Title: Congregational Chapel??
Post by: bel_jon68 on Wednesday 12 May 04 21:25 BST (UK)
My great grandparents married in 1911 in a Congregational Chapel in Wales.  Does anyone know which religious denomination this would relate to?  (I was under the impression my ancestors were Baptists.)

Many thanks!

Hi there

According to my Oracle

The Congregationalists originated as a Puritan sect led by Robert Browne in the 1580's. They were known at first as Brownists and, until well into the 18th cenury, also as Independants. Their distinguishing feature was their insistence on the independence of each congregation. Their theological views in the 17th century were similar to the Presbyterians, with whom they often associated.
The Congregational union of England & Wales was formed in 1831. Congregationalism proved particularly attractive to the middle classes in both small and large towns. In 1972 the Congregationalists and English Presbyterians joined to form the United Reform Church."
