Title: not at home !!!!
Post by: stevew109 on Thursday 25 February 10 18:02 GMT (UK)
Hi everybody,
My GG Grandfather samuel gibbons whitaker b 1846 Leeds, Yorkshire.
married jane Richards b 1851 from Cotgrave, Nottingham where census`s before and after 1881 shows thats where they lived.
The problem is on the 1881 census samuel is living/lodging at Leeds again

Is there any way I can find out why he was back in Leeds or is it just another mystery we are unable to answer?
Cheers

The 1881 entry is somewhat misleading.  He was in lodgings as follows:

1 Benyons Court Leeds

Ann Norton widow 74 b Aberford, York   Lodging House Keeper
Ann Callaghan 52 daughter married b KnaresboroughHouse Keeper
John Williamson 26 b Leeds Lodger Railway Laborer
Samuel G Whitaker 35 married b  Leeds Lodger  iron moulder

He could have been working there

Could have gone for a funeral or to see a seriously ill relative

Domestic tiff

Doubt you will ever know for sure

Hi Carole
Thanks for the reply, you say he could be working there, does that mean youre thinking he travelled back and forth from Notts to Leeds.
That would have been a real trek back then.
Cheers

No - that would be why he was in lodgings to save that travelling

It's all complete assumption and what you have to remember is that the 1881 census was only for that one particular night 3rd April 1881 so he may have only been in Leeds for a few days
