Hi Oblivion,
1901 census (RG13/2517) -
At Smithies, Morville, Shropshire
William Corbett Age 85 - Widower
Thomas Foulkes - Son in Law Age 57 - Gamekeeper b Broseley
Mary Ann Foulkes - Daughter Age 56 - b Morville
Joseph Foulkes - Grandson Age 22 Gamekeeper - b Morville
Thomas Foulkes - Grandson Age 20 - Assistant Gamekeeper
Mary Foulkes - Granddaughter Age 15.
You can track Thomas Foulkes back on the 1891 census as a Gamekeeper at Shirlett (RG12/2100) and 1881 at Smithies (RG11/2628) In the 1851 census (age 7) he is living with George Merrick Age 27 and his wife Mary Age 27 and their son Richard Merrick age 1. The census says Thomas is the "son of the wife"
Hope this helps.

Hi Oblivion,
Just checked on the marriage for Thomas and Mary Ann.
Her surname was Garbett and they married in Bridgnorth in Jun Qtr 1876 (Ref 6a/1201). You can purchase a copy of the marriage cert for £7.
Ancestry had transcribed the 1901 census as Corbett but on closer inspection I can see its Garbett.
William Garbett came from Ditton Priors Shropshire.
Do you need any more census information?

Hi Tall Al,

Hi Oblivion,
1891 Census at Smithies -
William Garbett Widower Age 75 Estate Worker b Hitchwood
Mary Ann Foulkes Daughter Age 46 Housekeeper b Morville
William Foulkes Age 14 b Morville
Joseph Foulkes Age12 ditto
Thomas Foulkes Age 10 ditto
Annie Foulkes Age 8 ditto
Mary Foulkes Age 5 ditto
In 1881 Mary Downes (William Garbett's sister in law) is with the family age 73 - b Culmington.
In 1891 she is with the Rowley family as "Mother in Law" - Head Richard Rowley Age 47; Wife Mary Rowley age 50; Ellen Maria age 14; Mary age 13 and Richard Henry age 9 at Eaton under Haywood, Hungerford.
Willliam Foulkes (b1876) had left home in 1901 and seems to turn up in Norfolk age 24 - Gamekeeper - single, living with the Sherwood family at Colveston, Swaffham.
William Garbett seems to have died in 1909 age 93 - his wife was Ann who was born in Culmington and died in 1877 age 73
1871 census has William Garbett age 55
Wife - Ann age 66
Daughter - Mary Ann age 26
Mary Ann seems to be their only child as the same three appear in the 1861 and 1851 censuses.
I think that William Garbet (note spelling) may have been christened 21 May 1815 to John Garbet and Martha (via IGI).

Hi Oblivion,
If this is all correct here's an update on William Garbet's father (John Garbet) background. Firstly he and Martha (Barker) - I think they married at Acton Round on 7 May 1809 and had 4 children -
John Garbet - born 12 May 1813 - born Ditton Priors
William Garbet - born 21 May 1815 - ditto
George Garbett - born 4 Jan 1824 - ditto
Henry Garbett - born 4 October1827 - ditto
if it is the right John, he seems to have been christened on 21 February 1779 at Ditton Priors the son of John Garbett and Esther.
John and Esther (Rowley) married 4 April 1774 at Ditton Priors - He was born 8 January 1743 at Ditton Priors (died 20 May 1830).
His parents were John Garbett (Christened 4 July 1714 at Ditton Priors) and Elisabeth - possible marriage 6 May 1737 between John Garbett and Elisabeth Miles at Cleobury North (which is just south of Ditton Priors).
In turn his parents were Richard Garbet and Elisabeth - Richard was christened 20 Feb 1682 at Ditton Priors and died 15 Mar 1726. Possible marriage between Richard Garbitt and Elizabeth Smith on 8 Mar 1710 at Quatt Malvern, Shropshire.
Richard's parents were Thomas Garbutt (born abt 1651, died 8 April 1730 at Ditton Priors) and Elisabeth.
Hope this makes sense.

My family is descended from Mary Foulkes Merrick’s brother Thomas Foulkes. He was born in 1830 in Benthall, Shropshire, England.
-
Hi EABS,
That Thomas is my 3x Great Uncle- he is a man of mystery as no one knows if he died in the UK or USA- do you know please? :)
-
My husband is a great-great-grandson of Thomas Foulkes, son of Joice Hall and Morris Foulkes, baptized in Benthall, Shropshire, England 9 November 1830. Sister of Mary Foulkes Merrick.
We know Thomas and his wife and first two children immigrated to New York City in 1857 and 1858. My husband’s great-Grandfather George Thomas Foulkes was born in 1863. Thomas was naturalized in 1868. We know nothing more about Thomas. Family stories say he died young. We have searched but found nothing. Documents and family memories follow Thomas’ three children from young adulthood into the future. Their descendants live all over the United States.

Hi,
I've been wading through Meyricks in Shropshire and putting them into WikiTree (free). I came across Mary Meyrick with her son Thomas Foulkes and followed this through. I did a little more than I might have done because one of my searches found this story so there's a few entries for the Foulkes.
Mary was 20 when she gave birth to Thomas so I suspect she was married previously. I did try looking in Free BMD for Marys that married a Foulkes in Shropshire. If any of the Foulkes who married a Mary died before 1849 (when Mary married George Meyrick) it would be a strong clue. It is also possible Mary had a child "out of wedlock" since I've come across this once or twice with my ancestors.
Here's the WikiTree link to Mary Meyrick - you can look at her descendants.

I've discovered one possibility for Mary's first husband. In 1839 a Thomas Foulkes married a Mary Williams in Montgomery https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?cite=rwha3MQGYm3R8tZX7w0o3g&scan=1
Wikipedia
Several Thomas Foulkes died between 1839 and 1849 in Shropshire, but I don't see enough information on Free BMD to confirm anything, so it could still all be a red herring. I couldn't find much on Ancestry either.

Mary Foulkes (born 4 Nov 1824), eldest child of Maurice/Morris and Joyce/Joice Hall Foulkes. Mary was a servant to Lord Forester of the Willey Estate and it was his lordship who fathered her first son Thomas, born in 1843. She married George Merrick/Meyrick in 1849. George was then a Public House landlord. George and Mary went on to have 6 children. Mary died 8 Mar 1891 (as Mary Meyrick) in Broseley.
Thomas worked for Lord Forester as a gamekeeper as did his son Thomas. Mary’s son Thomas married Mary Ann Garbett.
-
I got that information from a descendant of Mary Foulkes (b 1824) and her son Thomas Foulkes (b 1843). He gave permission for me to post it. I am married to a descendant of Mary’s brother Thomas Foulkes (b 1830).
-
Most of those people are in my public ancestry tree. Brewer Shannon. I have a lot more sources to add.
How are you related to these people?
Elizabeth
-
Hi,
I'm not related. I'm looking into the Meyricks in Shropshire for my own tree. I've been going through all the ones I can find to see how they link up. In doing so I came across Thomas Foulkes, step-son of a Richard Meyrick and followed that line just for fun.

The step-father of that Thomas Foulkes (B. 1843) in my family tree was George Meyrick/Merrick, not Richard. Richard was George and Mary’s first son (B. 1850).
-
Yes, I misremembered when I replied. I have that too in the Wikitree entries I created.

Hello EABS,
