Griffiths valuation 1857 Dominick Doherty, Townland Bunbeg, Tullaghobegly Parish, County Donegal.

Hi
There are some coastguard records on the National Archives UK dgital microfiche - v large pdf files but many free - not indexed but this part is in tables.
If you've not used them I'll look next time I'm on. Has to be a quiet time for the big files.
Might work better for someone with a bigger system.
Best wishes
:)

I've downloaded most of the Ireland ADM175 Coastguard records from the National Archives UK ... unfortunately these only cover up to the mid 1860s..
Do you know if (and where) Dominick was serving at that stage ?

I found a possible match for him ..
Ref.: ADM175/20 / Pg. 279/440
Station: Guidore (Gweedore?)
Date of Appointment to the Station : 22 Nov 54
From whence Nominated, or Station removed fom : Rathmullen
Name : Dominick Doherty CG
Quality: Com. Btm.
Removed or Absconded : Discharged
Date of Discharge or Removal : 30 June 67
Station Removed to : Superann.
Remarks : 835-14 / 57 £43.16.4
I believe that amount is his annual pension..now that I have a starting point I can try to trace him back. It's unusual to see someone posted in the same location for so long - generally they were moved to different postings.

Thank you, Rathmore, Emms, and Shane for your interest and help. The only info i have on Dominick Doherty is that he was a coastguard and lived in Bunbeg Co Donegal . His wifes name was Charlotte Dyer their son George born Donegal abt 1843, was a coastguard in Dublin then went to Liverpool/Fleetwood. What i would really like to know is Dominick's fathers name and where he came from. I have been told recently that Dominick was related to me ,but my Doherty ancestors were from Dunaff,Urris,Clonmany not Bunbeg Donegal, hoping someone can help me solve this puzzle.

Shane Thank you so much for that info. I am hoping you can find out more on Dominick

found the next record - for him
Ref.: ADM175/19 / Pg. 227/472
Station: Rathmullen (Derry district)
Date of Appointment to the Station : 22 May 51
From whence Nominated, or Station removed from : M...broy [??]
Name : Dominick Doherty
Quality: Comm. Boatm.
Removed or Absconded : Removed
Date of Discharge or Removal : 22 Nov 1854
Station Removed to : Guidore
Remarks : this is difficult to read but believe it says ''Intimacy with inhabitants" This is a fairly common reason for transfers.
I'll try to decipher the 'from' station (see extract below) and see if I can work back further...

That looks like Mulroy (Mulroy Bay is is near Milford)
Dominick Doherty's last posting was Bunbeg - it was unlikely that he came from there.

thx derrylass It is Mulroy....
Ref.: ADM175/19 / Pg. 320/472
Station: Mulroy (Derry district)
Date of Appointment to the Station : 19 Sep 1846
From whence Nominated, or Station removed from : OldHead [Kinsale ?]
Name : Dominick Dogherty
Quality: Comm. Boatm.
Removed or Absconded : Removed
Date of Discharge or Removal : 22 Mar 1851
Station Removed to : Rathmullen
Remarks : per request
many of the Coastguards I've researched seem to end up settling down on an area that they were posted to - sometimes this is where they signed on, and a couple of times to the area they were born... but no definite pattern that I've seen

Hi all. :)
Agnes, I'm glad you're getting somewhere.
Thank you for those, Shane. I've taken off son north of England recrds, but at the rate they came off, I would have had to wait until the crack of dawn or some such time to download more. they're a great resource,
Interestingly, you've said what I was beginning to think from the data. They were moved pretty often. I wouldn't have thought of the "Getting Intimate with the Locals", bit though. You evidently know more about it than me!
Good luck with the rest of the quest Agnes!
Best wishes

I am temp. stuck at the moment - he's not listed at the Old Head / Kinsale station in ADM175/19 or the previous volume ADM175/18
I will have to have a think about this.... will get back to you..

found him again... there were two Stations named Old Head, the one in Kinsale and other (which was closed around this time) in the Westport, Co. Mayo District :
Ref.: ADM175/19 / Pg. 237/472
Station: OldHead / Pigeon Point (Westport district)
Date of Appointment to the Station : 20 Jun 1840
From whence Nominated, or Station removed from : Lepe [?]
Name : Dominick Dogherty
Quality: Comm. Boatm.
Removed or Absconded : Removed
Date of Discharge or Removal : 19 Sep 1846
Station Removed to : Melroy
Remarks : per request
I think the station removed from states 'Lepe' (see screenshot below) - that does not exist as a Station in Ireland. Maybe he served in England for a while ?
edit : it llooks like there was a CG station in Lepe, Hampshire, it's on the 'mainland' opposite Cowes on the Isle of White.

and with these two I believe we are at the beginning of his coastguard service :
Ref.: ADM175/006 / Pg. 328/779
Station: Lepe, port of Southhampton, district Lyminton
Date of Appointment to the Station : 14 Jan 39
From whence Nominated, or Station removed from : Portland
Name : Domk. Dogherty
Quality: Comm. Boatm.
Removed or Absconded : Removed
Date of Discharge or Removal : 20 Jun 1840
Station Removed to : Old Head
Remarks : (no reason given)
Ref.: ADM175/006 / Pg. 371/779
Station: Portland, port of Weymouth, district Weymouth
Date of Appointment to the Station : 16 Aug 32
From whence Nominated, or Station removed from : Portland
Name : Dom. Doherty
Quality: Comm. Boatm.
Removed or Absconded : Removed
Date of Discharge or Removal : 14 Jan 1839
Station Removed to : Lepe
Remarks : (no reason given)
It looks from the Portland record that he signed on there as the from Station is the same as the location. Unfortunately was was transferred to Old head less than a year before the 1841 census - which might have been able to give you some clues.
....The only info i have on Dominick Doherty is that he was a coastguard and lived in Bunbeg Co Donegal . His wifes name was Charlotte Dyer their son George born Donegal abt 1843 ..
Although the Bunbeg/Donegal facts seem to work, It looks like Dominick was posted in Co. Mayo between 1840 and 1846 .. so not sure how the birth of George fits in...

I am so grateful to you for all that research. I cannot thank you enough. Buncrana is the name above Mulroy Bay on the record 22 May 1851 . Buncrana is not far from Clonmany.I am only going by the date of Georges birth 1843 on the 1881 Census records for Fleetwood/Lancashire.

sorry ..hope I didn't mislead you with that .. it's three locations shown in the screenshot, for three different people, the one marked in red is the place that relates to Dominick. The other two are for the coastguards listed before and after him for comparison.
Even so, Mulroy Bay is not that far from Buncrana.. if you cross lough Swilly in a boat!
