Title: Wilkinson, Portland House, Kirkby in Ashfield
Post by: Billy Fish on Wednesday 16 December 09 17:48 GMT (UK)
I have a branch of my tree who are listed in the Parish Register (Baptist) approx 1830 as living in Portland House, Kirkby in Ashfield.
Does anyone have any information regarding the building or what it's use / purpose was?

I guess it was where Portland Park nature reserve is now.

You could contact the Conservation Society

Kirkby & District Conservation Society

The Kirkby & District Conservation Society was established in 1975 with the aim of securing the preservation of Kirkby’s local history and to promote civic pride throughout the local environment.

The Conservation Society’s Heritage Centre, on Kingsway, is open to the public and contains a vast collection of old photographs, paintings, plans, artefacts, books on local history and memorabilia. They also have many interesting items for sale, can supply prints and are able to advise on local and family history.

The Heritage Centre really is the place to visit for those with an interest in the history and heritage of Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Danish for ‘Churchtown in a forest clearing where the ash tree is abundant’, as it was named by it’s original founders.

Thanks for the reply. I'm now wondering, having done a bit more googling whether it's could refer to "a Portland House". In the early 1820's houses were built to house the miners at Portland Colliery and were called Portland Row. Maybe if you lived there you were in a Portland House?

I've just posted the info below on the lookup page but if anyone reading this can assist I'd be much obliged for any help

I'm trying to trace my GGG Grandfather Robert Wilkinson who resided in Kirkby in Ashfield in the 1830's. He had Children William (1830) Mary (1833) and Samuel (1837) all shown on later census as being born in Kirkby in Nottingham.
Robert himself was born in Ticknall in Derbyshire abt 1798. By 1851 himself and the three children were in Hetton-le-Hole in Co. Durham working as a miner. By then he was a widower.
The Baptist Parish Register (Kirkby Woodhouse) has a William and Mary Wilkinson born at the right time to a Robert and Hannah Wilkinson of Portland House Kirkby in Ashfield, there was also an older son George born abt 1827. The register stops before Samuels birth date so he can't be confirmed.
What I can't find anywhere is any trace of them in the 1841 census which may help to confirm if the family in the registers is the right family.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
