Title: ELAND - Market Harborough
Post by: goff153 on Friday 18 December 09 11:36 GMT (UK)
My father, Frank ELAND was born in Market Harborough in 1900 but the family were living in their home county of Yorkshire in 1891 and in Derby by 1901 so their stay in MH was fairly short and I am wondering how they came to be there.  In 1891 there was a printer in MH by the name of William ELAND (he founded the local newspaper) and I am wondering if he was a relative whom they were staying with (allthough I can't find him in 1901).

Is anyone researching this family please?   or does anyone have any information about William ELAND and his family?

Further to the above I have now found William Eland the printer in the 1861 & 1881 census - it appears that he was born about 1824 in Toddington Bedfordshire - so no connection with Yorkshire that I can see.

Found the following article :~

A new Wesleyan Methodist chapel was built in King's Head Place in 1813.
In 1871 this was replaced by a new chapel on the Northampton road.

So was Woodbine Cottages the  “Manse” to the Chapel in King’s head Road. ?

Assuming the place of birth for Richard Eland is Hutton Rudby then I may have some details that might help as I have Elands from that area.  All on scrappy bits of paper though.  Mine were ag labs so may not be connected but it is not a very common name.  Let me know if you want me to look.

Andrea - wow!  If you do have anything on the Elands at Hutton Rudby I'd be grateful - they are certainly connected to my family - regards, Godfrey Eland

Voters' list for Hutton Rudby 1843,44,45,46,48
James Ealand abode Hutton freehold garden land occupier John SEdgewick and others tenants
Richard Ealand abode Woodford Essex freehold houses and land occupier James Ealand and others, tenants

I also have information given to me by someone which I have not verified though it ties in with some of my register information and looks to be very carefully researched.  A list of the family from 1716 - 1858.   As we risk boring others perhaps you could let me have your postal address by pm and I will send you a copy after Christmas.  Snowbound at the moment so not venturing out unless essential!

Hi Andrea
I’ve only recently started looking at my family history having been prompted by information my mother gave me, including a link to the Elands of Hutton Rudby.  I saw the name of Jonathan Eland in your post – as a witness to John Eland and Esther Willas’s marriage - and I wondered if you had any more information on Jonathan?  It seems that Jonathan and Esther Bainbridge were the parents of my ancestor Hannah Eland, christened in October 1776.
Could he have been John’s brother or cousin?
I realise that you posted this information some time ago and you may well have now moved on but thought it was worth a try – otherwise I will have to arrange a trip to the local records office as this has got me hooked!
I’d be grateful for any help – especially as this is my first RootsChat post!
Just added this - I should have said that I have Jonathan’s dates as c1750-1832 and married to Esther Gricewood in 1791.  I think Esther’s  maiden name was Bainbridge and she married John Gricewood first in 1783 (but after having Hannah?)

Hi bunting and welcome to Rootschat
I am not sure that I have much more than I have posted already but will have a look when I have a moment.  Still have not got that line onto the computer so it means searching the relevant box.

Godfrey – thanks for checking anyway.
Andrea – thanks, I appreciate you having a search in the old fashioned way!  I’m really enjoying looking around Rootschat, it’s a brilliant resource though I’m a bit worried it will feed this new obsession of mine!

Hi! I'm really, really late to this post, but my 2 x gt grandfather was William Eland, so I've done quite a bit of research on the Elands with help also from the Wesley Historical Society.

John and Jonathon were brothers, sons of John and Sarah
Hannah was the illegitimate daughter of Jonathon and Esther, parish register reads:
bastard daughter of Esther Bainbridge & Jonathan Eland (Borthwick Institute for Archives, Bishop’s Transcripts 1598-1856, Yorkshire Baptisms), he married Esther Gricewood (Bainbridge) after she was widowed  and went on to have Amelia and Sarah (1791) who were twins, (Amelia died 1795) and John b. 1794.

John (Jonathon's brother) also had a daughter called Sarah born 1785, and this is the one that married John de Putron (many trees have Jonathon's daughter marrying him, but she was too young).
Yorkshire, Archbishop Of York Marriage Licences Index, 1613-1839, record no. 34, pg 79
Sarah Eland born 1783 age 41, residence parish Hutton Rudby
John de Putron born 1789 age 35, residence parish Hutton Rudby
License date 3 Sep 1824

John Eland's son Richard was a Wesleyan minister as was Richard's son and grandson (both Richards), Sarah was briefly a minister, and so was John de Putron. This explains why children were born all over the place as they rarely stayed in one place for more than two years.

Richard (senior)'s son William Eland (1823) was a printer in Market Harborough, he married Lydia Hannah Shenton, and one of their daughters, Mary Lucy Eland, married yet another minister John Reeves Brown who was my great grandfather.
