Hi
Can anyone help me with this address, my grandmother apparently lived there for a time in 1911 during her divorce. Her name was Rachael Adeline Behn (formerly Massey previous marriage and maiden name was Boulton). and I can't find it on the 1911 census or trace my grandmother by her name
Her sister Ann Marie Sherratt was also living on the Isle of Man in 1911 at Blundell Terrace, Lonan. which I found on the 1911 census.

I cannot see that address either.
I see the co-respondent was living in Lancashire with his sister, I wondered if Rachel was with him but she isn't.

Hi Tressle
What address do you have for John Frederick Behn and which sister?
I have found Oxton Rd Seacombe for later on in 1911 and am going to check that when I go to Kew next week, is it the same address you have found?
I can't find Rachael and the eldest son Harry, I found the younger son Thomas Leslie with Rachael's sister

Hi Tilly
No I meant Percy Crompton Shawcross, the co-respondent in the divorce. I wondered if she was living with him already. I see she married him in 1913. He is in Lancashire living with his single sister.
I did not look for the ex husband but will have a look now.

Hi
Well I have tried many searches and I think Rachael and son Harry were hiding somewhere. Had a look around to see if they went out of the country for any reason and cannot see anything there.

Hi Tressle
Thanks for that, I really appreciate it.
My father did tell me he went abroad to school as he spoke fluent french but have drawn a blank with that search as haven't been able to find a boarding school in france or belguim with english pupils for the period before the 1st WW

Did the address come from the divorce papers. I just wondered if we can follow up any other addresses from the paperwork.
I think she hid from the enumerator though. ;D

Hi Tressle
Yes I photocopied some of the divorce papers when I went to Kew, thats where I got the address The Cliffs, Laxey from, and 19 Oxton Rd
The only other addresses are for set days where she committed adultery in Jun and July, they appear to be a hotel- The Woolton Hall Hydro, Woolton Liverpool and the Sunnyside Hydro, Promenade Extension, Southport.

Just found a reference for planning permission (modern) to The Cliffs Fairy Cottage, Laxey.
In 1901 the address is Near Penfold, Fairy Cottage, Lonan, Laxey and the occupant is a 'Boarding House Keeper'.
Do you think this could be what it is, was she staying in a Boarding House - if it is still there in 1911.
There are Cliff Cottages etc in LONAN as opposed to LAXEY
Tressle
ADDING - I have found Cliffe Laxey, actually in Lonan - and it is a boarding house occupied by Sarah Jane Cornish, but no Rachel.

Hi Tressle
It really is a mystery, how could people evade the census, as both her parents were no longer alive and her only relative was her sister Anna Marie Sherratt and Rachel doesn't appear in their return.
Unless she was abroad visiting Harry at School
I really appreciate the help you have given me.

the address is almost certainly Dumbell terrace (known at that time as Ham & Egg terrace due to number of people who provided for the tourists) - originally a long row of terraced cottages built in 1850's by Mr Dumbel for the Laxey Miners working for his company - leads up to the great Laxey wheel (look up on http://www.manxnotebook.com/gazateer/nlaxey.htm - it can be seen top left on plan
There was a Cliff cottage on shore road in Laxey - this was steeply decending road into old village - by 1911 the mining industry was dying and tourism was a major summer industry

Hi Frances
Thanks for that, I will have to look up that address on the 1911 census
when I visit kew next week.

I have just been having a look at these addresses as I am looking at buying a property in the vicinity. The Cliffs was a boarding house at the top of Old Laxey Hill near Fairy Cottage. Blundels Terrace doesn't seem to be Dumbells Terrace, as in the census return for 1911 it is grouped with other properties around Fairy Cottage - Dumbells Terrace is a mile or so away. I think it may have been the houses being built around Fairy Cottage at the time - a Martha Blundell is running another (then recently built) boarding house, Stroanville, which is on the cliffs just below Fairy Cottage, so the Blundells may have been building other properties there which were temporarily called Blundels Terrace?

Hi
That would make sense if it was a boarding house, as my grandmother was in the middle of an acrimonious divorce and had a sister living on the Isle of Man

Hi Tilly
The Cliffs was a boarding house in Laxey. One of my Quines is the boarding house manager in the 1911 census. It only shows her and her children there. Not sure where her husband (surname Comish) is though and there aren't any lodgers detailed there - I would have though they would be added as visitors? Its detailed as having 10 rooms. It is mis-transcribed however at The Clipps on ancestry. I will add the correction so its easier to locate
Name: Sarah Jane Comish
Age in 1911: 41
Estimated birth year: abt 1870
Relation to Head: Wife
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Lonan, Isle of Man
Civil Parish: Lonan
Country: Isle of Man
Street address: The Clipps Laxey I O M
Marital Status: Married
Years Married: Under 13
Occupation: Boaring House Keeper
Registration district: Isle of Man
Registration District Number: 635
Sub-registration district: Lonan
ED, institution, or vessel: 13/6
Household schedule number: 4
Piece: 34710
Household Members:
Name Age
Sarah Jane Comish 41
Willie Comish 12
Wray Comish 11
Elsie Comish 10
Is it still standing? I haven't been to the IOM for about 30 years and I think we stayed in Douglas, I was only 6ish at the time but I remember going to the Laxey wheel and visiting family.

Thanks for confirming that my grandmother wasn't there for the census.

I've just checked the properties on either side on the returns. Fairy Cottage is listed seperately and iin Lonan, then there is Blundle Terrace, a Stroun (?) Villa and two properties referred to as The Cliffs, both with 10 rooms. The one where my ancestor is boarding house manager is detailed as The Cliffs, Laxey. The other is The Cliffs, South Cape, Laxey. The parish for both is Lonan though. I can't see a Rachel on any of them, but maybe you would want to give your guests some privacy? I don't know what the standard response would be for a boarding house. Strictly speaking I'm sure they 'should' divulge their guests details, but neither one do in this case. My Great Grandmother is missing on both the 1891 and 1901 census. Its annoying but I guess some people didn't want to be found or were genuinely missed.
