Title: Goodwin, Shobdon & Rosser, Penallt : marriage
Post by: rydwin on Tuesday 24 November 09 22:41 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I am trying to track down the marriage of Elizabeth Goodwin (born 1829 Shobdon,Herefordshire) to Henry Chadwell Rosser (born 1809, Penallt, Monmouthshire). Presumed date around 1849? with their first child born 1850 at Weobley. [Later moved to Kent 1854, then Chepstow 1859 and Gloucester Brimscombe 1861.]

I initially worked on assumption that marriage would be in bride's parish but enquiry (telephone & letter) at the Hereford record office were negative. I've since contacted the records offices (BMD) in surrounding areas ranging from Brecon to Gloucester to no avail. I also cannot find this couple on the 1851 census! Wales nor England.

Does anyone have access to Shobdon or Weobley local marriage records? or suggest where else I can look??  any help would be gratefully received
Many Thanks

Hi

Did you get Elizabeth's maiden name from one of the children's birth certs?

Hi,
Yes,  from her second son Edgar born in Brimscombe 1860.

Also the Goodwin name was carried on as a middle name with her third son Henry ( informant on her death certificate ) and again with one of Edgar's sons.

I wonder whether Henry and Elizabeth ever married - first wife Mary Ann was still alive in 1861 but had re-married.  Divorce in those days was usually for the wealthy but unless she was a bigamist ..............

Here is the 1861 census for Gloucester

James Underwood 35 carpenter & shopkeeper b Gloucs Brownsbarrow??
Mary A 45 wife b Ross
Susannah Rosser 16 step daughter b Ledbury
Louisa Rosser 12        ditto

Mary A was still alive and living with James in 1871

Also from the IGI - in all cases parents were Henry and Mary Ann and venue is just shown as Leominster

These are christening dates - not birthdates

MARY SOPHIA ROSSER  Christening:  25 DEC 1842
ALBERT VALENTINE ROSSER   Christening:  11 MAR 1840
ANN ROSSER   Christening:  11 MAR 1840

And an earlier Susannah who presumably died and was succeeded by the one b 1844/45

Susannah Rosser   Christening:  30 JUN 1833   Stroud, Gloucester
Father:  Henry Rosser    Mother:  Mary Ann

Thanks.....thats a lot to digest. I'm really grateful to you and impressed.

I've checked a transcript of the 1832 Hope Mansell marriage entry but unfortunately no detail on grooms father which still leaves some room for doubt . However he is shown as living at St Briavels which is quite close ( across the Wye) to his birthplace.

Now can't find them in 1841 census Ledbury, but will keep looking.

Does raise a query though, .......in 1861 Henry is living in Berkeley with Elizabeth (nearly 20 years his junior) and they have a son Edwin aged 11 (born about 1850)  ...maybe thats the reason for the family split!  Thanks very much, I will look into these developments  :)

Fathers names did not appear on marriage entries until 1.7.1837 when Civil Reg was introduced

Re: 1841 census - have a look at this entry for Hereford - Hope Mansell

Found Henry in 1841 - indexed as Roper and living in Leominster.  I noticed that most of the Rosser entries looked like Ropper

Thanks Susan :) .

CaroleW - getting more and more complex! If this is the same Henry he's a very busy boy!  Re 1841 Roper : speculation here: Thomas would be a traditional family name ,his brother Thomas seems to have died in Jamaica in 1832 and his great grandfather and his father before him were Thomas, but then its a common name anyway, Albert and Ann look like twins , unclear why they would have been separated at 1841, although baynham family may be  connected between locations.  Thomas and Albert may have died before 1851 . there are other name resonances in the children. .....there's a lot to assess here! Thanks again.

If this is the same Henry

Henry's occupation is the key here

1841 not born in county and an engineer
1851 gas engineer
1861 gas engineer
1871 - gas fitter

Yes, died in 1873 as a fitter, but no family informant (Glamorganshire coroners inquest). Do you know if records of such coroners inquests are kept from that period?

RE ' the same Henry'  Agree looks possible, even probable, but I will try to rule out any other Henry Rossers born in Monmouth around that time.  :)

I know it is a long time since you posted this but I note you are still active. I am related to Henry Rosser through his son Edgar. I also have very interesting newspaper reports of a court case which explains alot about Mary Ann and Elizabeth Goodwin

Hi, Edgar Chadwell Rosser was my great grandfather .

My grandfather was called Edgar Chadwell Rosser. My great-grandfather was Edgar Rosser son of Henry Rosser. He was married to Julia. Is this the same family?

Yes, sounds like it. My grandfather was Arthur Goodwin Rosser, one of the four brothers. Did Edgar marry Dorothy? I think I have a picture of the wedding. My email is <garry.rosser@yahoo.com>.
