Title: Gleeson family, Birr
Post by: Celtic Owl on Friday 27 November 09 21:19 GMT (UK)
My maternal grandmother, Maria Kearns (nee Gleeson) was born in Birr on 1st of May 1902. I have a copy of her birth certificate showing this date.

Her father is shown as John Gleeson of Mill Street, Birr and his rank or profession as labourer. Her mother is Kate Gleeson, formerly Parnell. The birth was registered on 5th June 1902, Thomas Woods being the registrar.

Maria married my Grandad, John Patrick Kearns, in Birr on 22nd January 1923. I have about half of what is left of the original Certificate of Marriage, it's somewhat dog eared and faded. One of the winesses to the marriage is Pat Gleeson.

Sometime between 1923 and 1930 John and Maria left Ireland settling in Sheffield, England. I say 1930 as my Mother, Maureen, was born in Sheffield on 24th January 1930. As my Grandparents made a new life in Sheffield they gradually lost contact with the families in Birr.

Around 1982 I took my Grandmother back to Birr for a visit. We managed to find her younger brother Joe, they hadn't seen each other for over 50 years, it was a little emotional to say the least. Joe was around a year younger than Maria.

All, including my mother, are now deceased. I have recently had a look at the 1911 census on the National Archives site. It shows a Gleeson family living at 6 Glebe Street, Birr. It shows John as the head of the family, Kate his wife, they have 6 children including a son Patrick and a daughter Maria, the youngest child is Joseph. However my Grandmothers age doesn't quite 'fit'. If she was born on 1st May 1902 she would have been 8 on 2nd April 1911, the Form A shows the Maria at 6 Glebe Street as 6 years old. The information also shows her father John as being a Military Pensioner.

The other children in the Glebe Street family are Mary, Alice and Bridget.

Does anyone have any information relating to this Gleeson family ?

enfield, seanmac, I appreciate the time you've taken to assist in my research, thank you.

There's a lot to read through in the Birr Family Roots information you've supplied and I'll visit the web site to see if there's any more pieces of the jigsaw I can find. The only details I have of the Parnell connection is that shown on Marias birth crtificate.

As to the Patrick who was killed in action I have nothing else at this time that could connect him to 'my' Gleeson family.

Hello

I came across this thread looking for a Gleeson family that resided at 9 Pound Street, Birr, likely around 1937-1947.

There were five children including: Christina (eldest, born 12/12/1937), Brandon and Johnie (youngest, possibly born 1947).

We think that the mother may have died when Johnie was born and the children were placed in care.

Any help very much appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat,
Are you looking for the children or their parents etc.
A Marcella Gleeson aged 43, Pound St died from heart problems in 1936, she had a son John but he was informant so probably too old for your family.

I'll look some more.

Think this lady died from haemorrhage after childbirth in 1931
Margaret aged 29
 https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1931/04898/4327429.pdf
Address is only Birr

Oh I should have said RootsChat doesn't allow the names of living or possible living people so if the children are still living you need to remove their names.

Thanks! Looking for any info on parents names and general info on the family.

The eldest child (Christine Theresa Gleeson) was born 12th December 1937, we know that she was the eldest and that she was ten when Johnie was born, and their Mum passed.

Any help very much appreciated!

You can look on FamilySearch for Christina birth hopefully in will give the mother's maiden name, I can't do it on iPad
I'll just find the link

The page won't load for me so fingers crossed
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list/?page=1&countryId=1927084

You need the civil registration 1864 to 1958
The district is Birr if she was born Dec she may not be registered until the following year so search 1938 as well

You can find their marriage cert on Irish Genealogy

So where would a woman from Birr have her baby, if not at home?

Thank you. We think we’ve found the parents - Mary Callaghan and Patrick Gleeson, married 1937.

We also think Christine was actually born Theresa according to Family Search (we believed that was her middle name, but perhaps not!).

The address on the Gleeson Dunne marriage for Patrick is Glebe St. Birr, Patrick is I think 25 years.

This gives a birth of about 1897 so I think this is the family in 1911
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/King_s_Co_/Birr_Urban/Glebe_Street/551426/

There is a Joseph Gleeson born to John and Kate Parnell in 1903 (Birr)
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1904/01837/1717344.pdf Which doesn't quite match age wise with the census but not bad.
There is a Patrick Gleeson born to John and Kate Parnell in 1898 (Parnsonstown)
