Hi
Can anyone give me any clues as to how I would find out if there was 2 Thomas Scott Mullay's residing in the Southland area in 1904? or even in 1902? Thank you in advance.

Hi ;D
May have been a father and son - though I can't see a son of the same name, only a similar name....same initials:
Papers Past has a notice of the marriage of Thomas MULLAY in 1882 - the bride was Robina A TULLOCH - this is the mother in the MULLAY birth records up to 1959.
NZ BDM Show :
Thomas Scott MULLAY died 1924 age 68 (born abt 1856)
Thorwald Scott MULLAY doed 1955 age 58 (born abt 1897)
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/
Birth records show Thorwald was Thomas' son.
Archway shows Thomas who died 1924 was an engineer from Bluff and Thorwald served in WW1.

What makes you believe there may have been 2 Thomas Scott MULLAY's?
Cheers

thank you for your replies.
I have a Thos. Mullay arrived 1861 at Otago from liverpool on board the Lightning, aged 32, but that age doesnt fit with the age at death of the one died 1924. I cannot find him on any other passenger lists, apart from on Papers past going from Bluff to Stewart Island regularly.
1894 he was a candidate for the Licensing Committee, Awarua as a clerk (papers past)
1902 He applied for a patent - NSW Letters Patent (coating for timber to protect from pests)
1904 Bankruptcy.....of Berwick, Contractor (Archway)
1924 death....occup. engineer
On the 1904 one there is also an Annis Scott Mullay named with him. Who is this?
Im confused
1902 He applied for the patent with a man named William Sievwright who I have discovered was a lawyer from Gisborne.
So my question is, are these records all related to the same Thomas Mullay?

I would say the Tom on the boat isn't your guy in Bluff.
Plenty of people got off down south and headed north ...
May be his father ?
If the guy in Bluff is your man then get his death cert.
Heaps of info including how long in NZ.
Thomas Scott MULLAY married Robina Annie TULLOCK 1882
Elvina J MULLAY born 1887
Daisy MULLAY born 1889
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/
There only ten MULLAY marriages on the disc (1850-1956)
lots of girls !!!
1877 - Catherine Eliza
1882 - Thomas Scott
1887 - Elizabeth
1919 - Elvina Joan
1926 - Thorwald
1929 - Phyllis Barbara
1936 - (*)
1952 - (*)
1953 - (*)
1956 - (*)

Thanks Mk2. I think the death cert is going to be the only way.

Hi JColeman
Just a process of sifting through information found, and perhaps not confusing Thomas MULLAY with "a Thomas MULLALY" ) ? ;)
I'll stick my neck out though :D ... and say there was only ONE chap named "Thomas Scott MULLAY".
Certainly he is the same person appearing in PapersPast in October 1902 and March 1904 - in relation to a sawmill / milling contract at Waipori Falls (Waipori Falls Electric Power Company).
1882 - Marriage - Thomas MULLAY, sawmiller of Mataura :
[Marriage shown on register St. Paul's Parish, Invercargill - also a marriage of Catherine Eliza MULLAY to John Caldwell PATERSON 18 August 1877 ... perhaps related ?]
March 1894 - Candidate in Licensing elections at Awarua (dated at Winton 26 March 1894).
24 November 1900 ("Evening Post") - Patent application (notification) - Thomas S. MULLAY of Invercargill:
[There was a firm of lawyers at Dunedin known as Sievwright].
1906 - Baptism of daughter Ellayne Anne Estelle MULLAY - at Bluff.
1918 - Army record for son Thorwald (n.o.k. Father "Mr. T. .. resident at Bluff)
-------------------------------------
"Annis Scott MULLAY - 1904" ???
Hmmm ... I couldn't find that particular reference ?
"Annis" ... may be a misrepresentation of "Thomas" - they sound similar ?
