Does any one know if my 4th x great grandfather would have a headstone at Upper Coomera Cemetery.
His name is George James Donald died 20/1/1889 buried 21/1/1889 I am not sure if his wife Ann Donald nee Johnstone/Johnston is buried with him or not as I have not been able to find her on the BDM site for deaths. I have no idea who her parents are.
They came out from Rothiemay, Banff, Scotland and helped to build Darling Harbour from what I have been told. I am not sure when they arrived in Australia
They had the following children
Ann Donald 1819-1889
James Donald 1821-1905
Margaret Donald 1823-1906
Walter Donald 1825-1896
Mary Donald 1827-1894
Isabella Donald 1829-1922 my 3rd great grandmother
Jane Donald 1829-1919 (Isabella and Jane were twins)
George Donald 1832-1881
Thank for your help
I have more info on the other children but not much
Will post other details soon
Cheers

Hello Newbe,
There are no MI's for the name DONALD at Upper Coomera Cemetery, perhaps if they had headstones they no longer exsist.
However there are some for your BINSTEAD family:

Binstead, Aris, d. 4 Jul 1968, aged 69yrs, s/w Thomas Charles Binstead (husband)
Binstead, Arthur, d. 1 Oct 1926, aged 79yrs, s/w Harriet Ann Binstead
Binstead, Harriet Ann, d. 24 Jul 1927, aged 73 yrs, s/w Arthur Binstead
Binstead, Mary, d. 10 Nov 1894, aged 66yrs, s/w William Binstead (husband)
Binstead, Thomas Charles, d. 12 Oct 1952, aged 59yrs, s/w Aris Binstead (wife)
Binstead, William, d. 23 Jul 1903, aged 82yrs, s/w Mary Binstead (wife)
Binstead, William, d. 31 Jan 1920, aged 79yrs, s/w Annie Binstead (wife)
These come courtesy of Judy Dickson who transcribed the exsisting MI's in at the cemetery in 2006.

Yes Newbe I do have the BDM cd's, but they are online for free here & have recently been updated:
https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/BirIndexQry.m
I have to go out this afternoon, but I will PM send you a lot of links to the families so you can read the history on them as soon as I get time.
Seems as though your family married into the Binstead, Howard, Hollindale, Thomas, Fowler & Bozier.
That's a few names for you to follow up in the meantime.

Thanks so much for your help
I have to go to work later as well so will have a look at all you send me later on.

Well, as the were are VERY well known families in the district, the history I will send you is going to save you a lot of time.

Also married into Hughes, Hore, Phipps, Harris, Andreson
Now the Anderson one is interesting.
Jane Donald married Edward Anderson
This is from a cousin
Edward Ned Blanchfield changed his name to Blanchfield Anderson as his parents were Convicts the name subsequently became Anderson It is believed that Ned was a Mayor of Allora in the Warwick Shire of Queensland and his marriage at Canning Downs Station was one of the first in the Darling Downs region.

Hi Merlin
May I suggest that you post links to any resources you may consider useful and not already listed at Australian Resources and the individual states. These resources have been compiled and organised by Kris our moderator. Many were resourced by Kris and many were submitted by members of rootschat to assist fellow researchers. A time consuming exercise.
I am sure links to any new useful resources would be appreciated by fellow chatters.

Back in my first post I asked for help to find out where Ann/Anne/Annie Donald died. Her parents are Walter JOHNSTON and Margaret OGILVIE.
I have search the QLD BDM site with no luck. I do not think she remarried. Her husband George Donald died 20/1/1889. I now know there is no headstone for him in Upper Coomera Cemetery after looking at the Chapel Hill link in one of the other replies.
How am I going to find when she died?
Thanks for your help

I am stuck ???
I am trying to find the death of Ann DONALD born 19/1/1858 Gopmburra, QLD Parents are George DONALD and Hannah HUGHES
Ann married William Joseph BARR in 1880. He died in 1891 in Ipswish, QLd
Ann next married William Alfred Walter in 1895
Both marriages have her as Annie and not Ann
I have info saying she died 10/5/1907 in Dalby QLD but can find no death for her on the BDM site
I can not find the death under Barr or Walter
Does anyone have any ideas where to check next
Newbe

She is listed on the index under WALTERS for the date that you have written with the correct parents.

Thanks MERLIN :)
i should have tried it with an "s" at the end of Walter and did not think of it.

Just looked at the AEC for 1925 & he is listed with his wife Vera Augusta living in Townsville QLD AUS.
So that is his marriage in 1923 & for some reason the index has mirrored her details when you put his name in.

This is what it has on the index so that others can see what I am talking about.
I just searched for William Arthur Donald only on the marriage index
1923 #32162 Persson Vara Augusta to Pearson Vera Augusta
I have done this again in case I was seeing things but I am not
I would not think there would be an error like that but these things do happen

I have been looking on the web and have found some children to James DONALD and Mary Ellen (Helen) Hore (Hoare)
Walter John born 1852
Mary Born 1855
John born 1858
Bridget born 1861
James born 1864
George born 1865
Annie born 1898
Emma Born 1871
I can only find A registration for Walter John, John and Emma;s births on QLD BDM. I have also seen Waler John Nad John's births on NSW as well.
Would this mean that some of the births were not registered at all?
Also the only ones I have found a death for are Mary Donald under the surname HOLLINDALE in 1917 and John Donald in 1926 I think. I am finding it hard to find the others. Can any one else see them or any marriages for them please
Thank you so much
I have almost been glued to the computer today and have a major headache. This is doing me head in ::)

Hi There,
I am now wondering if James and Mary went back to Rothiemay, Banff, Scotland with their family.
I see James died 1905 as his death is registered on the QLD BDM site but on the GR trees that i have looked at it says he died in his home country of Scotland. Mary died 1916. death registered on QLD BDM
Do I go looking for them in Scotland?
Can some one please advise me. I have searched QLD and NSW BDM for this family and have come up empty handed
Thanks for all your help

Hi newbe, I am the ggg grandson of george donald who died in Coomera in 1889. His youngest son (also George Donald) is my gg grandfather. The family history has already been meticulously researched by a lady called Denise Cane and she has published a comprehensive book on same. I have a photo of old George Snr. Please advise if you wish more info and I will oblige. The National Library of Australia website has a newspapers section. You can find several articles regarding old George. Simply type "George Donald Coomera" into the search box.

Isabella Smith is buried in Lawnton cemetery only about 20 mins from us. Unfortunately the grave is unmarked.
William Donald is my grandfather's (Norman Victor Donald) brother. He was an electrician in Brisbane, Townsville and finally residing in Nambour Qld. Bill had two children, John and Elwyn. John was killed during WW2 in a Halifax bomber crash off the cost of Scotland. Elwyn never married and only died a couple of years ago in Sydney.
James Donald from Coomera never went back to Scotland. Here is a newspaper article regarding his death.

William Arthur Donald and his wife Vera are 2nd cousins 3 times removed.
I have Vera's death as 1964 and nothing for William. I have them married in 1923. Is this correct? I have nothing else on them.
If you would like to send me a PM there is a little scroll below my user name. When I am on it will light up a light green colour. when off it is dark green.
I would love to learn more.

Newbe

Which Ann? The wife of George Donald Snr is a mystery so far. There is no record of her death in Australia. The boat they came over from Scotland on doesn't mention a death at sea. It may be probable that she died just prior to leaving Scotland. I'm not convinced that she ever arrived in Australia.
If you mean their daughter Ann, who first married Henry Phipps, she then re-married and became Ann Harris. She is buried in Toowoomba cemetery.

Hi there,
Yes it was very useful and have added some to my tree already. I did have a tree on Genes Reunited but have not updated it for quite a while. I use legacy at home for my tree so it makes things easier for me and have had to divide some of the branches to make it easier.
I have still found nothing for Emma Donald 1871 but did find a death for a Ellen Donald in 1920 with the same parents as the other siblings. it looks like some of the births were not registered

Hi,
As you can see, spelling of parents names can vary greatly, try more basic searches on the Queensland BMD site for folk. Try not entering second forenames or only put in father's name or mothers name, as well as the surname. I tend not to insert forename in general searches, unless exact date of BMD is known.
Regards,
Duncan

Hello Newbe,
I was doing searches on some newly found relatives in the Donald/Smith family and came across your post from a couple of years ago. My association with the Donald/Smith family is a little mysterious. All my life I was under the impression that my great grandfather was a Joseph Flynn, married to Harriet Finamor and they lived and died in Brisbane, in the same street I grew up. Now doing family research, I find that Joseph Flynn was not my biological g grandfather, but that Harriet Finamor, married Ernest James Smith in 1894, they had two children, Charles Ernest Smith b)1894 and Eileen Irene Jesse Smith b) 1904 in Sydney(my grandmother). :o Something occurred after 1904 between Harriet and Ernest, but it seems not a divorce, and Harriet took up with Joseph Flynn and they had a further two sons, but never married. Eileen IJ Smith then took the Flynn name, and this is the reason that the Smith connection was lost, and was never mentioned.
Investigating my biological ancestor Ernest James Smith, has proven very interesting as it has turned up my first convict in the family tree, John Smith convicted of pick pocketing in 1833 and sentenced to 7 years transportation at the age of 14. He married Isabella Donald in 1846 and had many many children, one of which was Ernest James Smith.
So Isabella Donald is my (paternal) G G Grandmother and I see she is your 3rd Great grandmother, so I guess we are related in some way.
I am very interested in any information you may have found in your journey on Ernest James Smith and what happened to him. I am having trouble finding any record of him at all after my grandmothers birth. I have her birth certificate, and I have John Smith's d) 1899 death certificate from Ancestry, so I know I have the right family.
Any information we could share would be great. Hope to speak to you soon. Veronica Wark

I think that Ernest James Smith might have married again, did he get a divorce from Harriet, I have not been able to find a record of one, but we can hope. I have no doubt that he would have married again, but this is something I will have to investigate further. Thanks for the link to the cemetery I will check it out now. I hope this covers my two posts. All a bit new on how this all works, but I guess I will catch on. Regards

Hi There,
Ernest James SMITH was buried 26/11/1966.
I am not sure who Elizabeth Bridget SMITH is she was buried with him on 29/11/1977
I have found that Harriet FINAMORE died on 8/10/1951 under the surname SMITH if that helps.
Have not checked yet to see where she is buried.

Hi newbe_nz
I was in the middle of a little family research and came across your question about George Donald. He was also my 3 times great grandfather. A news story was published in Queensland's Courier Mail last week that will interest you as it relates to George's grave site. The story tells us of a block of land about to be sold in the Upper Coomera which was the site of the once Holy Rood Church. The story goes to tells that three bodies have been found by ground scanning. A leader of the church that owns the site has deduced that one of these is the grave of George Donald. If you would like to know more, please reply.

Was very excited to see the news article in Courier Mail / Anglicare . I went to the site on Maudsland Road today and stood near the markers - outlining the area George is reportedly buried. Very exciting if it is him - I have trekked through both cemeteries in Coomera looking for him to no avail. There was a photo on Ancestry.com.au - not sure if it is verified but it claims to be George Jame Donald.... . Look forward to following this thread! And finding others from the down line.

Hi,
this land is finally for sale... did anyone here determine whom the buried graves belong to or been involved with any exhumations etc since 2019?
