Title: Glendining Family, Ashgrove, Sevenoaks
Post by: ashleyj on Thursday 21 January 10 12:24 GMT (UK)
First post ever anywhere, so please excuse style if not what is expected.

Am church archivist for St. George's Church Sevenoaks Weald, found a burial vault beneath the Church in 2001.

Occupants are Alexander Glendining and his two daughters Ada and Louisa.

Would be interested to find out if there are any family descendants in the area who have any knowledge of the family's involvement with the Church as the vault must have been built at the same time as the original chapel was built in 1821 but no details apparently exist.

Thanks in anticipation, Ashley

It may not be quite as old as you think, unless of course there was an earlier generation with similar names, quite possible.

The IGI - www.familysearch.org.uk have the following children listed to Alexander and Sarah Glendining

All in Sevenoaks, Kent
Ada - Christened 29 November 1837
Amy - Christened 08 August 1845
Sophia Elizabeth - Christened 01 May 1841

Don't see any entries for Louisa.  You probably have access to the baptism register so may be able to check if there are any other details, such as address.  Meantime I'll check the census to see if there is any mention.

Many thanks for such a rapid response.

I actually have all BMDs for the occupants and would like to see if there are any family descendants with an interest in their past who may have old family papers re. the vault as it must have been very expensive to build a sit is the full width of the nave and runs 14' west from beneath the chancel steps. Builders have told me that to construct this after the chapel was built would not have been at all likely / possible so must be ca. 1821.

There is a family story here as well as the wife / mother was buried in tunbridge wells and not brought back to the family vault. Possibly due to her husband and her being separated and him dying whilst living with his "nurse and constant companion" elsewhere!

If we are able to work forward there may be some clues to living people who you might be able to contact.

Many thanks Mary,

You are indeed a fast worker. There is a sad tale of the two young daughters, they both predeceased their father and were placed in the vault, he then died in 1870 and joined them but they are without their mother.

The whole story of finding the vault was a rather Indiana Jones saga and it would be nice to close the story with the knowledge that their descendants know of its existence.

Lily Boyd Saunders died Q1 1898 Kensington 1a 138 age 70.

If you have access to the marriage register you should be able to confirm this marriage, maybe it would give the address and witnesses? they might give some clues.

Will have to take a break here for a bit, somebody else might be able to take up the chase, failing that I'll give it another go with some of the others, but it may not be until tomorrow.

Are you able, from your Archives, to confirm the burial dates for Alexander, Ada and Louisa?

The death I have found for Ada is Q1 1853 in the Portsea, Hampshire registration distrist.

Does it make sense that Sophia Elizabeth Glendining's death was Q2 1843 Brighton, Sussex, yet she's not on the vault with the others?

and if the following marriages took place in your church, are you able to confirm the witnesses and father's names in order to confirm that I have the right marriages?

Sidney Glendining married Q3 1856 to Emily Jane Perkins
John Boyd Saunders to Lily Glendining Q1 1852 Sevenoaks

My apologies, I don't know why I thought Louisa was in the vault it is indeed Ada, Sophia and their father. I have the death certificates for the girls and your details are correct. As for the marriages, the registers for this period must be at the Centre for Kentish Studies, i.e. the archives in Maidstone. I haven't been for there for ages but will add these checks to my list for next time.

Oh don't worry, I'm assuming I am correct, although that's a very bad thing to do, I just hope I don't fall down.

1881 was a lucky chance

Unfortunately I don't see a marriage for David Ogden and Emily Saunders but perhaps they married abroad, but I do believe because of the birthplace and the presence of Julia Isabella that these are the correct sisters.

Just making a note of the James, Julia and Minna who were visiting Sarah Glendining in 1891, I was hoping the names would have fitted with our family but I'm not so sure.

James Christie[r] Traill married Julia Lamborde 6 August 1857   Sevenoaks, Kent
Sarah appears to have a sister Eleanor who married in 1854 and their father was William.

Do you know what Sarah, wife of Alexander's maiden name was?
Title: Re: Glendining Family, Ashgrove, Sevenoaks
Post by: ashleyj on Friday 22 January 10 14:51 GMT (UK)
That's an easy one - Heald. They were a family from the Manchester area with money in Calico Mills, Alexander effectively married into Sarah's money.

Ah!! I've been on a name collecting mission - looking for the Fanny Richards born Offwell, who I haven't found, but the family living there are William Richards who married Harriet Fry in 1836.  I suspect she must belong to them but can't link it together at present.

But Heald .... I'm sure we've come across that name - yes in the 1881 census with Sarah, must be a relative Rachael, unmarried 42 born Manchester, well I suspect she's not the mother of Fanny.

It would seem that Amy probably didn't marry as there is a death for

Amy Dorothy M Collis 1980 Fulham, 12 0819 giving a birth date of 1 September 1891.

Don't see a death for Maude though  ???

Still wondering what happened to Sidney and Emily with children Douglas and Lily B Glendining.

Found an entry in the Morning Chronicle Saturday, January 23, 1858
On the 20th inst. at Ash-Grove, Sevenoaks, the wife of Sidney Glendining. Esq. of a son.

and also Friday, February 11, 1859
On the 7th inst. at Ash-Grove, Sevenoaks, Kent, the wife of Sidney Glendining Esq. of a daughter.

Is this too much of a coincidence of names do you think?

If I read the index for the 1911 correctly, I believe that Charles Brehmer Heald 28, is living with his sisters Emily Isabel 30 and Mary Helen 35, in Chertsey.

Charles B Heald married Q3 1915 Chertsey, Surrey 2a 150 to Edith H Mason.
Charles Brenmer Heald died 1974 North Cotswold, Gloucestershire 7b 1496 birth date 3 Dec 1882

There is a marriage of a Walter M Heald married Q1 1913 Strand, London 1b 902 to Julie Gurlitt, can't be sure it's him as the middle name isn't given.

In 1911, 25 year old Walter Marsden Heald (born Cheshire) and 70 year old Walter Heald (born Manchester) are in Spilsby, Lincolnshire in a household with a number of other people.

Walter Marsden is a student at law and unmarried at that time so I don't believe the above marriage is his.  He and his father are staying in a hotel in Spilsby and father claiming to be still married.

This is looking like the right one
Marriage of Emily I Heald Q2 1916 Chertsey, Surrey 2a 125 to Waldegrave Mcg Eager

This looks like a Waldegrave Mac Gillicuddy Eager who was born in 1884 in Cornwall.  His father was an Alexander Richard Eager, Clerk in Holy Orders, born Ireland.

I wonder if Emily and Waldegrave went abroad as I can find no evidence of either children or his death in this country.

Just found a great site - http://www.gravestonephotos.com/public/findfamily.php?name=Heald
This wonderful man has taken photographs of gravestones in lots of places around the country, and in his list is Walter Marsden Heald who appears to have died in 1957 age 72 and is buried in St Andrews, Aldringham, Suffolk.  I've sent a request for a photograph of the gravestone, wonder if it will hold any details of others buried in the same grave?

He's also mentioned here http://www.archive.org/stream/innertemplarswho00inne/innertemplarswho00inne_djvu.txt as a member of the Inner Templars who volunteered and served in the great war.  Need to go looking to see if I can find his service records, might be mention of a wife.

I think contacting this website might useful to you http://www.healds.org.uk/bm/e1900_CHS.html  There is a huge amount of Healds research transcribed on the site and the owner would appear to be a Heald himself.

There are mentions of Isabel Julia Krabbe, who we found on a census with the Healds, and she appears to have married a Walter Heald, also mentions of the Eagers on the site.  I suspect the owner should be able to put you in touch with whoever has provided those details/transcriptions and this may give you a living relative of Alexander and Sarah.

Good morning Mary,

Can't believe how much effort you are putting into this for me you are very kind. There is an amazing amount of information here since I last looked yesterday, in response to which is an entry which confirms Sarah's parents and marriage to Alexander which may be useful.

I've received photographs of the grave of Walter Marsden Heald, which I've asked permission to display on here, so I'll do this when I've had permission, but unfortunately there are no other names on the headstone, so presumably nobody else sharing the grave.  As I've found no marriage for him I think this may confirm that he wasn't married so no issue ......

I will look further into other possible descendants later today, but I think that we are nearing the point where you will need to approach other Heald researchers who may be the descendants you need, the easiest way via the link I posted in my last message.

Snippets collected around the internet about the Halls

From The Staffordshire Encyclopedia, Staffordshire's History Online
Church Memorials - Hale
CHURCH. St Mary MEMORIALS Two boards have disappeared, ....... Ernest Byfield Hall of Hales Hall d1955. IN THE CHURCHYARD. Modern chest-tomb with coat of arms - Nora Constance Hall d1916 aged 9 months, William Byfield Hall d1937 aged 27, Emma Byfield Hall d1946, Ernest Byfield Hall d1953.

From the Irish Berry Genealogy site by Robert Fleetwood Berry
Susanna Natalie Osgood ......... married William Byfield Hall, b. 6 Sept 1910, d. 9 Oct 1937.  died during operation. No children.  She went on to marry Malcolm Kelty McLeod, their children would be too far distant for your interests I think.

It's a very common name so without the "Byfield" we wouldn't have had much luck at all.

Don't know what you think but I think I've come to the end of any lines that I can follow forward without help.  Please use that link I gave above and contact the owner of the site, I believe he will be able to put you in touch with other researchers of the Healds.

I hope you have some luck and please let me know if you find a descendant who will be interested in your vault.

This thread will be fairly near the top of any google searches so if anybody else is researching these names they should find it useful.

Good luck
Mary

I don't know if you are still investigating this line, but I am a 'Heald' descendant and would be glad to help if I can.

Hello,
I've just seen your post whilst doing a bit of research myself. A chap called Alexander Glendenning owned (but not lived in) our farm in 1838 I believe...and I also think it's his son lying in your tomb. Looking at 1861, I'm pretty sure he had a wife called Sarah and together they had a daughter called Lily and then your Alexander.

I'm wondering where Ashgrove is? ...and is it linked to Nizels estate?  as our farm was sold as part of the Nizels estate in 1919.

Any thoughts anyone ?  Thank you in advance, Yvette
