Can someone tell me where I can find Civilian NON ARMY citation records for Bem`s 1956.
I have searched in vain on Nat Archives. No problem with Army awards but cannot find civilian records.
Can anyone tell me search terms. OR are records held elsewhere?
Thanks

Happy New Year to all.
Can someone tell me where I can find NON ARMY citation records for Bem`s 1952-1956.
I have searched in vain on Nat Archives. No problem with Army awards but cannot find civilian records.
Can anyone tell me search terms. OR are records held elsewhere?

a google brings up this site http://www.militaryarchiveresearch.com/CivilianGallantry.htm which states they are indeed held at the National Archives.

Thanks for your reply,
I tried again, entering different wordings.
All I came up with is military entries. Even put in name of recipient and comes up unknown.
I have tried all individual references given for civilians from the site you suggested. No luck
Thanks for your help.

The place to look for all honours & awards is the London Gazette. They are online & are free to search. Try www.gazettes-online.co.uk

Thanks Blanched,
Got that ages ago. Easy to find person - both Military and Civilian.
The actual citations on Nat Arch are not - for Civilians.
Military no probs!

I am still looking for a record of a civilian BEM awarded in 1956.
It was awarded during a ceremony at Lancaster House on 11th March 1956 but I can find no Citation record anywhere.
It is easy to find military awards in Nat Archives and London Gazette but I have not found record of civilian BEM. ???
It must be somewhere! Anyone know where? ???

Who are you looking for ???

Hi Rosie,
Do you know where civilian records are kept? If you do I can search there?
O
-
Hi
No, I just wondered if by searching on his name it would find him somewhere - I always live in hope :)

Hi Rosie,
Thanks again.
I have searched for months on the name as well as other names of civilain BEM recipients - no finds.
These men and women worked and fought hard for good causes in civilian life.
I want to find citation records not just a photograph in a paper.

Hi Ogleway
I would contact:
Cabinet Office
Honours and Appointments Secretariat
Ground Floor
Admiralty Arch
London
SW1A 2WH
Telephone: 020 7276 2777
Fax: 020 7276 2766
Email: ceremonial[replace with at]cabinet-office.x.gsi.gov.uk
They will either hold the relevant records or should be able to direct you to the relevant department that does.

The National Archives has citations for BEM civilians but only up to 1949 by the sound of it.
See their research guide here

Is it normal for these presentations to take place on a Sunday ?
Rosie

Thanks Monica,
I will try adressess you suggest.
Thanks Ann,
Nat Archives has proved a non starter and other site only gives military awards.
Rosie,
I do not understand question but if you are saying 11/3/56 was a Sunday then I suggest it was only day they could hire hall or get people together!
It was day of award ceremony for what would have been working people. I confess to never having thought about ceremony. Sorry

Hi
Yes 11th March 1956 was a Sunday. I just assumed that as it was a BEM presentation it would have been done by a member of the Royal family during the week. In case you haven't seen it, a link to Lancaster House, as you can see it is no ordinary 'hall'.

Thanks for that Rosie.
Very interesting, I did not even know where Lancaster House was!
You are right, it is no ordinary "hall" :)

Hi Ogleway,
I have an Aunt who received the BEM as a civilian. I'm lucky enough to have the letter from 10 Downing Street notifying her off the forthcoming award and also a typed letter signed by the Queen apologizing as she didn't present the award personally.
I would assume that your relation would have appeared on the New Years Honors List.
I'm not sure if there is an archivist for 10 Downing Street but you may find an article in the local newspaper or national newspaper like the Glasgow Herald or equivalent to where your relation lived listing the new years honors award's for 1956.

You've made me think of a new search Gerry - but still can't see anything of note.
The New Year Honours list was announced in the Times Newspaper on 2 January 1956 but can't see any civilian UK BEM awards, a small number of BEM overseas awards (civilian/military).
There is a fairly big list of Civilian awards for the BEM on The Birthday Honours List in The Times, Thursday, May 31, 1956...but too late if the award you are researching ogleway was actually presented in March of that year.

Hi Ogleway
Do you have mention of his award from the newspapers as like Monica I had looked for a civilian award in The Times in the New Years Honours without result. If you don't perhaps if you give us his/her name we can locate them in the press first, I know that wasn't what you were after but it may give a lead. :)

Mystery solved!
First the list was in the May edition of Gazette.
As suggested, Monica, I contacted the address you gave. The reason I cannot find actual citation is that due to the early date it was not kept.
Thanks to all for your help.
