Looking for a Washington birth 1908 for Ernest G Cranke. Can't find any WW2 Draft or information after 1930.
He appears on the 1910 and 1920 census for Spokane Ward 1 and in 1930 under Ernest Crance for San Francisco.
Thank You.

On the 1910 Census Birdie Cranke's sister is living with the Cranke family which indicates Birdie's maiden name may be WILSON.
And on the 1930 Census Ernest Cranke's occupation is listed as "boxer". The SS Death record below lists this man's mothers maiden name as WILSON and his father's surname as CRANKE.
Is it possible that Ernest changed his name when he was fighting?
Name: Edward Ogaffney
Birth Date: 6 May 1908
Birthplace: Washington
Death Date: 11 Jan 1948
Death Place: San Francisco
Mother's Maiden Name: Wilson
Father's Surname: Cranke

Hi Merjones.
Thats right his mothers maiden name was Wilson, His Mother and Father divorced and Father died in Idaho 1927.
That death record would be to much of a coincidence not to be him - wonder if his mother remarried again after 1930.
It isn't exactly a fighting name is it ?
Strange.
Many Thanks.

The father of Ernest - Henry Croasdle Cranke immigrated in 1903 according to the 1910 census. I would like to find the immigration record for him. The correct date of birth is 1880 and he was from England not Scotland. The WW1 Draft etc ties in with this.
Many Thanks

Virginia Koumarian Ogaffney, born 26 November 1907 in California, died 8 May, 1981 in San Francisco.
It appears that she had at least two children. Sending their names by pm, due to privacy issues.

This is the closest I could come to finding Henry Cranke
May 31, 1904 ship: Germanic sailing from Southampton to New York
Henry Cronk, mechanic, age 24 born abt. 1880 last residence: Chelmsford traveling to Philadelphia Pennsylvania
In the US previously for 6 months in 1902 Alb?? Michigan?

Sent an obit link, in case he was your Ernest's son. (Unfortunately, it did not list the parents.)
-
Thank you both.
Everything seems to fit with what I have learnt tonight. I will take a look at the 1904 passenger list. Believe - he had relatives in Chelmsford or that area so it could well be the correct one.
The obit tallies with suggested marriages etc.,
Very Much Appreciated.
Thank You.

Sandra: there also was an obit for the possible daughter (name sent previously by pm).

Looking through the list again - must have missed it. Should be 2008 San Francisco.

Sending the daughter's obit.

Lisa your a star (again). ;D ;D
Many Thanks. All this is on the very fringes of my own research but you will make people in Australia and Canada very happy ;D
Thank you so much.

If Ogaffney is actually your Ernest Cranke, then merjones is the true star, as she is the one who solved the puzzle. :D I just joined your party. (Hope merjones doesn't mind that I joined.) ;)
PS We don't have proof yet that the names I sent are actually Ernest/Edward's children.
-
Lisa I totally agree.
Sometimes you keep looking at the same records trying to make sense of them. This one did have the most unusual twist and it was'nt until Merjones pointed me back to that record involving a change of name that things dropped into place. If Ernest was involved in boxing then you could understand why the name was changed - so does the name Ogaffney have any meaning in the boxing world ?
It would be interesting if I could find anything on the boxing theme. It really is fascinating trying to fit the pieces of the jigsaw together.
Sorry merjones I was carried away with the momentum tonight and as Lisa has pointed out you were a "true star" ;D ;D ;D
Very many thanks for all your time and efforts. ;D
Best Wishes.

The immigration record for Henry/Harrry C Cranke is eluding me - apart from the 1904 suggestion from Merjones which I am still open minded about. ;D
Some information from Australia this morning suggested:-
2 nd April 1903. On board the Tunisia. Left from the port of Liverpool to Halifax Nova Scotia. Canada. He was single at the time. Ticket 3662.
Through Winnipeg
Alas I cannot find that record - can anyone else see it please ???
Thank You.

I tried a search, using just the year and ship name and there aren't any results. Could the spelling be a bit off?
I have one ancestor who is shown on the 1901? Canadian census as arriving in Canada in 1867. However, four of his children had already been born in Ontario by that time, and he is found on other records as living in Ontario prior to 1867. Can't believe everything you read. ;)
-
It looks like maybe the spelling is the problem. Its been Crance - Cronk - Crank -
It appears he was divorced by the 1920 census and I've only just found a possiblility for him this morning in Nexpearce. Lewis. Idaho (where the death record was issued in 1927) as a roomer. It still gives 1883 Scotland - immigration year 1889. That would'nt be right.
Spelling was Crauke.

Edward O'Gaffney was my Grandfather. Ernest his son was my father passed away in 2009. Edward died when my Father was young so i never met him. his wife Virginia was my Grandmother who passed when i was young. his daughter Patricia Dawn O'Gaffney was my Aunt and was a great woman that passed away in 2008. we know very little about Edward. if you have info about the Cranke family that would be great
