Hi, John,

GSP no longer market that software - I was hoping to find a trial version that would work on Vista, temporarily, but no such luck.

I think your easiest option is to find someone with an operating system that your disks will run on, and extract the information to a Gedcom file for use on your machine.

Failing that, you may be able to open the files with Notepad, and "read " the information, but that will probably take as long as inputting from scratch.

Sorry.

Hi John,

I could have a poke around but I can't promise anything.

I'll send you a PM.

You need to find someone who still uses Windows XP and get them to install the program temporarily on their PC and then import your .gft files.

I hope your old program can create a gedcom file because that is really what you need it to do.  If you can create a gedcom file then it can be imported into any program on any Windows platform.

Hi

If anyone is reading the parallel topic on .gft files with Annette?

The converted files look good to me.

I did pm John but as yet no reply.
Offer still stands.

Regards
Ray

I can confirm that Rays conversion from GFT to Gedcom  works fine for me.
I`m having a few issues with PAF5 but will ask for advice  in another thread.

Thanks

Hi Ray,

I also have a gft file that needs converting.

Any chance I can send it to you?

How do I pm on this system?

Thanks

Michael

One problem with these files is that the same extension (.gft) was used by all four versions of GSP Family Tree but files written by later versions cannot be read by earlier versions. Indeed, v1 was a totally different program from the later versions (such as FTM 2008 onwards is completely different from earlier versions).

As others have said, the conversion route is to create a Gedcom file for use with the chosen alternative product.

mbb - you will be able to send a pm after making three posts.

When I first started I used that software, in the version I had there was an option to File > Save as > and then choose the .ged extension, thus making a gedcom file.

Thanks for the info MaryA.

It was something my brother did  and he has switched computers since then and can't find the install media.

I looked at GRAMPS and it seems to do what I needed.

Just can't convert the format

Hi,

now there's a stroke of luck....maybe. Isn't it funny how things work?

I started my family tree in 2006 but left it after it became too time-comsuming.

I've just searched on the internet for "what is a .GFT file? " , because I found one on my hard drive and here I am.

On my shelf is GSP's Family Tree which I used in 2006...

How can I help?

Hi Pete

Kokon pm'd me to ask about conversion on 8/Jan
I responded but have heard nothing since.

Kokon seems to have last been online on 10/Jan

Don't mind carrying out the conversion.
Equally happy to let you polish the problem off.

Hi

(Update for Pete)

Conversion for "kokon" went ok, so for interest and future knowledge, what I did was ..........................

Had to go back to FTMv4 (!!!!!) to find a program capable of reading the version of .gft.
Exported to .ged (&.csv for luck)
Unfortunately the .ged file was pre v5.5 of GEDCOM and FTM2011 will not process it.
Used LEGACYv7.5 to import the said ged (pre-v5.5) and re-export as GEDCOMv5.5 .ged

My wife is hoping to dust down her family tree as she has had the DNA analysis done. I could do with some help to convert a .gft if Ray still has access to the software and operating system  for GSP.

Thanks , Clive

Good morning (to all)

Is it not nice to start the day (nay weekend) with some good news?

Clive, your files are on their way, hope that they are fine?

For the record, "Family Tree 4" [GSP circa 1993?] did the trick.
