Title: Dorothy HANBURY-KING nee WHITEHEAD - Galton Lodge, Surrey
Post by: AussieGaz on Sunday 28 February 10 05:25 GMT (UK)
Relatives of ours who migrated out to South Africa, where they are buried, were married in England.

My mothers maternal grandmother was Dorothy Hanbury Hanbury-King (born Whitehead - confirmed from detail obtained in the 1938 book The South African Woman's Who's Who).  She was born around 1870 in Galton Lodge, Surrey and her father was a John Dunstan Whithead of Barnjet, Kent

She died on 23rd July 1946 in Durban, South Africa aged 76 years. She married Frederick Thomas King.

From the Death Certificates of Frederick and Dorothy, it’s recorded that they were married in England.

Family folk law has it that Frederick Thomas King arrived in South Africa with the surname of only King, but on discovering that there were numerous King’s in the country, he decided to change his name to Hanbury-King. He is still recorded on the 1891 Census as living in Stockton, Wiltshire where he was still a "King". My great grandmother was born in 1901 in South Africa, so I assume that the change might well have happened soon after he got married, whenever that was!! I have not been able to confirm what name he arrived in South Africa as.

According to their death certificates, Frederick Thomas and Dorothy Hanbury-King had 8 children.

Would any Rootschatterer have any knowledge at all on Dorothy Whitehead??

thanks

Gaz

Hi skylark

Thanks for the information you provided on Dorothy Whitehead - will add it to my notes.

These days it is more often that the wife takes on the name of her husband, however it seems that in this case Frederick Thomas took on Dorothy's and so it became a double-barrelled surname.

I will try and order a copy of the relevent certificates.

Since February, I have also been sent information from the 1881 census of the Whithead family headed by John D. so its seems to be jelling together slowly

much appreciated and regrads

Hi Alli and skylark

I have to say it once again that RootsChat is amazing.

Just got back from a shocker of a day at the office and opened up my posts, and you have provided me with more information than I ever knew on the family. What a brilliant way to brighten up the day.

My elderly mother who is over 80 will be absolutely ecstatic with what you guys have found out and provided, and I thank you so much for taking the time to do the delving into the various repositories. I will include the additional information to what I have already this weekend when I have some free time.

Kind regards and thanks

Gaz

This has all been very fascinating for me, as Magdalene Rebecca Whitehead (Dorothy's sister) was my great-grandmother.  I have long been interested in Rose Selby (Magdalene and Dorothy's mother) as for some reason  a great many of Magdalene's descendants have all 'had' to bear the name of Selby as a middle name, myself included.

I have often pondered at the influence this lady must have had on her family, that a family tradition should carry  on for so long.  I have yet to find whether any of Rose's other children continued the name likewise!

Magdalene was married twice.  Firstly to an Edgar Ranger, by whom she had two children, Edgar (b c 1888) and Magdelene (b 1880).  Edgar died in 1892 and she subsequently married my great-grandfather, Alfred William Ades.  They had three sons who survived until adulthood - Alfred Dunstan Edmund Selby Ades, Esmund Selby Ades (my grandfather) and Alan David Selby Ades.  The family can be found on both the 1901 census (in Hornsey) and the 1911 census (in Bedford).

Can anyone help me with the whereabouts of the other Whitehead siblings, Maria, Anabel, Maude and Edward in the 1901 census, or their marriages/descendants.

I would love to have a list of Dorothy's children, to add to my details of Rose's grandchildren.  Please feel free to msg me AussieGaz (my distant cousin!).

Regards
Caroline Selby Ades (nee)

Hi Gaz and Caroline,

I have to put my hand up to belonging to this family as well, though a little off to one side!  John Dunstan WHITEHEAD'S parents were John WHITEHEAD and Martha Eliza PIPER.  They had three children before Martha died, and John remarried to Mary MILLES.  I am descended from the second marriage.  The "Dunstan" comes from John's great grandmother Ann DUNSTAN.

I have a copy of the memoirs of Vera Mary Leigh Hunt EVANS (formerley Whitehead) who was also from the second marriage, though she does mention John and Rose's family and the Hanburys.  It is a fabulous account of the Whitehead family at Barnjet.

I will PM you and arrange to send a copy (your Mum will need a really strong cup of tea for this Gaz! ;D)
Caroline you will need to make one more post before I can PM you.

Debra

I would love to read the book.  Unfortunately I am not yet any nearer to finding out why I am named after Rose after all these years, but anything about the family would be fascinating.

This thread fascinated me as my Great Grandmother was one Mabel Barry Whitehead (1883-1945), the second daughter of Lt Col Edmund Whitehead and Georgiana Sarah Carr.  Edmund was the fourth son of John Whitehead of Barnjet and Mary Milles.  A few years ago I was sent a number of individual trees which had been compiled by Vera Whitehead's son, Charles Evans, so I have fairly complete information about this family, and would be happy to share my knowledge with anyone who was interested!

John Whitehead  (1796-1879) was the son of Charles Whitehead (1755-1833) of Ash Place and Mary Miller.  This Charles was the son of the Rev Charles Whitehead (1719-1792), who was vicar of East Grinstead in Sussex, and Anne Dunstan.  His father was Gervase Whitehead (1690-1739) and Elizabeth Rogis or Bovis.  Gervase (another name which stuck in the Whitehead family) was gardner at Knole for the Sackville family.

The Whiteheads are an interesting bunch.  My Gt Gt Grandfather was Chief Magistrate on Heligoland when it was handed over to the Germans in exchange for Zanzibar in 1890.  His brother, Charles, was the first agricultural adviser to the Privy Council, and was knighted for his efforts.  If you read this Debra, I'd be interested to see the memoir and have photos of Barming House and various Whiteheads which I could send on.

Hope this is of some help.

Robert

I'm new to RootsChat so forgive me if I'm not replying correctly to this thread.
I am picking up on the Whiteheads in Barnjet, Kent and have written responses to a few people who have included information/notes - hope this works!
Let me know where I've gone wrong if not. :-)

to AussieGaz

Dorothy Whitehead’s father was John Dunstan Whitehead

One of Dorothy’s brothers (John Dunstan jnr) married into the Hanbury family - Elffrida Mildred Victoria Hanbury
One of Dorothy’s sisters (Clara Martha) married into the Hanbury family - Ernest Osgood - later divorced

John Dunstan Whitehead was brother of Thomas Miller Whitehead
One of this children (Fanny Martha Whithead) also married into the Hanbury family - Edwin Charles Hanbury

…and there were probably more!

The Hanbury family were of status - I have only just started researching them but their family bank later joined with the Lloyds brothers from Birmingham and the end result is the Lloyds bank we know today in the UK.

Dorothy was obviously given the name due to the family connections (I can’t spot a direct link) and my suspicion is therefore that the Hanbury name was used as a means of status.

I live in Kent and travelled over to Yalding today (about 20 minutes) and found the grave/monument where John and Martha Eliza are buried along with their children Thomas Miller, John Dunstan and Martha Anne - I have photos of this and the Church if you’re interested.

As a point of interest, John Dustan jnr married a Rose Selby
She was born in West Malling, where I live.
West Malling is about 10 minute drive from Barnjet (now really part of Barming, outside Maidstone in Kent)

I have only just started searching this line of my family tree but I went to the church next to Barnjet today and found the grave of John Whitehead and Mary (John’s second wife)
The grave of Decimus Whitehead is also there along with Alice Rebecca Whitehead.
There were also a number of Selby’s.

Barnjet is the next property on from the church although it is set back from the road and surrounded by farmland so it can’t really be seen.
I'm intending to try and find out who lives there in order to get in touch so I don’t know if we can continue this conversation on a private message so I can keep you in the loop - I’m new to Rootschat so not sure how it all works.

to carochar
As I mention above - there are number of Selby’s buried at Barming Church so let me know if you would like me to note any of these down as the name is of interest to you.

Debra (Dundee)
Those memoirs have really caught my eye and I would love to learn more about the property, especially as I'm hoping to get in touch with the current owners. I know it’s a cheek with so many people being interested but do let me know if you feel you could share them with me.

robert (Macduff D)
Again, if you would be willing to share any photos you have of Barming from the past, it would be great to be able to provide you with current photos if you don’t have access to these.
I'm not sure where you're from but I'm intending to pay the Kent History library a visit so may be able to find some other photos if you have a particular interest.

In short - to everyone. I live close to where the early Whiteheads lived and it's all of interest to me so let me know if there's anything in particular you would like me to look into, photograph, etc.

Not too sure what has happened however I cannot see me ever having thanked you for all of the information that you shared in your post from some years ago.
Fascinating.
I have not had time to do much on my research, so its great to rekindle the process.
