Title: Reids of port gordon
Post by: Whenu on Tuesday 17 November 09 09:57 GMT (UK)
Hi all, I have started to follow my family history and have landed on the Port Gordon history web-page which is very informative.
I am trying to find the family of Robert Sutherlad Reid and his parents George Reid and Anne Sutherland, this is as far as I got then lost the trail in the Port Gordon index
The other side of the family, the Coulls has been traced back to the founding of Port Gordon and I would like to see if it goes back further, cheers and thanks

Hi Whenu

Welcome to Rootschat    ;D

Is this the REID family you mean?

from IGI
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
Alexander REID b 2 Jan 1871, Rathven, Banff - George REID & Anne SUTHERLAND
Robert REID b 13 Mar 1873, Enzie, Banff - Parents: George REID & Anne SUTHERLAND

Marriage: George REID & Anne SUTHERLAND - 8 Oct 1869, Enzie, Banff

I think I see them in 1871 Census in Port Gordon - do you have this, or any other Census already already? If we can know what you do have already and what you're looking for next (for the REIDs and the COULLs) , hopefully we can help!

Cheers
AMBLY

Thanks for the prompt reply.
A cousin of mine has done a chart and has actually got a another two generations back but the se two entries of yours are right;
"Robert REID b 13 Mar 1873, Enzie, Banff - Parents: George REID & Anne SUTHERLAND

Marriage: George REID & Anne SUTHERLAND - 8 Oct 1869, Enzie, Banff"
We have their parents marked down as Alexander Reid and Janet? Reid and Robert Sutherland and Magaret Thomson.
I've attached a copy of the chart I have, cheers

married 1899 (where?)
Robert Sutherland REID b 13 Mar 1873 Port Gordon. died 1950 Gisborne

His parents:

Her parents:

Hello... I see this post was a while ago... were there any more updates and progress made on the lines?. I am from the line of Thomas Reid,b 1882,parents George Reid and Anne Sutherland)who married Christina Flett in 1911 . I missed there being another son, Robert..never came up with his siblings on ancestry...... good news for me, ,I will check familysearch to see if he comes up there......
Any further info on the Sutherlands and Robertsons would be great.. and I am a little stuck on Margaret Thompson. I have reviewed Peter Reid's website...also, with the Reid's. Thomas ,according to family knowledge had a son Peter probably in 1921. the year Christina died, who was raised by an uncle (maternal/Paternal?) in Cheshire. Anyone seen a paper record of Peter?... would be truly thankful....

Thank you in advance for your time and attention!

Sal...

Hi Sal, I've since found out that Robert and Margaret Reid came to NZ via the US, leaving England in 1919 and being in Detroit, Ill. on the 1921 census.
I haven't managed to go back much on the Sutherland side, maybe to Edinburgh via Mortlach, Banff in 1776.
Can't help you on Peter Reid (1921), cheers, Lance

Hullo Whenu,
I am the grandaughter of Robert  Sutherland and Margaret  Coull Reid and I too am starting to find out more about my Father's family so was excited to find your message. My grandparents came to NZ via the USA-Detroit, where grandad and my father had gone to find work- they settled in Gisborne, NZ with their family of three. Violet, George and Peggy, not sure of exact date but  suspect mid-late 1920's-my father was involved in the Napier earthquake in 1931. Violet  married Douglas Grayson Menzies, Peggy(Margaret) and my father George Sutherland better known as Ernie Reid were at working age on arrival in NZ.  My grandparents-Robert and Margaret are buried in Gisborne  and died in 1950 and 1951 respectively.  Their children-George(Ernie) died in 1983 Violet died in 1984 and  nowam unsure of Peggys date of bereavment.
The family came to NZ at the bequest of  Doug who was part Maori and met Violet  in Scotland while recovering from war wounds. My father- George Sutherland married Rhoda Smith in Napier  in 1936 a :)nd they had two daughters-, both daughters have families and live overseas.
Great to get news of my great grandparents- thank you all

My father- George Sutherland married Rhoda Smith in Napier  in 1938 and they had two daughters-Joanna and Patricia, both daughters have families and live overseas.
Great to get news of my great grandparents- thank you all

Welcome to Rootschat.     We are related as well, your grandmother (Phimister) was my mother's aunt.   I would suggest you remove names of the daughters, as it is a policy of Rootschat not to have names of living on the board.    Just go to your post, click on the modify button, remove the names and click on save.    You just need two more posts, then we can exchange details through the PM system.  Now I can fill in some gaps, for the NZ ones that I can't complete.

Whenu is out of town at the moment, but will respond when he returns.

Cheers
KHP

EDITED  You have been in my tree for ages.

Hi Kay,
I'm glad you have got in touch with Whenu, as he and I have been in contact, and discovered our relationship and he has very up to date information on Doug Menzies, the Menzies clan and whereabouts of the remaining family members.
I've done a family tree from information from Whenu and elsewhere- happy to send that to you if you wish and to send on my personal email address?
You may be able to answer the following which has puzzled our family for years- did Grandad Reid- Dougs' father in law every go to the USA and work in and around Detroit that you know of?
Regards Aztec

I got this when checking on the Wayback Machine Internet Archive https://web.archive.org/web/20210518020154/http://charlesflett.co.uk/genealogy.htm

Not sure which part of the website you are trying to access now. This is the link to main Wayback Machine home page https://archive.org/web/  You can then add the website address in the search box at the top. The link that I added above will take you to the 'Genealogy' section.

The site is no longer available unfortunately, as you can see when you try to log in to their old address. You might want to consider saving what you need for future reference from the Wayback Machine site.
