What do people think about an Auckland Rootschat meeting?
Am not sure on dates yet but thought i would start a thread and get some ideas from you guys.
It would be lovely to put names to faces etc
Those out of Auckland are most welcome as well

With regards to date wise I am thinking during the summer months
i.e. before March 2010 or between November 2010 and March 2011
Does anyone else have dates in mind
I am think of warmer months as we could sit outside somewhere

I'm one of those people Alan ....
Cornwall Park was where I was born .... there was a hospital many moons ago, to do with the army (I think)

Ok, Anyone in NZ or overseas will be welcomed.
So are we thinking of Cornwall Park as a venue?
Maybe we need to work out some dates when people would like to meet up

Cornwall Hospital was an American army hospital
"US Army 39th General Hospital. This dealt with casualties from the Pacific campaign. The hospital huts covered some 75 acres and were linked by long enclosed corridors. The Park was closed to the public during the period of most intense military use.
The US Army began moving out in 1944 and the buildings became a New Zealand government hospital facility with a lease imposed on the Park by legislation."
Cornwall Hospital 1942 - 1975. The hospital was originally to last for 6 years but did not finally depart the site until 1975 when the land reverted to pastoral use. In its time the Cornwall Hospital was the site of National Womens Hospital and of the Cornwall Geriatric Hospital"
There is a lovely picnic area with BBQ's there now,only the old flagpole remains

I have just been looking at next years calender and Easter is at beginning of April so that may be out as well cause accommodation will also be booked out.

We had a small gathering recently, in the Auckland Domain grandstand. If it's fine you have the whole of the Domain. If wet, there is shelter in the Grandstand, and toilets to boot.

Another place would be Dove Myer Robinson Park,Also known as
Parnell Rose Garden, Nancy Stein Memorial Gardens, Pohutukawa area, Judges Bay, St Stephens Cemetery and Fred Ambler Lookout.
There is the historic chapel of St Stephens and the adjoining cemetery is well worth a wander.
I was just thinking the domain often has concerts in the rotunda so we would have to check that out

There is also that garden place in Mt Eden. Can't think of the name but it also has a tea room as well

Perhaps we should decide what sort of format we want the meeting to take. If it's just a social gathering, a time to compare notes and research tips or a combination of all the above plus any others that may come up.
It would be best away from public holidays from accomodation points of view although I am happy to host a couple and maybe others around Auckland could as well.
If we are happy to head up my way (Warkworth) I could arrange an indoor and an outdoor venue at little or no cost.
Perhaps if those interested could let someone know their preferences then it could be co-ordinated, I am happy to take the short staw if that is acceptable

Rugrat and I will be visiting the big smoke early Jan or Feb to visit the attractions :) Zoo, Rainbows end etc. If our visit coincides with a meet would love to pop in.

Set the date - I will be there if it suits but I would like to think there is some sort of programme in place.
Researching - thats not silly either - I think the Centre is open on Saturdays and some Sundays.
As for transport - how about going down that road [haha 'scuse the pun] when we know what is required. i.e. if anyone needs a ride they can ask and those who can help can respond.
I dont live in Auckland but would be happy to transport anyone in my region.

Hi Newbe, weather is fine, low to mid 20's rather cool for this time of year in WA, have not had a 40 deg day yet.....most unusual. Still warm enough for the reptiles to visit my back door :o Dogs not happy.
Otherwise life is pretty damn good, hope this is so for all of you.

Thanks to those of you that have PMd' me about the meet, it's interesting to note that only Janette actually lives in Auckland so it should be and interesting time.
I am away from home for today and most of tommorrow but will get back to you all before the weekend. There doesn't at this stage appear to be a preference for dates.
If any other readers are interested in this gathering then post here and I will pm you.

As mentioned, we're not to be considered when determining dates, as we will be visiting the attractions but thought that if a meet and our visit happened to coincide then I'd pop in and say hi and meet a few. :)

Just bringing this to the top again, I recall someone suggested we try the NZSG for a meeting venue, howwever I suspect we may need someone who is a member to make the approaches and wonder if any of those interested are and could make an approach to them.
I suspect that with the normal attrition rates we may well just wind up with about half a dozen at the most and whether they are likely to put themselves out for so few is debatable..
Your thoughts would be appreciatted.

The library has lock ins - maybe one a year. starting about 8pm and staying overnight til the next morning. I heard it was good fun.

It was sad to read in the latest NZSG magazine of the death at age 52 of the Library Family History coordinator, who had arraged these lock ups events - so this might not be a starter until a replacement is appointed.

Looks like folks I may not make it up to Auckland until September or October 2010 as my mother is on the waiting list to have an operation and will need help to do things for at least 3 months afterwards.

Right, just to confirm I have contacted Archives and we can use the research room which is just of the main reading room, this I will confirm with them before the close of work for them on Friday (tommorrow) so please confirm with me that you will be attending. Whilst this will mainly be a research get-together there should be ample time and opportunity to do a bit of quiet networking. For those who have not been before it has good facilities and good staff.
Finally to those that are unable to make it we will most likely be able to do some 'lookups' for you and they will be dealt with on a firsst come first served basis. Remember this is for AUCKLAND archives only so check your referrneces before hand that the files you want are in the Auckland office.

I was down at 9.30 when I went and it wasn't too bad from Auckland out to the airport. I had most of the traffic on the run in from the North.

Alan I am coming from Bombay end. Just going from experience with the motorway it can get a snails pace round about Manukau and even though from experience we allow ourselves plenty of leeway for time, there is always roadworks or tractors on the road.

At least the weather has cooled down a bit but still no sign of rain, I keep having to absail down the cracks in the lawn to retreive my granddaughters.
