was :o
Nanny Jan
-
Nanny jan,
1)can you click on a link to other sites on the web or are they all not functioning?
2)And at the top of IE can you see the menus: File Edit View etc like in my photo? And if you can see them, can you click on them and open the menus?
-
Nannyjan, How long have you had the machine now? Suggest you return it to supplier as not fit for purpose, or alternatively contact Trading Standards with the same end in mind.
-
Falcybe, I can get to sites via my favourites list but any sub sites (like my GR tree) ........no
On my old laptop I had the File Edit View options but on this........nothing
Redroger; I've had the machine in use for just a couple weeks; I had a delay connecting to the internet because the router I was sent was........faulty! After some days of system checking/fault finding the telephone company decided to send a new one. ::)
The "not fit for purpose" is now being actively investigated.
Thank you both for suggestions and advice. :-*
Nanny Jan
-
Though legally they have no case, I believe retailers become stroppy after 28 days, so get cracking!
-
But the delay was due to the faulty router and the time taken to get another one..........just at the tail end of the postal strike (and backlog).........
Nanny Jan
-
Get in touch with the supplier ASAP and if they object to your claim go to Trading Standards Department of Local Council, and tell them the whole story including the story of the delays.
-
I telephoned the supplier again but the Software dept. only works Mon-Fri; however I do have a "case number" and was asked to phone back on Monday.................tricky when I'm working.
Watch this space........

They will try to hide behind it Jan, so make as sure as possible that you get your complaint in within the 30days they always try to hide behind.

Actually I found the opposite. Daughter's laptop started acting up just before it was a year old. Reported problem to Dell and they fixed some things online but took it back to replace other bits. Came back with new motherboard, etc. but webcam still not working properly, recalled it again and after third time (when I said daughter and laptop would soon be leaving the country) sent repairman to house (and it took all of 10 minutes for him to replace webcam part). Seems to be working okay now (I'm sure I would have heard if it wasn't).
-
RESULT ;D
At last the problem has been resolved......only to find that surnames and library are closed for maintenance!
Bank manager will not be pleased that I can now access the shop though ;)
Nanny Jan
-
Nanny Jan.
i am very pleased you are up and running again BUT you have left us all in Limbo. you did not tell us the cause of the fault.
it is like reading a book and finding the last page torn out. :( :'(

I don't know!
Dell support via a telephone call; think I had to re-install Windows. Done remotely and took most of the morning but seems fine now.
Just got to get son to install Office and I'll be well away. ;D
Does that help?
Nanny Jan
-
Thank you Nanny Jan.
having been following this thread i was curious as to the cause of the pc failure. hope you have many trouble free hours on your pc.
gooddog
-
That was the plan but since the remote control session by Dell yesterday the touchpad or mouse moves the text when typing to random areas. ::) Typing anything is taking a long time.........
Have installed Office but now cannot get Outlook Express to set up with my email....................I'll be grey by Christmas.
Nanny Jan
-
Jan, Why not abandon MS Office and download Open Office? Free and just as comprehensive in scope.
-
Hi Redroger,
Have finally sorted out problems with Office etc. I was reluctant to change as that was the system I had used for some years (I work from home).
Now have a "jumping text" problem to deal with.
Have given Dell 3 options (this happened after their remote control session). They fix, they replace machine with another or give refund, they pick up the bill for local computer repairman. Waiting on their reply now. ;)
Nanny Jan
-
Please post their response. Interested to see what they say.
-
So will I! ::)
Nanny Jan
-
Oh dear......so much for that "fix".......back to square one with no access to buttons or links in postings.
I'm getting very cross >:(
Nanny Jan
-
Jan, Back to post 51?
-
It might come to that. ::)
Nanny Jan
-
RESULT no.2
Internet Explorer removed and with Firefox...............no problems ;D
Nanny Jan
-
Good, but I have just ditched by Virtual Box Ubuntu system as it was taking too much memory and not loading reliably, when I reloaded Ubuntu as a dual boot system by WUBI I am now unable to get Firefox.
-
Sounds very technical to me.......the changeover was done by my computer repairman. ;)
