Title: William Adkins – “Brick Wall” – last known in Cropredy, Oxfordshire 1781
Post by: bzaoral on Saturday 20 February 10 03:37 GMT (UK)
Charles Adkins (b: 1775) is my wife’s ancestor.

Fact: Charles Adkins s/o William Adkins and Ann baptized Oct 9, 1775
Source: CPR (Cropredy Parish Records)

Fact: Hannah Adkins d/o William Adkins and Ann baptized Oct 9, 1780
Source: CPR

There is a William Adkins marriage to Ann Hawtyn (Hauten) in Cropredy April 24, 1775.  Source: CPR, IGI

There is a death listed for Ann Adkins, wife of William, in Cropredy Mill November 2, 1781. Source: CPR

Questions/Concerns:
How do I prove William Adkins and Ann Hawtyn are Charles and Hannah’s parents?
I can’t find a birth record in Cropredy for William or Ann.
I can’t find a death record in Cropredy for William.
(Theory 1: William is the son of John Adkins and Martha Kingston and moved to Wappenham as his father John’s will provided for “all the close greensward and tenement situate at Wappenham” or
Theory 2: William moved to Thorpe Mandeville and remarried after Ann Hawtyn died. There is mention of a William Adkins of Thorpe Mandeville willing the Chapel in Great Bourton “The chapel remained private property until conveyed to trustees by the Archer family of Little Bourton in 1860; it had come to the Archers by will (1825) of Richard Archer's father-in-law, William Adkins of Thorpe Mandeville (Northants.), who had purchased it from William Claridge in 1803.”   From: 'Parishes: Great and Little Bourton', A History of the County of Oxford: Volume 10: Banbury hundred (1972), pp. 175-184. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=63800  Date accessed: 20 February 2010.

Richard Archer was married to Martha Adkins in Thorpe Mandeville on May 19, 1812 (source IGI). I also found a marriage record (IGI) for a William Adkins and Ann Carpenter in Thorpe Mandeville on Nov 4, 1783. I found an IGI birth record for a Martha Adkins, d/o William Adkins and Ann on May 7, 1788 in Middleton Cheney.)

How do I prove or disprove any of the above quickly and remove the William Adkins Brick Wall?

This just arrived from Northants lookups...

There is this in the Northamptonshire 1751-1812 baptism index

William ADKINS son of John and Martha bapt 2 Nov 1751 at Middleton Cheney

also

John 23 Mar 1753

Thomas 24 Jun 1755

Do you have the marriage?

John ADKINS married Martha KINGSTON 13 Sep 1744 at Wappenham

Now if I can connect this William to Ann Hawtyn in Cropredy and later to another Ann in Thorpe Mandeville...

I found a marriage record (IGI) for a William Adkins and Ann Carpenter in Thorpe Mandeville on Nov 4, 1783.

I found an IGI birth record for a Martha Adkins, d/o William Adkins and Ann on May 7, 1788 in Middleton Cheney.

There is an IGI record for Thomas Adkins s/o  William Adkins and Ann on Sep 9, 1790 in Middleton Cheney.

Hi I know this is an old post but I’ve been researching my Adkins ancestors
Have you searched

A farmhouse in the fields in Chesterton Warwickshire
the Adkins family were farmers
And owned 120 acres of farm land after extensive research the Adkins family is huge but they were all well to do families all related in areas of cropredy and Banbury and Bainton Oxfordshire
And also came from Hampshire and Warwickshire

My 6x great grandfather was John Adkins born in 1794 in Cropredy his father was John Adkins

I was advised to contact the Oxford family history society as they can help after hitting a brick wall
I hope you found the information you were looking for in the last 10 years
