Hello Dorris;
Thank you for your help. This may well be, however a birth certificate has turned up, and details as follows.
Emma Rouse, bn 1888, Father John  Rouse, Mother Emily Rouse.
address, East Street, St James, Colchester.

Age matches, Mother matches,  But the rest does not fit.
Have you any details on the rest,  if any might fit into the above.

Thank s
Kind Regards..............

Great, thanks for the details, looks as though, Emily married twice, but , as we now have James as a Fish Hawker.

Hi Tony B

I think James and John are the same person - not two different marriages.  If you notice in 1891 he is called James, is a Fish Hawker and is Deaf and in 1901 he is called John and is Deaf.  It was not unusual for someone to change their first/middle names around.  I have one who on some docs is Frederick and some George - he was actually Frederick George - seems to have been quite common at the time.

Fish Hawker - I'm guessing but I would imagine a fishmonger without a shop.  Sold to people in the street/visited their houses.

Hope this helps

Thats interesting and does make sense, I too had a simaler issue.
If the birth of James/John was found it may well answer this 100%.

And the Fish Hawker , well done...

Thanks again..

BBC did a programme about life in Victorian slums. a hawker was someone who walked the streets selling things. Very low paid, hand to mouth and existence. Would have been a hard life without regular income.

John rouse aged 20 married Emily leach aged 19 by banns at st James Colchester 25/12/1873. He was a labourer. His father was John also a labourer. Her father was George leach also labourer.

John baptised Colchester 25/12/1854 to John and Rachel. They lived in childwell alley.

If you want more, I'll keep looking 😊
Emily is baptised in langham (near boxted) in 1861, alongside siblings Ellen elisabeth, marianne, Hannah. No ages given. Parents George and Emma leach. He was a labourer.

George leach and Emma eady married boxted 1853. His father Joseph leach labourer. Hers Joseph eady labourer.

I found an Emma eady baptised 18/3/1831 boxted to Charles and Sarah. He was a labourer. Doesn't tie with marriage ... the is with Joseph and Elizabeth on 1841 and 1851 census as daughter, so apart from the year, the baptism doesn't tie up. I notice that Joseph and elisabeth are born in nayland and Suffolk and wiston (wissington). These and boxted are on either side of the Essex/Suffolk border. Would be worth posting on the Suffolk board to see if you can go backwards from Joseph. He was born about 1790.

George leach born Sep 1831 but baptised 1832 to Joseph and Eleanor.

Found Joseph leach marrying elisabeth bunner at all saints Colchester 20/9/1814.
Found an ellinor leach as a witness at Philip leach and Mary Wilby's marriage 1820 in myland st michael's. By licence, with consent of parents, so one or both were minors. It says Philip was of boxted, which is where Joseph leach says he was born. St michaels is where ellinor says she was born on the census in 1851. Am assuming this is your ellinor leach.

However, cannot find a marriage for Jospeh and Eleanor. have checked all of the Colchester parishes, Lexden, ardleigh, boxted, Langley, thorrington, Dedham, high wood. West bergholt. Unless it was at nayland or wissington, which is Sussex?

I did find a death for an elisabeth leach aged 33 but if course I didn't write down where. I know it was around 1820 though.
