does anyone know of French Cottages that existed in the 1881 wales census, cardiff? cant find it on todays maps....

they look to be part of Love Lane - French Cottages start after 17 Love Lane & Love Lane Court and Little Frederick St come after it. You can see the streets on this 1910 map, Love Lane is to the right of David Street. Only the west side of the lane was in the enumeration district.

A part of Love Lane seems to be around still, but Cardiff city centre has been hugely redeveloped so I doubt that the buildings from 1881 still exist.

Thanks I am looking at the 1861 census and French Cottages is mention there, also East Street [now Churchill Way] Mary Ann Street .... terrible conditions at that time for lots of Irish Immigrants. Mine are Sullivans and one of them married Margaret Rees's [my grandmother Margaret Peckham] sister Emily. I am still researching ...... there are photos of Mary Ann Street on the Splotlands website, also Little Ireland Cardiff site...

Sorry to reply 2 years late to Splottboy! But I believe Churchill way was east terraces?? Not street?? Which interests me because my ancestors address was aLao east st and I found that this was in the vicinity of love lane and may have Benin called smith st, so am confused. I think I have an ancestor by marriage called Sullivan, possibly Landore court vicinity.
