GENERAL SOURCES for Londonderry/Northern Ireland/Ireland research:

PRONI (Public Records of Northern Ireland): www.proni.gov.uk
Freeholders Records, Will Extracts, 1912 Ulster Covenant. Also guides to records, etc.
New e-catalogue has lots of material and is well worth searching with names, places, etc.

LDS (also known as Mormon) website: www.familysearch.org
IGI (International Genealogical Index) has some, not all, Irish births 1864-c1882.
LDS records both submitted and extracted so need to be verified.
Online catalogue (using place search) can help find if there are any surviving church records for a particular area.

Index to Irish Civil Registrations (LDS Pilot site):

1831 Census- Dunboe Parish (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nirldy/dunboe/1831cen/1831indx.htm)

1841-1851- Old Age Pension Claims: the introduction of old age pension (min. age 70) c1909 meant 1841 and 1851 census returns were checked as claimants were born before civil registration of births started in 1864. Extracts from these census searches are in the pension claim files (PRONI).
It is sometimes worth checking for people slightly younger than pension age (surprising how many people weren't as old as they said!) or older siblings whose details can fill in family details such as names of parents and year of marriage, townland, etc.

LONDONDERRY LAND RECORDS & MAPS
Townlands, Parishes, etc.
Counties are made up of parishes and parishes are made up of a group of townlands. If you are doing any research in Ireland these divisions become extremely important.

The O'Cahan Princes of Ulster website  (http://clankane.net/index.htm) contains a lot of information about the surnames on the following list The further back you go with your research the more you need to consider the spelling variations ... today you'll find that some families are reverting to the old spelling so some of the next generation of genealogists may have to start with the old spelling, then the present spelling and then the old spelling as they start researching their ancestors.

The Spelling Variations of O'Cahan ...
O'Kane is the anglicised form of O'Cahan and is variously rendered as Kane, Keane, Kayne, Keaney, O'Keeny, Keyne, Cahan, O'Cain, Cain and Keny. In addition, it embraces McAvinney, McEvinney and McQueen. Another large sub-sept of O'Cahan is McCloskey (McCluskey, Cluskey and McLuskey), a numerous north Derry name. McCloskey derives from Bloscaidh O'Cathain (Bloskey O'Kane), who, in 1196, slew Murtagh O'Loughlin, heir to the Irish throne. Other Variant Spellings ; Cahan, Cain, Cane, Gahan, Kain, Kaine, Kane, Kean, McAvinney, McCain, McCloskey, McEvinney, McKain, McKane, McKean, MucKian, O'Cahan, O'Caughan, O'Kane.

Title: Parish histories in the Derry Standard
Post by: Gortinanima on Saturday 06 March 10 15:27 GMT (UK)
I have discovered that the Londonderry Standard newspaper which became the Derry Standard from 1888 sometimes published complete parish histories in its pages. I am aware of four parishes that were covered in county Derry but I am sure there are many more yet to be discovered. Unfortunately the early editions seem to be only available in the British Library.

'Banagher, it's early plantation days' Derry Standard of 20 August 1900

'Faughanvale parish' Derry Standard 12 Nov 1900

'Some items of historical interest about the Waterside/Glendermott parish' Derry Standard 17 Feb 1902

'History of the parish of Tamlaght Finlagan [Ballykelly] Derry Standard 13, 18, 22 & 25 May 1908 [this is a substantial history].

I have a copy of the history of the parish of Tamlaght Finlagan [which I discovered in the Presbyterian Historical Society in a file on Ballykelly Presbyterian Church, the article having been cut out of the paper so it was hard to read the dates]. The article was written by JH Eakin a local historian and contains many genealogical sources of information: Here is the outline of the parish history:

Tamlaght Finlagan [Ballykelly]
1. Its Early People
2. The Plantation of Ulster
3. Sir Randloph Beresford
4. 1630 Muster Roll Fishmongers' estate
5. 1641 rebellion
6. 1663 Hearth Money roll [for the whole parish]
7. 1688 and the Siege
8. 1740 Protestant Householder's survey [whole of parish]
9. The Morrisons
10. Emigration
11. The Land in the Latter Days
12. The Phillip's estate
13. Churches - Prebyterian church in Ballykelly [including a list of elders at Synod of Ulster 1704-1817] /Bovevagh/Myroe/Largy
14. Churches - Episcopalian & Catholic

J H Eakin in his conclusion thanked Mr Tenison Groves Blackrock, Dublin and Mr JW Kernohan AM Belfast who were both professional genealogists and probably furnished him with the hearth rolls & other sources, which were transcribed before the destruction of the PRO in 1922.

I would imagine that the paper covered most parishes in the county proably in the years 1900-1910 - the British Library has a full run of the newspaper and an examination of the paper for the first decade will almost certainly  bring into light other parish histories.

'The Irish Genealogist' Volume 13, no 2, 2011 contains an excellent article by Steven Smyrl concerning the Presbyterian congregation of Balteagh, County Londonderry:

'A census substitute; a petition for Regium Donum from the Presbyterian congregation of Balteagh, Co Londonderry, c1828' discovered in the National Archives, Dublin from the Official Papers series:

The petition contains the names of the head of household by townland and the name of all children present - in total 1023 persons are named. A very useful source that can be used in conjunction with the 1834 transcript of the 1831 census returns for Co Londonderry. The Balteagh registers of baptisms and marriages are post civil registration.

The petition reveals that the congregation of Balteagh c. 1828 consisted of Presbyterians from the townlands Ballyness, Maine, Carrick, Terrydremond, Ballyleagry, Ardmore, Carnet, Terrydoo, Little Derry, Aughinsillagh, Temain, Gortnarney, Cloghan, Drumsurn, Lislane, Drumagosker.

Example from Cloghan townland:
LINTON - 2 [adults] Thomas & wife - 9 [children] Catherine, Margaret, William, Martha, Letitia, John, Thomas, Robert, Samuel.
