My Great Great Grandfather was the licensee of this pub in 1881. The address was 1 Church Street, Tynemouth. I can't find any reference to this pub still being in existence and wondered if anyone local had any valuable knowledge? Is there a pub on the original site named something different, or has the area been razed to the ground? Would like to take a visit but its not really worth the trip from Sheffield if all I am going to find built on the spot is an Argos or Primark!
My Great Great Grandfather was John Seymour Winstanley, his wife was Alice and they lived there with their seven children at the time. Robert, Isabella, Henry, William, Alice, Lilly and Edward. They originally lived on Northgate on the Hartlepool Headland, then moved to Tynemouth, later they lived in Stockton and seemed to have moved back to West Hartlepool by 1911.
Any information about the pub, or the Winstanley family would be most appreciated.

Although Church Street is still there the area has been redeveloped. If you put the post code NE301AB in to search at http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm you can see the present map and also earlier ones.

Thank you Stan, that is a really interesting link. Hopefully i'll be able to pinpoint where the pub was in 1881 from this. According to the maps there Church Street was a much longer street in 1881 and there has been a lot of redevelopment. I also remembered to look on the satellite version of Google maps and that shows new buildings and tarmac.
So, i'll have to rely on recollection and old photographs.

I have had a look at Kellys Directory for 1879 and he was there then.In the 1883 directory there is no Granby Inn listed there,and it is not listed in the 1894 directory either.Looks like it might have closed between 81 and 83 ?

It is still there in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

I have heard of Kellys but as a relative beginner I have not investigated so far or been clear about what information it has. I will go and look now. Will also investigate if the closure co-incides with anything significant happening in the family at that time.

It did not close as it is still listed, as the Marquis of Granby PH, 1 Church Street, North Shields, in Kelly's 1914 Directory.

From a book - Inns and taverns of North Shields by Charlie Steel:
'Marquis of Granby, 1 Church Street and 31 Tyne Street, first recorded in 1822; last recorded in 1940:
The Marquis of Granby was a corner inn, situated on the east side of Church St at its junction with Tyne St, and was always locally referred to simply as 'The Granby'.'
Looking at an old map, it appears to back on to Dockwray Square.

He was Colonel of the Royal Regiment of the Horse Guards in 1758 and Commander in Chief of the British Army in 1766.
He is honoured in a great many pub names because he set up so many of his own men as tavern keepers when they left the army. "

We had a Marquis of Granby near us in Sheffield, didn't realise they were all over the country, but of course it makes sense now.

After a brilliant day yesterday in the local history section at Tynemouth with Joyce I am now the proud owner of 2 copies of photographs of the Granby Inn.
It was a 5 minute walk away from the archives. I was able to stand on the site where it used to be and see the same panorama that my ancestors did. Unforgettable.

My gt gt grandmother, Ruth Stewart, born 08 January 1855, Easington Lane, Hetton le Hole. Co. Durham.
Ruth was the sister of Alice Stewart who married John Seymour Winstanley.

I am researching my husbands / mother in laws family tree. I believe I have found that her great, grandfather was John Seymour Winstanley. Her grandmother was Alice Winstanley who married Arthur Goodchild. My MIL godparents are Jane and Lily Winstanley, who I believe to be JS winstanleys daughters.
Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

I have got lots and lots of information about Alice and her parents John Seymour & Alice Stewart, and indeed Jane and Lily-Maria (pronounced Mariah), who are indeed JS & Alice's daughters. I can email it all over to you if you are able to private message me your email address :)
I can also go back a few more generations from JS Winstanley too! (Let me know if you want that info too)
I have also got a handwritten account of 'life' with the JS Winstanley family, written by the granddaughter of Isabella the eldest daughter. (let me know if you want this too).

Hi Elaine i have just come across your post my husbands grandfather and i think even his farther owned the marquis of Granby i will check on the years some time round the 1930s-50s i have a photo of the outside before it was pulled down and also one or two pics of the inside if you would like copies thanks Ann Carmichael
