This is a bit of a long shot but I would like to if anyone can tell me if there is still a house called The Elms in Tillicoultry. I am researching the Paterson family who were living there in 1901. Gilbert Paterson was a mill manager. Does anyone know where I can get info on the mills in that area.

Hi ,
Yes the ELMS is still around - address is 12 Walker Terrace, Tillicoultry. It was our family home from 1950ish to 1979 so I know fair amount about it.
Mr Paterson - do you know which mill ?? But regardless I will try and find out for you ( still live in Tilly :-) )

Thanks Charles
I live in Stirling and will try to get over to Walker Terrace for a look at the house.
I have no idea which mill Gilbert Paterson worked in. The family had moved to Tilly from Galashiels. Gilbert had worked his way up through the ranks to become mill manager.
It is another long shot but I thought there might an archive collection for the mill where I might find out how long he worked there. Gilbert died in Alva in 1923 but I have no record of Jane Patersons death.

I'll see what I can find out - Minor point, while The Elms is one of Tilly's imposing villas , I cant think of street name called Paterson - Tilly has habit of naming streets after important / significant people or geo related names - so I reckon Gilbert was not that significant in community
-
Maybe not related but there was a David G Paterson who was a town counciller from 1949-54 - perhaps his son / grandson ?

Try http://www.tillicoultry.org.uk/mills.htm
The Clock Mill pictured, may or may not be the mill you are looking for but it is just around the corner from Walker Terrace. I presume Gilbert Paterson, like most mill managers, lived in close proximity to their place of work.

Thanks Charles and Maddymoss,
I am a landscape gardener very frustrated at not being able to work because of the weather so I think a trip to Tillicoultry is on the cards very soon.

Thanks Isdale
This is quite exciting if the card belongs to Gilbert Paterson. I have posted a comment on the Tilly site.

I just discovered this thread. My 2x great aunt and her family were living at The Elms, 12 Walker Terrace in 1955. The surname was Stewart. I have no idea when they moved there or when they left but we have copies of two letters sent from that address in October 1955.

My family moved in 1955, thought it was earlier than October. My mum is still alive so she may know, will ask her at weekend

It is embossed headed paper so I suppose it is always possible they had already moved and were using up the paper. Presumably my relatives were the family who sold the house to yours so it would be interesting to hear what memories your mother might have of that time. I don’t suppose you have any photos of the front and back do you? We have photos of my dad as a young lad in gardens we don’t recognise. Tillicoultry is mentioned in my grandfather’s journals.
