Looking for James Simmers JOHNSTON/JOHNSON. Born around 1828 in Barony. Father John Johnston. Mother, Mary. I have found a couple of James, in the IGI records, but not with John/Mary parents. Not sure where the 'Simmers' name came from, but haven't been able to find a link.
Any help appreciated,
Bob Roberts.

Hi Bob,
not a "it were ever thus" but many scottish families 'preserved' the maiden name of the wife by using it as a middle name.
So it is a possibility, but not a cast-iron cert. that James Simmers JOHNSTON/JOHNSON's mother was Mary SIMMERS.
There are several threads on RootsChat on Naming Conventions etc. but the general gist of them all is that
it did happen, but not always, so don't rely on it !
Good Luck,
Bob

G'day again Bob.
Have been down that way with Scottish Origins, Mormons etc, but unfortunately no links so far. Ever hopeful,
Bob.
