Title: double names ???
Post by: GRACELAND on Monday 10 May 04 17:11 BST (UK)
Any help here names,
in my tree i have middle names you would think of as surnames  ie
                      Richard  Baxter Ballard   /
                      Henry  prince  Ballard
                      Edward prince Ballard
                      Theodosa Baxter Ballard
I know Theodosa  before she married was PRINCE so is it common to pass the name on as in this case three generations  and Baxter still workin on  any one else have
 names like this ????

Yes it was common to pass surnames as middle names I have many many examples in my family tree.  I even have an example where a child was given the middle name which was the aunt by marriage's surname.

In my examples I have:-

Most of the children of Helen Scott and Michael Fallon are called Firstname Scott Fallon but one of the children was called Joseph Faulder Fallon.  I've worked out the Michael Fallon was taken in by Joseph Faulder when his parents died and the name was given to the child as a mark of respect.  I can tell you though it was a redherring for a bit! ;D

Hugh Wallis has created an index of middle names from the IGI:-

An excellent site.

Cheers,
