Title: John and Hugh Donnelly
Post by: donno on Monday 01 March 10 17:19 GMT (UK)
Hi new to this great forum and wondering if anyone can help.  My grandfather Hugh Donnelly died in 1952.  He married Julia Delaney in 1935.  On the marriage cert his father was listed as John Donnelly, retired plumber deceased.  His best man was Michael Donnelly, who I have since discovered was his brother.  The family talk is that my grandfather Hugh had a number of brothers, but as I know nothing about my greatgrandmother, I am finding it difficult to look up anything about the brothers.   I think the family may have lived around Bride Street/Peter Street, as Michael was staying with his sister Mary Williams in the 1911 census.

I'll be watching this thread to see how you get along :D

I haven't got very far with the Donnelly side of my family and I don't have a "Hugh" but I could do!

My Donnelly's lived around Cuffe St, Yorke St and Stephens Green which is not far from Bride St and Peter St at all!

Thank you all so much for your great help.  I can't believe all the great information received.  Hugh was in the army at the time of the 1911 census, so that is why he did not appear on the Irish census.  He was working in Guinness when he married.  Can you post me the link for the English 1911 census.  I have been in touch with Guinness with regard to his work record there.  I have to make an appointment with them to view this.  I have learned more in the last few posts than in almost 6 months of trying to research it myself.

Thanks Obbie, the military one is my Hugh.  Amazing to think he was serving in the army then.  Wonder if he was in any active military engagements before WW1.

Thanks obbie.  I don't think the Hugh in the Connaught Rangers is him because of the 1917 date.  I know from Guinnesses that he left the army in 1919/1920.  I think it may be the middle Hugh because his second name was Bartolomew, so his initial would have been B not P.  Thanks for all your help.  I know Guinness have his army number so hopefully in the next few weeks I will be able to do some more research over there.  Thank you so much for all your help on my behalf, its much appreciated.

Good question, don't know why I think he may have been in the R.D.F. cos my aunts seem to think he was in the C.R.  Will have to check this with them.   Would there have been any reason why he would have left one regiment to go into another especially as the war was still on at this point ?  Will post again as soon as I have any info.  Thanks again.

Hi, I'm new to this as well.  Just thought I let you know that my great grandparents Donnelly lived in 90 Bride Street in 1911.  I haven't come across a 'Hugh' yet though.  My line of Donnellys lived in Clanbrassil Street in 1901, Bride Street 1911,  then Golden Lane and then Synge Street.  If I can be of any help let me know.

Hi Gizmo, I wonder if your line of Donnellys maybe related to my Donnellys.  I have found my grandfathers family on the 1901 census and they were living in Upper Clanbrassil Street.  There was John (my great grandfather), his sons Patrick, Joseph, James, Hugh (my grandfather) and Michael and his daughters Mary and Elizabeth.

By the 1911 census, John Donnelly seems to have died and Mary was married and Michael and Elizabeth were on the census return as visitors.  However, I could find no trace of John Donnelly and as the other sons names are very common I have met a blank wall.

Could you fill me in on a little bit of your Donnellys to see if there are any links.

Just a further update, my father mentioned to me that his Auntie Lily lived in Bride Street, I wonder would she be someone related to you?

Their children –  Esther, Francis, James, Michael, Arthur, Leo and Thomas.

Don't think they are related to my Donnellys, unless of course your grandfather Thomas is related to my greatgrandfather John Donnelly ( don't know - maybe they might have been brothers or cousins or something?).  I am not aware of his siblings so.....who knows!  I haven't got that far with my research, but thanks for checking for me.

Hi all

My grandfather;s sister was born in Golden Lane in 1929. Her name was Alice Donnelly. My grandfather William Donnelly was born when the family was living at 28 York Street.

His father was James and his mother was Kathleen nee  O'connor sometimes called Christina

Hi Leona,

I’m not sure yet if there is a connection between us.  My Great Grandmother, Julia Donnelly (nee Peppard) owned  59 & 60 Golden Lane.  Julia was married to Thomas Donnelly.  Does this sound familiar?  Would you have a date of birth/parents names of James?  I do have a James Donnelly (born in Newry, Co. Down) on my tree, but I believe he was born too early to be your great grandfather.

Sorry I haven't been much help,
Regards,
Gizzmo

Hello Everyone and thank you for all your help.  I still don't know if my Donnellys are related to the Peppard/Donnellys yet.  But I do have a little bit of good news.  I found my Donnellys on the 1901 census.  They were living in 32 Upper Clanbrassil Street and I have found the names of my grandads brothers.  However, as they are called Patrick, James, John and Michael, I'm finding it difficult to get a lead on them.

I checked in the Guinness Archives and found my grandad's record. They had a copy of his Birth Cert (oh joy!!!) and his mothers maiden name was Ann Callaghan.  So now I have another piece of the puzzle.  He had joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in 1909 and was posted to India (hence the reason why I could not find him on the 1911 census).  I have since discovered that he was based in Ahmednagar Fort in India for the 1911 census and that he was demobbed in 1919/1920.  The Guinness record mentioned that he had taken part in the 'European War', but did not list any particulars. Unfortunately, his military record was one of the ones damaged/destroyed in the Blitz, so no joy there.

I have posted on the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Website to see if anyone can give me information on the first batallions movements during the 14/18 war - so fingers crossed.
Again, thanks for all the great help and assistance given.

I have checked Irishgenealogy.ie Church Records website and have since discovered that my grandfather, Hugh Donnelly's siblings also include a Thomas born 28/9/1877. as well as Patrick Joseph, Mary Bridget, John Christopher, Elizabeth, Hugh, James Joseph, Michael and Francis.  Gizzmo I wonder if my Thomas here is your Thomas married to Julia Peppard.

My Donnellys lived in 3 Bonnies Lane, Blackpitts in the 1870/1880/1890 and then seem to have moved to Clanbrassil St Upr.  Eventually Hugh and his wife Julia Delaney (my grandparents) ended up in Ballyfermot.
