Title: Mahalia RUMBELOW, Victor Harbor
Post by: alijet on Friday 20 November 09 16:43 GMT (UK)
Hi there,

Mahalia was born 5 Dec 1840 in Mildenhall, Suffolk and emigrated with her parents and siblings on board the Pestonjee Bomanjee to Victor Harbor, Australia. I have been able to follow her parents and siblings lives but have come unstuck with Mahalia. Can anyone tell me who her husband was. I have a choice of 3 and am very confused as Mahalia Rumbelow can't be that common a name. Mahalia died 21 Jan 1879 at Encounter Bay.

Thanks and regards

Alison

Alison,

I don't know quite when I'll have time to get to the library, but I can access the original Encounter Bay BDM records if that is of any help to you.

Also there are marriages and births for some of Mahala's children if you are interested in having those.

I'm trying not to drag in red herrings here, but this man JOHN WEYMOUTH did catch my eye as being of the same name and also noteworthy in his achievments in the area.
 He arrived earlier than Ephraim

Hi there me again :P,

Cain Jelliff - who is he? The Rumbelow's offspring must of thought very highly of him as he keeps cropping up in their history. I typed his name on the internet but apart from Grave Secrets, nothing to show. Is he important in the role of founding the modern Australia? Any ideas, just curious?

Hi again,
Cain Jeliff was married to Alice Rumbelow.  He was a sailor and ran a very successful fishing business with his brother in law Malen Rumbelow.  Cain Jeliff drowned when he tripped and fell overboard during a storm at sea near the Murray mouth on 2nd January 1877.  He is buried at Victor Harbour Cemetery.

He also helped to organised the first Regatta and Water Sports at Victor Harbour on New Year's Day 1869.

The 'Southern Argus'  has an obituary for Cain Jeliff.  I don't have all of it but in part it describes him as quiet and inoffensive and "in the domestic relations of husband & wife perhaps there was no happier pair amongst us, therefore the grief of the bereaved wife is very great".

I've been trying to get on here off and on during the day, but R/C has been down for some reason.

There is a book called 'The Rumbelows of Encounter Bay - 150 years of the family in Australia' and is a wonderful resource.  Your local library may be able to get it in for you.

Have to dash - back soon.

Thankyou Chris. Looking at the dates I think this could be son or even grandson of one of the original 9 children who came from Ireland.

I am hoping to find the death dates of their parents William and Mary [Ellis ] Bolger and the names of the 9 children, 6 girls and 3 boys.  If the girls married I am of course looking for different surnames .  Some , if not all appear to have gone to Tas c 1831/2.   Looking at the Tas. records there are several possibilities but no proof at this stage
Thankyou again , it all adds to the story.

I am still struggling to find any info on William and Ann [Ellis] Bolger and the names of their 6 daus and 3 sons  who went to Tas  during  1830s
Some possibilities are Edward Ellis Bolger b c 1808 Ireland , Was in Tas  1840.   Died when /where.
In 1841 well known Quaker George Walker wrote to Anna Maria Bolger at Westbury Tas, can anyone identify who she is ?

Mary Jane Bolger (nee Ellis) should be Mary Ann.  I do have a copy of her death certificate.

Hi there
Although i am very late to this thread, i am hoping that someone spots it.
I am descended from Annie Geary (via her daughter Kate Bishop, from her third marriage).
I believe the Anna Maria Bolger that Quaker George Walker wrote to at Westbury Tas would probably be her but the marriage date(s) i have are 1842 (and 1846).
I am trying to find out what happened to Robert Bolger - i believe he drowned.
I knew that Annie had gone back to Adelaide on "Punch", but i have a Tas marriage for her from 1851 to Robson Ebenezer Thomlinson who was a trooper and was transferred to Encounter Bay. I don't know what happened to him (yet) but she was married again to Port Elliot blacksmith George Bishop in 1858 by the (local) Bible Christian minister. I think i have found him in West Terrace Cemetery - died 1869 aged 48. She didn't have much luck with husbands it seems.
She died Annie Maria Bishop in Adelaide in 1910 aged 86 years.

G'day jenjen
I have done extensive research on the Bolger family and would be happy to assist you. Robert Bolger died in April 1850 at sea. He was a crew member aboard the Lady Denison which disappeared whilst travelling from Launceston to Adelaide. It is possible that the 14 prisoners who were aboard may have taken control of the ship. Robert Bolger & Annie Geary had 3 children but only the son married. Robson Ebenezer T(h)omlinson died 10/4/1856. He & Annie had 3 children. I also have George Bishop buried in West Terrace. I believe that Annie & George Bishop also had a son, Felix, on 23/3/1862 but I have been unable to find out what happened to him.
Please let me know if there is any way I can assist you more.
Cheers

G'day Morrie,
In Oct 2010 you asked for the death dates of William & Mary Ann (nee Ellis) Bolger & their children. My research shows - William probably died in Ireland prior to 1828, Mary Ann d. 25/3/1842 in Melbourne, Mary Ann d. 30/11/1869 in Brighton, Victoria, Charlotte (Greene) d. 10/8/1882 in South Melbourne, Eliza Jane d. 6/3/1872 in St Kilda, Edward Ellis probable death June 1842 aboard the 'Edward' between Circular Head & Launceston, Theophilus Henry d. 6/10/1899 at Petersham NSW, Frances (Pittman) d. 29/3/1862 at Brighton, Vic, Harriet (Smith) d. 5/12/1861 at St Kilda, Robert d. at sea April 1850 & Emily (Pittman) d. 22/2/1878 at Melbourne.
I hope that this helps.
Cheers

Hi Jennie,
I am also a direct descendent of Kate Bishop (and of course Annie Geary).  My mobile is 0499658764.

My grandfather was George Harold Holland, one of Kate's sons.  I have Kate and Thomas's dining table.  I have visited Woodhurst when I was young.

I have some family charts.

Best wishes,
Geoff Holland

Hi Austin,
Kate Bishop married Thomas Holland who was Mayor of Unley (Adelaide) for a time.

Kate's mother was Annie Geary from Cork in Ireland.  She married Robert Bolger who died at sea (mutiny off the coast of Tasmania?).  She then married Thomlinson who also died.  Her third husband, who was Kate's father, was George Bishop, originally from Liverpool, UK.

Cheers,
Geoff Holland

There is a book called 'The Rumbelows of Encounter Bay - 150 years of the family in Australia' and is a wonderful resource.  Your local library may be able to get it in for you.

I have been trying to get a copy of this book, but it does not appear to be available anywhere anymore.

The only copy I have located is at the State Library of SA - it cannot be borrowed I have had to book a reading session to look at it.

Hoping to do that tomorrow and, if it's good, would be keen to still get a copy but no idea where/how?

Never mind - read the book on Thursday and was disappointed to find 99% of it was family tree.  Lots of detail about each person, it was fascinating don't get me wrong, but I was hoping for more about what the Rumbelows did.  They clearly played a major, MAJOR role in a very wide range of aspects to Encounter Bay and Victor Harbor... but I can only dig up very small bits of information, was hoping to read a full story about it.

I can't remember what was available in the Victor Harbor Library with information about the Rumbelow family, Tillsy, but if you get in contact with my old Family History group,
http://encounterbayfhg.org.au/
someone may be able to help you.

Do you have any of the Rumbelow obituaries? The group has collected obituaries and reports of deaths  and published them in books and on CD.
