hi everyone...my greatgrandfather died at 24 st.vincent street, glasgow.
i have looked into it and cannot seem to find evidence at any time of this place being a hospital!!
can anyone shed any light?

Hi, do you have a date of his death? Maybe we can find him in the censuses? What makes you think he died in a hospital? If there's a death certificate, it will give the place of death & also his usual residence. Sorry I'm not familiar with Glasgow but there are plenty of old maps to view on www.nas.gov.uk.

In 1899, this address became the offices of The Evening Citizen newspaper, according to the ever-reliable Wikipedia.
No record of when they ceased using it.

The Evening Citizen was at St. Vincent Place. I've looked on the valuation rolls and cannot find 24 St. Vincent Street.

Just came upon another post on the Lanarkshire board entitled 7 Bridgegate Glasgow. The 3rd post mentions a manse on St Vincent St, maybe the poster Skoosh will be able to help you.

The 1927 directory appears to list 24 St Vincent Crescent as a private house - the sole name listed is that of Robert Croal.
The 1943 directory has possibly several listings for the address
at 24 Mclaughlan Misses A , Young G, Rattie J
at 24a Kennedy Mcleod & Company Ltd
and Chalmers & McGill

Hi,
Think my mother-in-law had family living near this address, if not this exact address. Will check tomorrow. It runs from Argyll Street at Finniston Street, curving round to run parallel with Argyll Street. Was there in May to take pics, so will look that out too. Not a hospital. Flats in a long terrace.

My family were at No 26 which is still there. 24 has gone and looks luke some kind of garage/car rental place.
Type the address into google earth. The open space above the railway line would have been where 24 was. The preservation document quoted above gives a good description of the place. No hospital in sight so he would have died at home - or that of someone elses.
Why do you not think he was living here? Remember it was just after the war and many people were not where you might have expected them to be. I have found relatives in the most unexpected places! Do you have any other evidence to suggest he should be living elsewhere?
Why do you think he should have died in hospital? If you think he might have been ill enough to have been in hospital, you could write to the hospital archives c/o The Mitchell Library to see if they have any information.

I know I am replying to an old chat but I just found the forum while trying to locate the current owners of 24 St. Vincent Cres., Glasgow. My grandfather was born in this exact house in 1918 and in 1919 the family emigrated to Toronto, Canada. In 2012 my family took a trip to Scotland and this was the first place we visited. 24 St. Vincent Cres is indeed still standing and is a family home, built in the 1850's and is three stories tall. I'm not sure who the tenants have been since then but I can attest that it is not a hospital so likely his family home is where he passed.
I've attached a photo of our family outside the door to 24 St. Vincent Cres.
In July of 2018 my parents hope to go back to the house to mark 100 years since my grandfather was born in the house and my parents are hoping to connect with the current owners of the house.

Hope I'm getting this into the correct spot..... replying to a post asking the surname of my father who was born at 24 St. Vincent Crescent on July 16, 1918. His name was Robert Martin.... we'll be in front of the building sometime on the morning of July 16, 2018 to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday....

It must have been sub-divided, in 1915 VRs there are 6 tenants listed

I have only my Dad's birth certificate and a picture that he had taken outside the building a number of years ago. I was under the impression that the Martin family occupied all of 24 St. Vincent Crescent, but it must have been divided into flats even in 1918. Unfortunately, as you would expect, none of the family who occupied the residence at that time are still alive to clarify the situation....

The Glasgow Herald has 'adverts', for example 29 August 1900, for:
Large bedroom. Suit two... 10s weekly. 24 St Vincent Crescent, two up.
which seems to confirm that even before 1918, number 24 was sub divided.
