I found this lovely pic in a shop last week... the shop assistant telephoned me as she knows from past encounters that I have to take these lost souls home with me, ;)
It is on matte card which is 13x11 inches approximately...It looks like a photograph that has been "doctored " IE enhanced with what looks like a darkened watercolour ... eg her eyelashes and hair especially the sleeves and parts of the lace on the neckline and the jewelery .. On the back is written her name , maiden name and the name of her two children !!
It says ...Louisa Mary Young nee Suffield -mother of Kitty and Marjorie .
Below the pic and not scanned ( pic was too big to get it all on scanner ) is what appears to be thename of the photographer A THAWLEY ... and on the right BOAR LANE LEEDS .
Any information about the this lady would be a real bonus , a date etc for the pic, Photographer and of course I am offering her as a practise piece for your restorative powers and for colouring if you wish . She was found in a shop in Worcestershire near Kidderminster. What are the chances of finding some next of kin do you think ???
Poll...... with deerstalker and magnifying glass ! ;D

Louisa Mary SUFFIELD marr Alfred Robson YOUNG Dec Quarter 1901 Leeds Yorkshire
Karenlee
Right... so this photo must be after 1901 1911 if its that Mrs Young... Hopefully Prue or Jim or China or any other dating expert will confirm that before we go off on a wild wotsit ... I only guess at dates with a general look but they seem to know styles from year to year in some cases !! :o ;D
-
My big bad... marriage was 1911 not 1901... sorry.... :'( :'(
She was born 1876 Bradford. I have both her and Alfred on 1891, 1901 and 1911 Census.
No real leads on marriages for either of their daughters though, doesn't seem that there were anymore children either.
Cheers

I'm a bit slow on the look up side of things ..

Thanks for looking Karen.. It's 3 am and I'm struggling to staY awake so I'll start looking again tomorrow ... BTW Where did you find them in 1911 .. anywhere in Worcestershire ?
Maybe Louisa's siblings had children Hmm will start looking tomorrow ...thanks again Karen ... :-*
-
I found them still in Lanc in 1911 Poll. he was 27 and she was 35. His occupation given as Clothiers Shop Manager. His brother George Bell YOUNG was living with them, aged 29, Boot and Shoe Salesman. They both came from reasonably sized families -- Alfred from Darlington Durham and Louisa from Yorkshire. Will see if I can find anything useful... at last, something to allieviate the boredom caused by multiple broken bones....

Karenlee
:o :o What have you done ??
sorry maybe just found a link to this area
Frederick W suffield born Kidderminster 1848 ...3 miles from where I found it ...

Broken right leg and ankle and fractured left foot..... the joys of housework ( fell down the stairs carrying a basket of dirty laundry )..... :o :o
Looks like Louisa Mary had at least 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Have found definite marriages for 3 of them... maybe 4. Will see what I can find further forward for these people.

Louisa Mary's brother Harry Fulcher SUFFIELD was a soldier. He left his wife Caroline and son Frederick with his parents for the 1901 Census. His WW1 Pension file makes interesting reading. He spent time in both India and Africa. It shows his marriage details and birth places and years for his three children.

Hi Poll!
Overpainting was a popular practice between about 1890 and 1920 according to Prue, generally done to add definition to an enlargement before the enlarging equipment became more advanced.
This one I would guess just pre-war or so, because of the neckline and the hairstyle...not typical of the early war styles but after the high necklines of the first decade had become unfashionable. Just an estimate though...Could be a wedding portrait.
Karen, hope you are healing quickly. Meanwhile you must get a lot of rest and keep those feet elevated. A golden opportunity to be waited on hand and foot, literally ;D
I rest my case against housework in general, and laundry in particular. Bad for your health ;D ;D ;D
Cheers,
China

Hi Mrs. Rummage 2 :P...Looking on G.R......There are three matches for Kathleen Young Born 1911/12 in Lancashire...and only one Louisa Suffield......she was born in Poplar, Middlesex in 1895...a bit young ( Pardon the pun ;D ) though as she would have only been married at 16 years...not impossible though ;D
Beautiful photo :o

:o Oh my you have all been busy ,.. Goodness Karen! so much info ...thanks for the pms too ... I am dashing in as my visitors are due in 20 minutes .... for 4 days ! eek... I'll stay logged on ... :-X
Poll ... :)

Well I just have to see how this one turns out, my family name is Young but sadly no relation :'(
Good luck on the search, and get well soon Karen.
Regards B (Young)
-
There seems to be a lot of silvering out on this which makes her eyes stand out so I've just made her look a bit more normal should you find an owner.

Okay, haven't tried a restore & colour for a while, AND using new software, so let's see whether this comes out okay ... fingers crossed, because it wouldn't export to one of my other online forums ::)

Hi
Sorry I cannot help with the Dates Of this Beautiful Lady
But i have done a Restore of Her
Regards
Iria
-
Karen - That's awful, hope you are not in too much pain.
I'd keep the laundry basket downstairs if I were you and get your family to bring down their own washing and put it in the basket. That's what I always did and it worked. If it wasn't in the basket it didn't get washed and if it was something they wanted to wear to go out, tough ;D They soon learned.
Lizzie

Thanks for all the kind messages about my legs... I am not in that much pain, although there have been times when I have had to resort to pain killers. I am on a strict 2 hours down and 2 hours up routine for leg positions..... but I must admit that I got so caught up in this chase yesterday that I did exceed the legs down time limit by a tiny wee bit ( about 2 hours worth of tiny bit :o :o ).
I am very lucky to have my eldest home as her school year has finished. So she has been doing washing, ironing and cleaning for me. Mr Karenlee is a gem without equal ( sometimes ;D ;D ) and is doing so many extra things over and above his own huge workload. The youngest one and the 2 dogs... well, lets just say that they are here too.... :-X :-X
Now back to the chase.....
Karenlee
-
Sorry ... so late in replying folks but still have my visitors here till Sunday and it's manic here at the moment ! .....Where to start .. 1st Karen .. you POOR thing !! Both legs compromised !! Naughty you staying longer in the down position :o Please don't overdo things ... ... there is no rush ...after all the years it has seen pass .....(about 100!) the photo can wait a bit longer to know it's fate . ;)
Iria ... :) Lovely work.. thank you so much ... How that pink suits her and the oval mount works well .. kind of you to take time on my behalf and it is appreciated .
Wouldnt it be great to find someone related? ... Obviously we cannot name any living rellies on here if we do find any descendants SO please folks, use the PM system if information found relates to any living persons just to be safe ;)
Sound advice to Karen Lizzie... I expect she's not likely to try that again mind you ..... ;)
Debs .. hi ;).. nice to see you on here again .. that is terrific,Thank you .. absence hasn't dulled your skills for sure ... and the colour combinations work really well . What is the new software then ?... I appreciate you trying it out on this photo ... I hope you visit us more often with work like that ... ;)
Thanks to you too Jim and for giving me a restore that has retrieved the original eyes before they had been manually enhanced ... As China said it was usually done to sharpen up enlargements and this is a large picture. Thanks again for spending time on a pic for me .. it looks really authentic...I do hope we find someone to give the original to as well as all the restores and coloured versions.
Aw David ... Sorry that you dont fit on the same tree ;) .. That would have been a real result eh ? ;D
Carol... we know how to rummage dont we ? ;D Ive got the same as Karen for Louisa's birth.... 1876 in Bradford Yorks so your input has set me off looking again ... :-\ ;D
Wendy ... thanks .. I wonder if he had a studio on Boar Lane ..I'll maybe try Kelly's directories ..
China ...Overpainting seems to have been common as you say but I didn't know it was particularly prevalent for those dates but it makes sense when relating to enlargements in the early days of photography.. That's interesting that you think it could be a wedding pic ... ie 1911.
Xinia ... It's a bit compelling ..the thought that I may found someone to return the photo to ...stay tuned ... ;D
Right...phew
Lastly Karen .. So much info from you :-* I'm now going to try and get it in order and get the details down in order to see the bigger picture ... thankyou so much for foraging for these details ... especially what may be vital in this chase ... the siblings of Louisa if it proves to be the case that there were no grandchildren of her own .
Meanwhile here, the rest of the household has gone to bed now exhausted after 4 hours at the Victorian Street market in Worcester tonight ... so I'm now off to look up some records .. :-X shhhh ;D
A very grateful Polly :).
ps I do hope I haven't missed anyone out in my thankyou list .....
-
Hi Polly, I'm blushing now LOL
Have had to bite the bullet and use Gimp, as I can't afford the new Photoshop programs :'( ... 'tis a rather steep learning curve!
Cheers
Deb
-
Well I'm glad to see so many people having a go at restoring photos .. It is a forum where so many levels of skills exist and for the most part people love to share the knowledge with each other ...
The exciting thing is that even after many years of using a programme,( say Photoshop)for a particular process, there is nearly always an alternative route available to get to the same destination ... and sometimes the scenic route is not the obvious one but sometimes more rewarding ... Hope you finding the online tutorials for GIMP helpful ...
Meanwhile ... I'm off on the trail again .... ;D

Hi Poll...........I will be the first to take you up on your offer to colour your
wonderful photo, it was a nice find for you.
I have done this photo on my new computer (early chrissy present) and I am unsure if the colours are the same as my old computer.
Carolyn :)
-
Hi Carolyn .. As usual... beautiful colours ... you must have done thousands over the years on here .. the standard never drops either ... thanks ... ;) you know how I appreciate your work ... :-*

You are welcome Poll I am pleased you like it.

Hello
I have just come across your discussion because I am currently looking into my family ancestry. I am Louisa Mary Suffield's grand-daughter, Marjorie's daughter. I have 3 children so Louisa has several descendants and I have other photos of her and my grandfather Alfred Robson Young and, of course, Marjorie, my mum, who died in 2004, and my Aunt Kitty, who died in 2002, both aged 91.
I noticed that your site advises living people not to divulge their names openly so could you please advise me what to do next if you want to know more.

Hi Poll
I've received your email and I'm so thrilled that I can have the photo. What I'm going to do when I have a bit more time is collate all the info I have on Louisa Mary (including any extra you may have found) and then post it on here for everyone who is interested maybe with some more photos. Watch this space!
I still feel very humble and quite amazed that a photo of a member of my past family has stirred such interest.I also think it is an incredible coincidence that you found the photo at the same time as I was researching into my ancestry.
Thank you for your phone number, poll. I will email you again with mine.

Poll
I don't exactly believe in fate as such but over the last few years I have come to believe in something that I can't give a name to........if you need (not want, but really deep down need) something somehow, if it is the right thing for you it will happen maybe not in the way you were expecting but somehow. I am not religious but I do believe there has to be balance in the Universe.......Poll needed to find the answer to her questions and I needed to know more about, and have more photos of, my ancestors. Both of these needs happened at the same time. Maybe it is mysterious..........I don't know the hows or the whys but it has happened to me several times before and now I don't Q & A with it, just accept it.
Anyway, I would love to have all the photos and will stay on the site I'm sure. Thanks to everyone who has made me feel so welcome.

Aw WENDY ! So sorry in the excitement I overlooked thanking you for the details about the Photographer :o :-[... I wonder if this was earlier or after the other address, Boar Lane, on the actual photo. . China usually is good at finding out details on Photographers.... yoohoo China ... ... ;) ;D
I'll see what it says in any of the historical directories ... and Thank you Wendy ... ;)
Thanks Judy. Sue ( Kez) Orinoco , Xinia Debs and Margaret too for your comments.. I'm just so pleased with the outcome ...

Lost for words here..... what a great result ...being able to give Louisa Mary back to her family where she belongs.
Welcome Sue, I am so pleased that you found us here, and remember that we'll always be willing to lend a hand with your searches. Would also love to know more about Louisa, so feel free to post what you have.
Sorry that I haven't been around for the past few days. I tried to spend as much time as possible over the weekend with my family. I get a bit lost sometimes being here alone most days and I can't get out much of course .... YET.... although my eldest has just finished school for the year, but she is busy preparing to go get her Learner Drivers License. Be grateful that most of you live in another hemisphere.... ;D ;D ;D
Thanks Poll for putting this thread up and giving me such a wonderful task to occupy myself..... when's the next one coming along.... :D

How amazing that the "planets aligned" :D and brought Poll and Sue together like this. You were meant to find that pic Poll..no doubt about it. I should send you up to the antique shops of Shropshire, see what you can dig up for me, as you certainly have the golden touch! :)
What a wonderful outcome to this thread and I just know how happy this would have made Poll, a lady that not only takes stray photos home, but er, stray people from the other side of the World, eh Poll! ;) :-* :-*

I don't consider you a stray Caz!! :-X ;) .. ...
( For those that don't know .... after chatting on here together for years, Caz came to the UK a couple of years ago and I asked her to stay with me using my home as a base for her genealogical searches . She is exactly what it says on the tin... kind, funny, talented and honest .. in fact no different to what she is like on here .... )
In fact all the people that I have actually met in the flesh so to speak, from Rootschat ...have been just as they appear on here ... which is lovely ..
and reassuring .
Of course ...all this was made possible by one little scribble on the back of this photo giving me a name ....... food for thought regarding our own pics eh ? ;)

I have such fond memories of Poll and I huddled around her computer to the wee hours of the morning, drinking copious amounts of tea, laughing so much our sides hurt while the rest of the household slept oblivious to our shenanigans! ;D ;D

Hi Tephra .. I suppose deep down I posted this pic more in hope than expectation really ... But something felt right about doing it ... ;)
Lydart!! :o :o I'm still coming to terms with you being SPEECHLESS !!
;D ;D ;D ;D
Truth be told there were about 12 photos(Unrelated) and I couldn't buy them all ... well at least not without having to answer some very odd questions from OH relating to the state of my sanity ( er ...exCuse Me !! ???) So I chose 4 of them ... ie the ones that spoke to me :-X .... and was gobsmacked when I got home and retrieved them from the old M & S carrier bag and found the full married name, maiden name and name of 2 daughters on the reverse of one of them ... ... Nevertheless, I imagined it could take months to track down anyone ....if there was anyone ... and when Karen said she hadn't found a marriage for either of the daughters my hopes sank a bit... The Grandaughter Sue is a bit overwhelmed I think at the moment
( understandably) but is putting together some information for us all together with some more photos to post sometime as soon as she can so we will resurrect the thread when that happens. She must feel a bit like a celebrity... turning up unannounced and finding everyone Knows her !! She seems a lovely person anyway and has only recently really started on the family tree trail so I'm sure she'll find lots of help from rootschatters .

Jim ! ;D ;D ;D
She's not kidding either !! :-X ;D ;D but ..She is spoken for ... and the queue starts with Ronaldo!( late of Man U ... now Real Madrid )
Anyway I digress . :-X... I will be arranging to get Louisa Mary Young nee Suffield home to her grand daughter and great grand daughter in the next week or so....and will keep you posted ...
meanwhile ...
One of the other pics I bought is a wedding photo with a date ...and the christian names ( only) of the bride and groom and the name and place of the photographer and studio .... so ... should I start another case for all the rootschatter detectives ...plus of couse a pic for restoring / colouring ....?

She seems a lovely person anyway and has only recently really started on the family tree trail so I'm sure she'll find lots of help from rootschatters .
stunningly attractive and with a body to rival Elle MacPherson
kind, funny, talented and honest
Is she married Poll only I think I'm in love.
jim
Jim !
Poll
Yes I am still rather overwhelmed but have used to the idea now and have, this evening, been putting together my piece about Louisa Mary. It is written in rough and hopefully tomorrow evening I will dig out the photos and get the thing posted. I did say hopefully! I'll do my best. Thanks again for all your interest and support.

Louisa Mary Young ( nee Suffield)
Louisa Mary was my grandmother on my mother’s side. As well as some photos of her, her parents and my grandfather, Alfred Robson Young, I have her birth, marriage and death certificates. After my mum (Marjorie Young) died in 2004 I found a box full of old photos and an envelope with several old certificates in it at mum’s house. Unfortunately I never got the chance to look at or discuss the photos and documents with mum when she was alive. I have looked at them many times since 2004 and wished mum was here to tell me all about them.
Last month it was my eldest son’s 30th birthday. He was devoted to his grandma and I thought it would be a nice idea to produce an album of scanned photos of some of his ancestors. This original idea snowballed, I became really interested, and I produced a book for him with his family tree with names, dates and photos of his ancestors. The final touch was a composite picture of him with all his ancestors in the background. As he and I were the only ones still living I left us in colour and changed all the others to greyscale and then faded them out to suit their generation. I am very pleased with this picture which I produced using Adobe Photoshop. I presented it him at his birthday bash 2 weeks ago and he was thrilled.
It is still a work in progress and that is why I was Googling my ancestors names and how I came across this site. Some of the photos have names, initials and/or dates on the back so, armed with my magnifying glass and the ability to enlarge the very tiny photos on the computer, I have pieced together many parts of the jigsaw…….unfortunately there are still some missing. I have photos but no names and vice versa so I am still doing my detective work and if anyone has any information I would love to receive it.
I never knew my grandmother as she died in 1934 and know very little about her apart from anecdotes passed on by my mother. My grandfather died when I was 14 so I have many happy memories of him.
Louisa was born on March 2nd 1876 at David Street in Horton in the county of York. Her father was Frederick Walter Suffield who was a toy and fancy goods dealer at that time. Her mother was Charlotte Brown Napp. Her father was born in Kidderminster in 1848 and was still alive in 1923. Louisa had at least three brothers, Henry Fulchem, Wilfred George and Frederick Charles, and two sisters, Lottie Haigh and Dorothy Madge.
Louise married Alfred Robson Young on November 22nd 1090 at St Matthews Church in Leeds. Alfred is recorded as living in Ruskin Avenue in Manchester and Louisa’s address is given as Carr Place, Leeds. Alfred’s father was Thomas Henry Young who is recorded as being an upholsterer. Louisa’s father, Frederick Walter’s profession is shown as Traveller. One of the witnesses of the marriage is Dorothy Madge Suffield, one of Louisa’s sisters, another is George Bell Young, Alfred’s brother.
Alfred was born in Beaumont Street in Darlington on 25th April 1883 and had a variety of jobs. In 1909 he was a Clothier’s Manager, in 1934 he was a Retail Clothes Inspector and by 1946 he was a Local Government Official. His mother was Annie Bell. Alfred died at the age of 81 on 13th March 1965 at Whitkirk when he was described as a Retired Gas Board Clerk. On the wall in my hallway I have the barometer with which he was presented on his retirement by Leeds Gas Meter Inspection Department in April 1949 and it still works!
Louisa and Alfred had two daughters, both registered as born in Chorlton, Didsbury. Kathleen Mary (always known as Kitty) was born on May 29th 1911 and Marjorie, born on October 14th 1912. When the girls were little the family lived in Market Place, Norwich. In 1926 the family lived in Barwick-in-Elmet near Leeds at Bank House and moved to Whitkirk, Leeds in about 1934. That was the house where I was born and lived until I was two and where my grandfather and Aunt Kitty lived until their deaths.
Not long after Louisa and Alfred moved to Whitkirk Louisa tragically died there on 7th April 1936, aged 58, of hypostatic pneumonia and carcinoma of the left lung. Marjorie was 22 and Kitty 23 years old.
Marjorie married my father on 28th June 1946 at Whitkirk and I was born in 1951. Kitty never married and died in August 2002 and Mum died in July 2004, both aged 91. I married in 1973 and have two sons and a daughter so Louisa’s bloodline continues.
I have included another photo of Louisa Mary and one of Alfred Robson.
Thanks again to everyone especially Polly. I look forward to seeing the photo that started it all!

This is all so heartwarming... shows what this site is all about... how really great to hear more about a person that was lost and alone in a junk shop.... ;) :D

Couldn't have had a better outcome - I'm rapt! :)

Oh Goodness me :-[ ... I'm reduced to tears reading all this .. :'( Thank you so much Sue for filling in the details ... I suspect the photo that I found was probably a gift maybe to Louisa's father who was born in Kidderminster just 3 miles from where I found the photo...
Coincidently ... . I also have very close family links myself with Darlington where Alfred, Louisa's husband was born and go at least three times a year to visit the resting place of my other half's mother father and brother . What a strange catalogue of coincidences eh ? All this has happened in the space of 7 days .
Thank you everyone who has travelled with me and Sue on this journey .... for the work and effort and enthusiasm you have all had in indulging me. It really is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had and I shall ensure that Louisa is delivered as soon as possible into the welcoming warmth of her family .. It's been an honour ...
Thank you all so so much ....

What a fitting conclusion to Polls purchase ! A wonderful story, and thank you Sue for filling in the details.
LOVE that enormous hat ...

What a fantastic journey you have all been on. It's lovely to see a photo being returned to the family and to hear all about the person portayed.
Well done Poll.
Here's to the next one :-*

Thank You Polldoll for telling me about this thread What a wonderful find a bit like Robert Stead
You have all done well here :)
Welcome Sue to Rootschat you will find many helpful friends here ::)

Thanks ... sorry ...duplicated post somehow ! :-[ ;D so deleted one :-X

I thought you would enjoy it Elizabeth seeing as you were on the same journey when we were all hunting for Robert's Stead's grave in Liverpool last year on the Lancashire Board. It's at those times that ROOTSCHAT really shows it's power as a real community ... Don't ya just love it when it all just works like that ... :) ;)
I told the lady in the shop where I found the photos today and she was thrilled and informed me that the person who brought them in comes in regularly and says she will ask her to ring me so that I may be able to ascertain where they came from as there were a number of others in the batch ... one of which was the wedding pic on the sister thread to this... Could they all belong to the same group/ family ???
-
I think it's more likely than not Poll that, as I said earlier, they are a "job lot", particularly since now it appears one person brought them all in. That would be just amazing!!!!!

Aw WoW Poll.....Congratulations...what a fantastic story :o :o :o :o :o :o :o..I'm so glad that photo and rellies are now reunited...this is the stuff that dreams are made of....I have been doing just that with my "Junkshop Strays" for sometime and have never had a bite...yet....so happy for you both :D :D :D :D :D

Glad you're back Carol .... I knew you'd love this ...It has been the most amazing thing ... I spoke to Sue the other evening and was planning to talk again today but it became manic here for a number of reasons and I 'll do it tomorrow .... The people on here have been brilliant and we were all so so excited when we first saw Sue 's post ... I was practically hysterical .. wow ... Like you said ... we dream of doing things this.......t'was magical ;)

I've just read your comments, Poll, about the other photos in the same batch and wondered if you had any further info on that......maybe some of the others could also be to do with my family? Love to hear more.
How do I get onto the sister thread?
Thanks, Suelou

Ive left a message with the person in the shop who is going to let me know .
She "knows"the person who brought them in but in the sense that she comes in regularly and only knows her by her christian name ..She says she doesn't have a contact name / number so we 'll just have to wait ...meanwhile I have asked her to keep the photos till we know .. phew ... it's hard work this detective stuff innit ....Sue I presume you have seen the restores and restoration work that people on here have already done on this thread for you on that photo of Louisa .. I thought it just possible that the people on the wedding photo that Davidrigg3 has given you a link to could be related ...especially the young girl on the right ...the bridesmaid and the lady on far right...or is it wishful thinking on my part....???
-
I found this lovely pic in a shop last week... the shop assistant telephoned me as she knows from past encounters that I have to take these lost souls home with me, ;)
It is on matte card which is 13x11 inches approximately...It looks like a photograph that has been "doctored " IE enhanced with what looks like a darkened watercolour ... eg her eyelashes and hair especially the sleeves and parts of the lace on the neckline and the jewelery ..
Poll...... with deerstalker and magnifying glass ! ;D
What a lovely thought, Poll - taking these lonely people home. I'm just the same! Ain't us folk strange!
:)
Merry Christmas
Ron

Sorry Ron Somehow I seemed to have missed your post :-[.. Yes I'm so glad that I followed my instincts and took Louisa home with me ... In the New Year her grandaughter and I are meeting up so I can hand her back personally to her rightful family ...I just felt it was tempting fate to entrust her to uncertainties of the Royal Mail with the possible strikes and Christmas post on the horizon ....It has to be one of the most rewarding things that I have done and I 'll always remember Louisa . I like to think that the story will be passed down through her descendants for generations as a piece of folklore to go along withg the photo and maybe in another hundred years another gr grandaughter x4 will be telling the tale on a forum like this...ya never know .... ;) ;D

Hi, it's Sue, Louisa Mary Suffield's granddaughter.
I wanted everyone who has followed thread and helped to solve the mystery to know that Louisa came "home" to me in the post today. When I saw the writing on the back I had quite a jolt as it was definitely my mother's handwriting. How the photo came to be in a shop will always be a mystery but it's really wonderful to have it here.
It's my birthday next Saturday and we're having a family get-together so I will be showing her off to everyone......she couldn't have come home at a better time!
Thanks again to everyone who helped to solve the mystery, especially, of course, Polly.
The end of the saga at last!

Hi Soelou...........what a wonderful Birthday present, you couldn't wish for a better one.
I'm so pleased for you.
Barbara
P.S. Happy Birthday for next Saturday. ;D

And A Happy Birthday from me too
For next Saturday
Elizabeth :)

Glad she arrived ok Sue I was hoping to deliver her in person but it'll be a few months before I am in the area so I thought it was time to say my goodbyes to her... I didn't hear any more from the shop keeper about the lady who had brought the photo in along with the others so if I do hearany more about where it came from I'll let you know ...
I am just pleased that we had a happy ending .... and all in time for your Birthday eh .I hope you have a wonderful day on Saturday Sue ... ;)

Strange isn't it... how a chance visit to a shop at random can result in an event that has led to something I will never forget and that one day in the future someone related to Sue just may be reciting a tale to their child or grandchild of how a certain photograph of a Louisa Mary Suffield came to be in their possession... through a wonderful medium called the internet ...Glad you enjoyed the journey too Ron . ;)

Hello,
I just came across this old thread while doing some research. I can add a little info about the photographer Arthur Thawley.
Arthur Thawley was born in Thurgoland (nr Barnsley) in 1853 and was the son of a miner. His first job on the census was as colliery lamp cleaner. He married Martha barker in Leeds in 1877 and in 1881 was an engineman in a saw mill. By 1891 he's a photographer and by 1901 had his own studio on Boer Lane in Leeds. He died in 1930.
(Martha Barker was my great-great grandmothers sister)
Theres a couple of shots of his studio on the Leodis website.
