Title: New Personal Website
Post by: Chris in 1066Land on Friday 12 February 10 12:58 GMT (UK)
Hi Notts Researchers

I know I have had an archives website here in Sussex for a considerable number of years (www.rootschat.com/history/hastings) - but have never had a personal site up and running properly, so thought it about time that I did.

Over the last 24 hours I have put together the BASICS of a site dealing with my ancestors and Maythorn Silk Mill near Southwell in Nottinghamshire, from whence they came.
Would appreciate constructive feedback either on here or by Personal Message.  The address of my site is

http://maythornemill.webs.com

Looking forward to some interesting comments

Hi,

I have been and had a look and  the site looks great. Easy to navigate and lots of information on it. I dont personally have any ancestors from the area but sure it will help a lot of people who do.
Well done  :)

Hi Mom of Two

Thank you for those nice comments - much appreciated; I am beginning to like the look of it myself now.

Interesting to read the stats on the web site
In the first 24 Hours:
45 visitors of which 43 came via the Rootschat Forum
38 of those came from England, 2 from USA, 2 from Austrailia and 1 from Germany (bet that was Berlin Bob)
All users except 1 were using Windows XP
Average time on the site was 7 mins 20 secs - so people were reading the content
plus lots of other small details - fascinating how you can get all that info isnt it

But once again, thanks for visiting

Hi Chris in1066,

What a great site, so interesting to read the stories and look at the photos.

Exactly what I think family history should be about not just names and dates but also what they were doing and how they lived.

This is something I am looking to with my own research. Not just the who and when but also the WHY
Fantastic

Hi Chris

Nicely set out website with some interesting stories, looking good!

I agree with teaurn's comments about family history being about more than just names and dates and I particularly enjoyed reading Fred's story.

Keep up the good work.

Kerry :)

Hi Teaurn & Kerry

Thanks for those comments and I am glad you liked Freds Story - the knowhow from how to write that came from a correspondence course I did in writing family history from the Institute at Canterbury - I also had to write my own Autobiography as well !! (Incidentally, Fred is my Grt Grandfather)

You hit it on the head when you said Family History is not just Names and Dates - its nice to put them into context and weave them into  whatever else is happening locally and in the world at that time.

I appreciate your comments

Hi Chris

Haven't found a use for the new site yet ... but took a look at the Sussex one (how didn't I find that earlier!? - it's great!).

Noticed you have Sussex emigrants to Sydney NSW in 1839, ... but nothing mentioned about the "James Pattison", which carried quite a number of Sussex emigrants to Sydney, late in 1839 (reached port in early 1840).  Amongst those on board were my John Delves, and the family of his two future wives - he married Charlotte Crouch first (sorry, I don't have my tree handy so have to work by memory here ... her name is incorrectly noted as "Crofts" in the paperwork for the voyage), and then when Charlotte died, leaving him with an infant to raise, he married her sister Caroline.

The Crouch family were about 6 or 8-strong on departure ... another four or five children were born in NSW.

 :)

Hi Deb

Wow, that Sussex site has been up since 2004 - nearly 6 years!!

When I did my Local History Certificate at Sussex University, we were given loads and loads of handouts, especially a load on emigration and photocopied lists from various parish registers including those of Salehurst and other East Sussex Parishes - I transcribed those registers and put them on the web, but I do not know if all the pages were given to us or if they missed a couple - that is why the list is not complete as obviously it did not include your ancestors.
I have those photocopies somewhere upstairs - will have to dig them out and re-check them

Hi netgrrl

Thanks chuck, I had forgotten about that, yes, you are correct as according to my site stats at least 3 have come via other browsers.

So have not got a reason at the moment

Katie, have you seen the latest page - my own autobiography (Childhood Memories) covering the first 12 years of my life - you might get a laugh out of it

Really good, Chris... just wish I lived close enough to my surviving grands to get their stories down on paper; and that I'd asked my late maternal grandad about his service in the RAF in WW2.

Hi there,

Really good site, easy to move around, and interesting to read, and alas for me, I have no known connections to your area, or to any of the names you have listed,  BUT .... its a very good website, much better than most, (not just most better than most family history sites, but much better than many of the corporate sites that have nothing to do with family history).

I'm in OZ, and using a Vista 64 bit OS on an HP workstation with an Nvidia Quadro FX 3600 card.   Recently upgraded the IE to whatever is the most recent version.

Many Cheers,

Its Just Moi Opinion that you should give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done so far.

Hi Chris,

Trust me to be the awkward one!   I'm not at all technically adept but I've gone through the procedure, which, in case it helps you at all, I will relate:

1.  Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.  And yes, it is I.E. 8.
2.  Checking the 'Diagnostics' - www.maythornemill.webs.com(204.2.183.50).
Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response.

Reset the network adapter "Wireless Network Connection".
Resetting the adapter can sometimes resolve an intermittent problem

3.  Repair process gone through.  Result:  There still seems to be a problem with your connection.

Which seems rubbish to me because I don't have network connection problems as far as I know.

Never mind.  Perhaps the gremlins will go away soon.  I'll come back soon and try again.

Hi Chris, you are going to hate me.  :-[ (But you did ask for comments ... so here goes):

Firstly - great work and interesting stories (I read some but not all of them) though I have no links to the area.

The blue edges/borders in "Fred's Story" are a little too close to the text which makes it a little difficult to read. I think you need more white area around your text boxes.

Similar with your bio - there needs to be a bit more space between photos and text.

I like the blue colour - it looks professional - style of font is easy to read.

On Fred's family tree the bright blue text used for some of the names tends to look a bit blurry (or maybe I need new specs  ;)) and does not stand out as much as it could.

White text out of blue background is more challenging to read, though it does look nice.

Been in and done a few changes to make text a bit clearer - Chris

You have included some lovely photos.

Please feel free to ignore all of my comments - I perfectly understand.  ;) I hope this does not come across as super critical. I do not intend it to be that way.

In general a wonderful site - you've done an amazing job.  ;D

Hi Ruskie

No, I am not going to hate you - I appreciate your honesty :-[.

1. I agree about the blue edges being to close to text, but as have yet not been able to figure out how to move them.
2. The Bright blue text is the 'Direct Line' and am trying to get it to go another colour like red for example
3. I wanted a green background, but all those available were either to bright or gaudy

But thanks for the comments

Well done. Even though I'm in Notts, I don't have any Southwell ancestors, but I was also interested in the Macclesfield side as I went to school in Macclesfield.
Keep up the hard work, I know how time consumng it is making sure everything's just right.

Hi Chris, I think it is very nicely done. I really enjoy inclusion of old photos on websites.  When you are down to tweeking the minor details later on, don't forget the apostrophe's for 'Fred's ... '  and  spelling as in  'derelict'.

I know you are getting the construction and arrangment right first.  I also agree with 'teaurn' and 'Kerryb',  lists of names and dates make my eyes glaze over. It's great to have more than that.

Also,  as someone else said, it makes me want to try and do a website too.   :)

Very interesting. My Sharman family came to Southwell in about 1903. Although we have moved around the country since then, I came back to Southwell in 1999. Now I live about a mile from Maythorne Mill as the crow flies. Anyone reading this is invited to see my efforts too at http://homepages.tesco.net/~jksharman/sharmanfamhist2.htm but they are as nothing compared to Chris Swarbrooke's fine pages.

Oops sorry from me too... on the subject of apostrophe errors..

Maythorn Mill & the Nottinghamshire SWARBROOKE's

There should not be one after Swarbrooke... It is plural rather than possessive ;) so it should just be SWARBROOKES or SWARBROOKEs. I can see that might be confusing and make people think the name is Swarbrookes but you have said Swarbrooke underneath so you have clarified it.

Also the font and spacing is great on most pages and very pleasing on the eye -  but on Macclesfield Ancestors it looks a lot different and is quite hard to read (I am on Chrome at the moment but it does the same in IE). Also on the Newpaper Archives it looks smaller.

I do like the site and the content though. Well done. I have Macclesfield folk so will take a good look later.

Milly

Chris, lovely website.
I do have some Southwell connections. Mainly my Merrin(g) branch. James Merrin and his wife Esther Hill were married in Southwell Minster in 1861. They baptised 6 children in Southwell. With the abode being listed variously as Maythorne Mill, The silk Mill, Westgate and Westhorpe. Poor little George only survived 6 months and was buried at the Minster. His abode given as Maythorpe Mill, Southwell.

Hi Chris, nice website on Zouch.

I have a connection there via my Great Uncle's wife, Harriett Gertrude Padgett (later Stevenson). Born 1896. Her Son Harry tells me she was born there. Her sister's are listed on your site via the Baptism records. Interesting to see they spelt their surname without the "d" and with only one "t". I have now added her sister's middle names via your site. So thanks very much!

Cheers, Ade.
