After years of census abuse, walking through cemetrys, trying to read dodgy handwriting from the 1800's , trying to work out where Aunt Maud went.........................( you know the story ! ).
I've finally got the link to Edward I and therefore all the way back to William I ( with just about every historical character in-between ). In fact I have seven direct links.
I have a direct link to William I through the usual family names , Champernoun, Courtenay, Bonville etc.
I'm not sure what to do with it ? Entry into some peerage book , ask for a discount at Lidl , Buy a Corgi ?
Suggestions on a postcard to :

The Palace

Notify Buckingham Palace of course!.......you do want your invitation to the Queen's garden party
I presume! ;D ;D ;D
-
But did any of them leave you anything in their will?
It's not cheap, running a palace................. ::)

You'll have to behave now and not get involved in any trouble. Once the press get a whiff of a royal scandal they will be camped outside your front door.
Milly ;D

Were they all legitimate ????
Congratulations any way , a satifying research achievement.

Two were legitimate and the other five were from that naughty rascal Henry I ( WIlliams son ).

I think there are quite a few that would have a link to Henry I as there is a lot of published information about him on the net and although it can't be proved (due to his many affairs) I to have a supposed link to him.

I was pretty lucky. From the Bonville's I have over five direct links running at the same time. They split up between two of Henry's wifes ( Nest verch Rhys & Matilda of Scotland ) . The other three are from his recorded illegitimate kids ( Tracy , Fitz Henry & Fitz Roy ). I have suspect links in through Adela, but I have yet to get those proved. The citations are a bit flakey for those.

Better dust off the tiara!!
Hi, we must be cousins of some sort. There must be thousands out there!
My ancestry goes back through the Bonythons in Cornwall UK one married Anne Trevanion a descendant of Ed1's daughter. I didn't inherit the 'Longshanks' from Ed my husband calls me 'short arse'
It's something to tell the grandchildren though!!
-
Does this mean you are the rightful heir to the throne and not that chap in Australia ;D

Isn't every English person of three generations standing descended from Edward I anyway?
-
Is that a fact Redroger, or one of those things that have developed over time till everyone believes it ? :-\
David

During my genealogical journey I've come across many statements regarding decent from the Kings of England, Normandy and Lambeth ( Pearly King decent ).
Here we go :
1 ) 90% of Europe descended from Charlemagne
2) 50% of British descended from William I
3) 99.999 % of the English descended from Edward I
There are currently 61 million people living in Britain today. Let us assume 50 Million are native British ( those with ancestry back to the 9th, 10th & even 11th century ). At the time Charlemagne, William I and Edward I were taking part in that hobby 'procreation' , there were other people in the country involved in the same pastime. The population of England at the time of Domesday has been tentatively estimated at between 1¼ and 2 million.
So if we take Charlemagne, William I and Edward I out of the equation, then those 1-2 million would have only spawned either 50% of today's British or .0009% of today's English - according to the above statements.
I don't think the Math adds up, .......however.......I would much prefer to have descended from some mad Romana-Brit and been part of the ' Unique' minority then a common herbert from William the Bastard .
Descending from 'insert fav Royal connection here ' is only of any value if it can stand up to scrutiny ( i.e proven and backed up by good genealogical evidence ). Is it important ? Not really, but it's a journey that has a conclusion and a solid foundation in which to build the tree even further.
Royalty has been documented throughout the planet for most of its history, so its easier to trace your ancestry back to Charlemagne, William I and Edward I then it is to make a connection with Gundrid the mad axe wielding nutcase from Wessex in the year 540.
If Gundrid and his off-spring had kept records, then that would also fit into the above three rules ?
-
Whatever the perceived link is, descended or related, it's still taken a hefty amount of hard graft and perseverence to get to where you are DSR.
Well done. And back to your original question................now what?
David
-
now what?
David
I wonder if he left me Norfolk in his will :P

The earliest known bearer of a name I am researching Luffman (Leofman) a thane of Hayling Island had it confiscated by Harold Earl of Wessex in 1065. Not been able to join the dots yet though!

William the Conqueror was illegitimate but depending which history book you care to read and thus who was his grandfather, if you pick the right one you can go straight back via Charlemagne to the Romans.

It's all based on Poppa being Rollo's wife and not Aegidia, its through Poppa that historians and genealogist follow a direct path back to Charlemagne. Poppa would be William I 3rd Great grandmother. So Charlemagne would be a distant relative of William.
Thinking about it, the whole thing is a bit of a mess. Other historians cite Pepin, Count of Vermandois (c815-?) has being the Great grandson of Charlemagne. But he is Williams 6th Great grandfather on the other side to Rollo.
I'm glad this lot dont get involved in out trees LOL !
-
Too much for me DSR ???
I thought Poppa was a Rolling Stone ::)
David
-
Hello DSR,If your link is strong you could approach Burkes Peerage they would confim what link there is,this would gain you a place in a future publication. However we may not be calling you your majesty ;),cnogratulations on the link.
Diarmuid
-
By the way David does that mean everyones Poppa was a Rolling Stone,if so that may make life easy for us all as we are all related.
Regards Diarmuid.
-
One big happy family, eh Diarmuid.
That'd be a first. Nice thought though ;)

The link has full citation. All the major familys I link through are already in Debretts. Several books have been written about each family ( both historic and genealogical ).
To be honest, I'm not really into the Debretts or Burkes directorys. But I have a sneaky idea it will cost to get an entry into any of these publications if like me, you hail from a London council estate LOL !.

I read recently that everyone with bluse eyes is related, apparently due to a genetic mutation between 50 and 100 thousand years ago.

Frank Sinatra has a lot to answer for ;)
-
Don't the Royal College of Heralds have all those charts of family history tracing the royal families descent from God, Jesus etc.? Congratulations on getting back to the year dot in one fell swoop!
-
Redroger could have a point here............didn't Sammy Davis Jnr have blue eyes?
May have been Frank's lovechild 8)
David
-
Does Dean Martin figure in the Sammy Davis/Frank Sinatra family tree,i also wondered how far removed from the crown they are. ;D
Diarmuid.
-
It's not a conventional family tree, the family is as in Mafia family. Which of them is the Capo di toto capi, i.e. The Godfather. When he was alive it was Frank, as they are all dead who is it now?
-
Peter Mandelson? ::)
-
Not Mandy! Must be Boris Johnson!
-
Don't know about that Redroger. Have you heard Boris's version of "My kind of town...."
-
No! But he's showing some very alarming tendencies regarding control of policing etc. Must be the Godfather!
-
Can't agrue with that 8)
-
Mandys just the fall guy the real godfather is Brown and i dont mean Joe.
Diarmuid
-
No! The real Godfather is Lord Ashcroft (Does he pay tax or live in Belize?). the man who is attempting to buy the forthcoming election. You have been warned!
My kind of town. Chicago is - How appropriate, wasn't Capone jailed for tax evasion?
-
Where can I buy a Red carpet and a decent size crown ?
-
I can help with the crown :D :D
my red carpet is looking a bit worse for wear :'(

Back another 80 years at least to 985AD when Leofman (an Ipswich moneyer to Ethelred) minted a penny coin. Still no connection though.I say at least because the coin was minted between 978 and 985AD

From these earlier posts in 2010, and Johnson's problem with a spilt bottle of claret we must have been psychic in 2010.

I've just clicked into this one. My advice: buy a crown, the sparklier (is that even a word? :-\) the better and wear it on Christmas Day, declaring in the morning that you are King of All You Survey - grab a beer (or whatever) and enjoy it!
-
Anent this Royal business, if the current lot of long-term unemployed lived in my street they would be a problem family! ;D
