Title: Richard Rafter
Post by: enfield on Wednesday 10 February 10 08:24 GMT (UK)
I am searching for information on Richard Rafter who is buried in Ballyfin. I am not sure if there are more than one cemetery in Ballyfin. He died in 1917 and was brother of Cornelius Rafter who died a month or so before him.
Any help in this matter would be very much appreciated. I am happy to help any Laoise researchers with their ww1 dead.
 Kind regards.
 Tom.

Was Richard Rafter in the Royal Irish Regiment? He's commemorated on this memorial in Clonmel but doesn't appear on the CWGC.

I often come across this type of thing. The Cahir memorial is littered with it. 'They' the people who compiled it,  don't and won't tell you the criteria for inclusion. I found men who died of wounds after discharge from the army and other men who died long after the war  and even some lads with their name mis-spelled but the powers that be, put him on a memorial, to confuse us all.
 Regards.

Local war memorials were usually organised by a committee and different criteria were used to compile the names to be included. Often lists were made up by the committee members and members of the poublic were asked for contributions. I know of one local memorial which omits the name of a soldier who won the Military Medal and died in the war (strangely enough his father was on the committee).
It's most likely that records don't survive to explain the criteria used.

St John the Baptist church and cemetery is beside Ballyfin college.

If you turn right at the college gates, then the next left, the gates are there about 50 yards, on the left hand side.
There is a small chain on the gates, but it can be opened.
