Title: Osborn/Wright Family - Isle of Axholme
Post by: CatOne on Tuesday 15 March 05 16:33 GMT (UK)
I would like to hear from anyone who can help me in tracing my family tree who came from the Birmingham area and settled in the Isle of Axholme - Haxey in particular.

My ggg grandma is an Eliza Dunning/Downing, born Birmingham 1850, married Henry John Osborn, Tin Worker. She was in Gainsborough at time of 1881 census, and later moved to Burnham/Haxey. Henry John may have been in Gainsborough Workhouse at the time of the 1881 census, although I have found a Henry John Osborn who died in a Middlesex, London Workhouse in 1883, the year my ggg grandad Henry died. Henry John's mum and dad, Hannah, nee Smith and Henry Astley Osborn also lived in Middlesex for a few years and died there in 1883 and 1877 respectively. (although they originally lived in Birmingham, and I suspect I have many Osborn relatives still there)

Henry and Eliza had a number of children, including a Henry John b. c1875, Hannah (my gg grandma), Elizabeth Caroline, Arthur Edward, Alice b.1883 and a grandchild called Gertrude b.1900. Eliza remarried to a George Wright, Blacksmith and went on to have two more (known) children with him - Ernest and George.

I would love to hear from anyone who also has any of these people in their familytree.

Thanks,
Catherine  :)

Thanks Wendy. I suspected that might be my Eliza, but cant find her future husband Henry John Osborn on the 1871 census(who she married the year after). Theres a few possibles, including one in London, and I was hoping that someone else who also has the Osborns/ Wrights in their tree could help with my "brickwalls".

I have come back to this branch after a long break and found that a couple of Eliza's children have gone walkabouts in the later censuses -

Elizabeth Caroline Osborn b. Gainsborough c1878 - missing after 1881

Arthur Edward Osborn b. c1880 Gainsborough - missing in 1901 census

Anyone have any more luck than me at finding them??  :-\

Thanks
Catherine  :)

Also missing after 1901 census - Alice born 1883 Low Burnham, Haxey, Lincs (she could have married under the surname Wright as I'm not sure if her father is Henry John Osborn or her mum's second husband George Wright)

My great grandad, Hannah Osborn's son, had 12 siblings and I have been told by different descendants that one of Hannah's sisters (I think she only had 2 - Alice b. Low Burnham Haxey 1883 and Elizabeth Caroline b. Gainsborough 1878) had "something to do with the Normanby Estate/Sheffield family". Several contacts say their mums recall receiving food and clothes parcels from whoever it was.......

Wish I had the 1911 census!  ::)

Hi,
The only one I could find in Haxey was this marriage:
Hannah Osborn 21, spinster, daughter of Henry John Osborn deceased of Burnham, married William Hall aged 27 a labourer, son of William Hall labourer on 01.01.1894. from the Parish records of St Nicholas, Haxey.

Henry John Osborn aged 26 a labourer, son of Henry John deceased married Alice Thompson at Epworth, St Andrew's 27.11.1901. Daughter of  John Robert Thompson an engine driver from Epworth.

Ethel May Osborn daughter of Henry John and Alice baptised at St Andrew's Epworth 20.01.1903 father's occupation labourer.

Ethel May Osborn 24 spinster daughter of Harry a steelworker married Edward Alderson 26 a farmer from Leyburn, North Yorkshire, son of Christoper a farmer on

Thanks Kate,

Hannah Osborn and William Hall are my great grandad's parents.

Henry John must be Hannah's brother, named after their father (I have his birth certificate) and looks like hes also "Harry", father of Ethel May Osborn who married in 1927.

Will see if I can find anything else in the bmd index, now I have a couple more names to look for.

Regards
Cat  :)

Hello Catherine,

My name is David and I have just discovered your post having visited this Forum for the first time. I use a web site called Myheritage.com and currently have just under 300 names in my 'Tree' so far. William Hall, and Hannah Hall are my Great Grandparents on my Mother's side. Continuing, then, through Hannah, my tree goes back to Henry Astley Osborn and his wife Hannah Osborn on one side, and John Dunning and Hannah Dunning on the other side of the family. Obviously, I have links to other members of the family, and it would seem that at some point, your family tree and mine are linked.

Regards, David

Hi
Hannah Osborn and William Hall are my great great grandparents, their son Francis Henry Hall was my great grandad. I have the Osborn side of the family back to Henry Astley Osborn parents John Osborn and Sarah Astley but then I get lost.
How far back have you managed to get with the Osborn/Dunnings?
Regards
Catherine

Hello again Catherine,

I have some more information for you, extending the family tree from the wife of Henry John Osborn whose name as you know was Eliza (nee Dunning) bn 13th October, 1850 at Essington Street, Warwick. I should say that these details are incomplete, but you may find them of some use.

Eliza's Father was a John Dunning born circa 1814, and who married Eliza's Mother (Hannah (nee Vickers) on 11th November, 1839, at St George's Church, Newcastle, Stafford. He died on 19th June, 1883 at 17, Sun Street, Tunstall, Wolstanton, Staffordshire.

Eliza's Mother Hannah is believed to have been born in March of 1814, at Acton, in Cheshire.

Let me know if this is of any use to you.

Regards,

David

Hi, thanks for the reply, I need to look through my file to check this side of the family, I think I have Hannah Vickers parents as being Richard Vickers and Frances/Fanny Brereton and Frances parents as being Thomas Brereton and Hannah Vicars, but I'm not sure after that.....
I have John Dunnings parents as being William Dunning and Ann Gleaves. Another researcher gave me info a long time ago and told me that Ann Greaves parents were Joseph Greaves and Lydia Hulme, and William Dunnings parents were Ralph Dunning and Jane Sandford. But I haven't done any of my own research yet on these lines
I'm in North Lincolnshire, are you in this area too?
Regards
Catherine
Ps. I have a Hannah Smith somewhere on the Osborn side I think, coming from Smalley/Morley Derbyshire area, parents John Smith and Elizabeth Walker, they seem to be painters of some kind

Hi Catherine,

Thank you for your prompt reply and the information you have offered.

I live in Hertfordshire, but did live at North Hykeham, in Lincolnshire. My mother was raised in Scunthorpe, and through her maternal line, we have many people in our tree that are mainly from Lincolnshire, and, to a lesser extent, Warwick, and Birmingham.

Regards,

David

Sorry for delay I  replying, just seen this looking through old posts. Yes that's what I have. Which one are you descended from? Have you heard any family stories? My dad was in touch with Great aunt Norah until just before she passed

Hi thanks for the reply, my dad kept in touch with Aunt Norah on the phone and also received letters from her. She told us about relatives in London who had triplets and owned some sort of stenography business but I don't know if they're in the Osborn or Dunning side. Apparently when great aunt Alma, the youngest sibling passed away, all the family papers and photos disappeared.

Hello again,

This time it is my turn to apologise for the delay in replying. I am afraid that the people referred to (by my Nan Norah) in your message don't ring any bells with me.
