Title: Steen family
Post by: bonjedward on Friday 18 March 05 19:34 GMT (UK)
Wondering if anyone else is researching the Steen family of County Derry?

I found a website for an American branch of the Steen family who emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1755 and are still there:

http://members.aol.com/steenew/history/index.htm

Seems a pretty big family, and a book, THE STEEN FAMILY IN EUROPE AND AMERICA,
was published in 1900. They're what the Americans call 'Scotch/Irish' i.e. Ulster Protestants.

I have a Rebecca Steen, born in Ireland in 1825 or 26, her father Joseph Steen, farmer (dead before 1882). She died in Port Glasgow, Scotland in 1882. She married a police sergeant, Samuel Alexander Wray. He was dead by 1881. I don't know if he ever moved to Scotland, or died before Rebecca moved there. I can't find a death cert. for him in Scotland.
Their children were Margaret Jane (born around 1846 in Ireland), Samuel (around 1840, in Ireland), and William (emigrated to Spring Hill, Pennsylvania in 1870s).
Samuel got married  in St. Columb's Cathedral (Templemore) in Derry, 1865.
Margaret Jane's son was born in the city of Derry in 1871.

Unfortunately I don't know any more about the Steens. All the Irish ones are most likely related, but I don't have enough information now.
I'm going to try posting on:

Christopher, thanks. There's a lot of really useful information on that site.

Unfortunately, I'm no nearer finding my Steens. Maybe the existing 1831 census fragments for Derry might help - Joseph Steen being a farmer, he'd no doubt be living outside the city.

Hello David,

Shantallow and Culmore were outside the city centre. There would have been farms in those areas in the 1830s. Samuel Wray married at St Columbs Cathedral, London Street, Londonderry  in 1865. Try the Cathedral and if the records are not there let me know and I'll try PRONI in Balmoral Avenue, Belfast.

Best Wishes,   Christopher

Anthony, Christopher, thanks again.
Yes, I actually have a copy of that marriage certificate for the wedding of Samuel Wray (the brother of my ancestor Margaret Jane Wray) to Sarah Davis at St. Columb's Cathedral in 1865. I got it from one of their descendants  who I got in touch with via the Internet.
I don't know where or when Samuel's parents Samuel Alexander Wray and Rebecca Steen got married - mid 1840's, I'd imagine.  Rebecca was either born around 1825/26 (according to Scottish death cert.) or 1821/22 (according to Scottish 1881 census). Her husband must have been a number of years older - I understand you couldn't join the RIC if you were married, and could only marry after a number of years' service (he was a police sergeant).

There is a Rebecca Steen, born around 1826 listed at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~goble/data/Steen/

but it doesn't fit with her father being Joseph Steen:

Steen, Rebecca (~1826 - ) - female
b. ABT 1826 in Limavady, County Londonderry, Ireland
father: Steen, Moses (~1796 - 1856)
mother: Simpson, Mary (~1800 - 1850)

I must admit I'm finding it very difficult to find my way around the Irish records - most of my ancestors are in Scotland, and I've got used to things being available on-line.
I've been watching with interest the Ulster Historical Foundation's site:
http://www.ancestryireland.co.uk

who've been adding a lot of BMD indexes, but unfortunately so far only for Antrim and Down. The LDS Family centres where I live (in Denmark) only have Scandinavian microfilms, so no luck there either. Next time I'm in Scotland (maybe next year) I might make a short trip over to Northern Ireland and see what I can find.

On Friday I'm off for a week to San Francisco, and such my fascination with genealogy that I was beginning to look at driving to Salt Lake City for a day or two's research! But my wife's coming too, and doesn't share my enthusiam for genealogy, so I better leave it for now!

There are lots of different Steen branches in Co. Derry. I've a few friends named Steen and one has sent me his research notes as I've been sending him information for years now- which I'll have a look at later tonight.

1831 census only lists name of head of household, religion, number of males and females in the household.
Derry City is on the Donegal border so don't rule out the possiblity of the Steens coming from Donegal instead of Derry.

Do you have Rebecca's Scottish death certificate?- it might list the names of both her parents.

Post by: bonjedward on Tuesday 30 October 07 23:13 GMT (UK)
I do have Rebecca Steen's death certificate, which is where the information on her father comes from. Unfortunately her mother is not listed - although it was her daughter Margaret Jane who reported the death, she must not have known who her maternal grandmother was.

If Rebecca's daughter didn't know the mother's name perhaps the father's name is wrong (just something to keep in mind). Joseph isn't a 'Steen' name that I can find anywhere in my notes or Londonderry Sentinel index (birth, marriages, deaths 1829-1869). I did find an obituary for Mary wife of Moses Steen in 1852 but nothing else.

There is a Joseph Steen on the Irish Flax Growers list index, in Donegal in 1796. So as you say, Donegal is a possibility.

Is the Londonderry Sentinel index on-line, or published as a book?

Londonderry Sentinel index (births, deaths, marriages 1829-1869) compiled by Coleraine branch of North of Ireland Family History Society a few years ago. Their website is www.coleraine-fhs.org.uk

I checked through all of it but didn't find any trace of a Joseph Steen or Rebecca Steen or Samuel Alexander Wray.

Thanks for looking. I've had very little luck with this branch of my family, compared to the rest of my research in Scotland. Since making the original post, I've discovered that Samuel Alexander Wray was not in the RIC, which is a pity as its records are good. He might have been in the Revenue Police, the Railway Police, or the Londonderry Borough Police.

I've found some quite promising records in Donegal that could be the family I'm looking  for, so I've started a new post on the Donegal board.

Yes Phyllis was the cousin, came out from Ireland and lived with Thomas and Violet, and had a cake shop with young Violet. Her father was James Steen who also came to NZ later and died here in1970.  Her sister Betty also came out here and died in Whangarei last year. I remember Phyllis and I met Betty in Whangarei a few years ago when my parents retired there, also went to see her a couple of years ago in a resthome up there.

I have a Mary Maud Moody (I have seen her name written as Matilda) who married Joseph Thompson Steen. He was a provisions merchant. His residence was Londonderry and his father was George Steen, a clergyman. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Moody, a banker, and her place of residence was Limavady. They were married July 11 1878 at the house of Thomas Moody by George Steen. Witnesses were Alexander Nelson Steen and Annie Moody. Hope this may be of help.

Cyclamen,
The following is taken from a book on the history of the Presbytery of Limavady by a local author. The Rev. George Steen was the minister of Duumachose Presbyterian Church from 1833 to 1845. There was some trouble within the congretation and some members left and built what is now 2nd Limavady Presbyterian Church on Irishgreen Street. The Rev Steen left Drumachose to become the minister there on 31 March 1845. He was also the Presbyterian minister of Limavady Poor Law Union workhouse which opened in 1842.
The Rev Steen's father was Thomas Steen of Knowhead and he married Margaret, eldest daughter of Joseph Thompson of Ballyarnett, Derry and the ceremony was performed by the Rev Dr. Cooke, a minister who was foremost on one side of a troubled period in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
Initially the Steens lived in Catherine St. Limavady but later lived at Whitehill where the Rev Steen had a 49 acre farm in Carren. The Rev Steen retired in 1882 but continued to administer to the workhouse until a few weeks before his death on 13 Feb 1897.
The book also mentions a daughter, Mrs. Straham and a son, William who was a bank manager.

I have been connecting the dots of the Lamberton side, one line having moved to Fahan, Donegal, and some of them later back to Londonderry.  I think there is a connection and I just made contact with the base family of Donegal, so, I may have the connection to Steen soon...I hope.  Thanks for the census, as you had the middle name, given as L. on the Census, are you of this line?

I've discovered an autosomal DNA link to Andrew Steen (b. ca. 1818 - Co. Londonderry and  died 21 Aug 1898 in Philadelphia, Pa.) and his wife, Jane with whom he traveled to Philadelphia, arriving on 4-28-1847.  The J. J. Cooke Line's records show that Andrew was of "Racecourse."  The parents brought with them three children, Thomas, 3, Alexander, 2, and Jane, 3 months old.  It's probably not a poor guess to imagine that they named their eldest son after Andrew's father - Thomas - and it's interesting to find in the Londonderry Sentinel mention of the death of Thomas Steen of Racecourse, who died 12 Apr 1863 at the age of 84.  Also, the Irish will calendars show the death of a Thomas Steen "late of Racecourse, Shantallow, County Londonderry, who died 11 Dec 1902.  Looking at the 1901 census there is a Thomas and Letitia Steen, both aged 70, living in Shantallow townland.  The LDS familysearch.org has (but GRONI does not) the marriage of Thomas Steen, son of Thomas, to Letitia Ramsey, daughter of Robert, in Co. Londonderry on 12 Jan 1848.  It appears possible that all three of the Thomas Steens (putative father of Andrew, father of Thomas of 1848, and the one who died in 1863) are one in the same person.  Has anyone looked into this group of Steens -- they are somehow genetically tied up with my Cochrane ancestors from the Limavady area.  Thanks! -- Richard Cochran

Hello Steen Family! I've just found you... I'm one of the New Zealand Steens... I am a grand daughter of Samuel Lamberton Steen, b 01 Dec 1909 Londonderry, d 25 Oct 1991 Auckland... He came out on Corinthic arriving Auckland 25 August 1926 (ex Southampton I think)... (his parents being Thomas Steen b 05 Nov 1879 Ture d 23 May 1951 & Violet Agnes Steen nee Burns b 25 Oct 1886 d 19 Sep 1947).

On Grandpa's birth certificate (Samuel Lamberton Steen) of which we have the original, it shows place of birth as 7 Rock Buildings, then there's a word I can't read - an area of Londonderry maybe? looks like Drama... I have attached a copy of the birth certificate... anyone know...?

Another thing my Dad (Sameul Gordon Steen, known as Gordon - b 19 March 1930 Cambridge Nursing Home, Hamilton Road, Cambridge, d 06 Oct 2015 North Shore Hospital, Milford, Auckland) told us was this branch of the Steen family lived at some stage both in Nicholson Place and Nicholson Square in Londonderry...

Thanks to others of this branch for details of siblings of Samuel Lamberton - that's filled in a few gaps. One of the siblings we had down as Nancy or Phyllis - but I've read somewhere she may be Annie Douglas? also was an Eileen which I haven't found anything on... and a John Wiley which I've got noted b 1916 d 1918 (so an infant at death)

We also have that same photo of this branch of Steens arriving in Auckland on 25 August 1926 on the Corinthic...

Would love any more info anyone has on this branch of the family, or links...

Thanks alot

The address looks like 7 Rock Buildings Strand (the Strand Road area)?

Here's the family in Nicholsons Square in 1911-

Thank you so much, that was quick!!! I think you're right about the Strand, after going through more of my Dad's documents (Samuel Gordon Steen, son of Samuel Lambert Steen), Dad has written a few things down about the family and one is that Samuel Lambert was born 7 Rock Buildings, Strand, Londonderry... so one more thing acquired to the knowledge bank

Thanks again, anything else you have or pointers appreciated

I don't know if he is a relation, but David Harvey Steen married Agnes (Nancy) Acheson in Auckland, New Zealand. Nancy Steen was an artist and considered a world authority on roses. She published a book, as well as had a book published about her, and there is a memorial rose garden in the city.
