.....And, Bob Dawson lists both Barker and Noble as pretty well spread  ;)

Barker, he found in Yorkshire, among other places. Noble he has down for NTH, and a very long time ago. But, there it is. Perhaps others can expand on that?

Cathay; When I was younger (Much younger ..... God almighty; So Much Younger!  ;D) I plainly recall the moment when I asked my Gt. Aunt if it was Burge or 'Burch' / Birch. She was quite categoric: BURGE.

Her mother, 'Polly Burge', in my avatar there, married Bill HUNTLEY. My Gt. Aunt recalled her days travelling with them. One of her brothers being born in a stable, somewhere outside of Chichester.

Through some of Polly's siblings, I've got Their parents down as a Burge from the west country. And there the trail goes cold.

However, there's a man out there who has his own line of Burge back to the stone age and down to tomorrow. We've compared notes and excrutiatingly strong 'circumstantial' evidence cries out that his and mine are the same line. Hundreds of Burge's out there. But our lines walk and talk like a very particular duck. Quite distinct from the others.

One more generation back and I'm sure we could make the clasp. I have kids who are probably Polly's aunts and uncles to be. But, my trail's gone cold (http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n201/ptpc/wallbash.gif)

Hi Sorcha,

Merry Christmas.

I have one Nobel in my tree, don't know if this will help. But she was a Gypsy/Hawker from the Yorkshire area.

Jessie Nobel: b: abt 1840.
She married:
Alexander McKenzie: Coal Merchant dates unknown I'm afraid.
(Details from Daughters marriage Cert'.)

They had a daughter Jeannie  McKenzie b: 1874 in Leith, Edinburgh. Occ Hawker

She was the second wife of Matthew Hartley: b: abt 1845 in York. Occ: Hawker of Baskets
They married on the 15/04/1895 in Aberdeen.

I've not researched this side yet, so do not have that much info....might have a go though  :)

Jane.

Hi, I know this is an extremely old thread, but I thought I would post on here rather than start a new one, due to the relevance of some of the comments!

I am trying to trace my paternal grandmother and her family, but have got stuck!

She was Kathleen Goodwin b1909 dorset d1967 Plymouth
Married Edward Thomas O'Riley 1928 Plymouth
Had a brother Albert Goodwin b1905 who married an Irene Burr
I also believe her father was called Albert Goodwin, but I can find no trace of him nor her mother!

Can anybody please help?

Many thanks in advance, Squizzles!!  ;D

Marona; Thirty five years ago, I was sat in one of the Welsh Price's trailers, chatting and examining old photo's of their family wagons on the road.

I'm pretty sure that was Peter. It was central south coast and they were stopping in company with the Welsh Lee's et al.

One of the Price's also had a gorgeously flash trailer, on that site at that time. Blue and chrome! A lovely photo exists of it, today, on the 'Gypsy Trailers' site.

Sadly, all so long ago, lord knows what further assistance I could now be. Feel free to shout though  :)

Hi All!
My maternal side is largely Winter, Cunningham and Longbottom. I have a 2nd cousin Jacob Winter that married Christiana Swales. My people mostly hailed from the North. My grandfather (Andrew Winter) evidently moving South to the Croydon area where he married my grandmother Grace Mary Longbottom. Andrew's parents were William Winter and Ann Cunningham. On the UK census 1901, their address was in Hitchin, Hertfordshire...in address column includes the word 'caravan'.
I only just found out a few months ago that my grandfather was Romany. Seems this was pretty much something my mom and her siblings didn't know or kept silent about. Mom brought me to America when I was 13 months old (back in 1947)....so I didn't get to know my Brit family. Met them briefly when I lived there for a short while, when I was 18. Though she did talk often of her dad and how he sold stuff. My mom's birth certificate has her dad's occupation as 'Hawker'.
Has been an amazing last few months for me.  :)

Re - Burge gypsy - Northern England and Southern Scotland. I have an ancestor who was arrested near York in the 1600's. His crime was 'driving a gypsy caravan', so I'm guessing being Romani was outlawed at the time. I don't really know how I'm connected, but I'm pretty sure I am another one who has come out of the woodwork. One of my great-uncles/cousins was named Lou Burge, who lived in Victoria, Australia. He had the typical gypsy colouring and is only recently deceased. If anyone could tell me more about the Roma Burges I would be very appreciative. On my ancestry DNA profile I received some interesting news - connections to a group of people from India/Nepal. I'm guessing this is my connection. I will try to see if I can unearth the exact names and details of the person who was my ancestor. On My Heritage, I have just had another person confirm their connection to me. He also is of Romani heritage. His name is Sean Atkinson. Knowing my grand-father's family, it is no great surprise to me that there is Roma heritage. Too many coincidences re Roma belief, customs and lifestyle.

I'm a Buck from australia my father is from Mansfield and my mother from forrest of dean area. Both claim they are from gypsy lineage but I haven't been able to find much documentation from my father's lineage unfortunately.
All I know is Buck from Mansfield married a heaven and moved to Perth Australia around the 70s. Dad was 4 and he left home when he was 13 moved to south australia Adelaide. So even at that my father knows very little about his ancestors.
