Title: REID - Broughty Ferry
Post by: Kim Pearce on Thursday 11 March 10 15:44 GMT (UK)
I am looking for information on the Reid family.  My greatgrandfather was George Reid (a middle name of Kennedy was added at a later date), born in Broughty Ferry in app 1869 to Elizabeth, nee Kennedy, and George Reid.  I have records of the 1871 and 1881 census returns, showing the family.  I'm more interested in birth, marrage and death information.

Thank you so much for the help.  I'll look in to getting a birth certificate.

Do you see anything on his parents (George b. app 1832 and Elizabeth b. app 1835)?

I  have GRO images of George's birth in 1868 and his parents marriage in 1865.
George Senior's father was Andrew Reid a Crofter and his mother was Catharine Stephen.
Elizabeth's father was Donald Kennedy House Carpenter [dec.] and mother Jean Thomson [dec.]

George Senior gives his age as 38 thus born nearer 1827 and Elizabeth gives 37 thus c. 1828

BUT.... perhaps an error on marriage certificate Catharine for Christian
GEORGE REID was born 30 AUG 1827   Old Deer, Aberdeen, Scotland
to  ANDREW REID
and CHRISTIAN STEVEN
OPR

ELIZABETH KENNEDY was born  26 MAR 1829
and christened on 04 APR 1829   Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeen, Scotland
to DONALD KENNEDY  and  JEAN THOMSON
OPR

I have sent a PM to you.

Hi DDJ,
Thank you so much for the help.  Today was a big day for learning more about my Reid family.  Another member helped me track down information on the death of George Jr in Singapore and you have helped us go back another generation.  My Aunt and I are thrilled.  Hopefully we'll be able to go a bit further back...

Do Scottish records go back far enough to track their parents or am I at the end of the line for this particular branch of my family tree?

Hi DDJ,

You are being so helpful!   We really appreciate all your work on our behalf.

Once we gather all the "possibles" together, any suggestions on the best way to confirm the information?

These are only the free Mormon transcriptions of most/but not all, of the official Old Parish Records that they bought rights to copy from GRO Edinburgh around 1991. But they contain LDS submissions from other folks with/without exact data related to some of the incomplete records. I may look at GRO OPRs to see if there is anything related to c. 1790s Reid/Stephen data there.
The census information I search out is courtesy of my worldwide membership of Ancestry.com.
The two images of 1865 and 1868 cost me a couple of pounds or so, but as helping is one of my hobbies, I don't mind doing that :-)

I am hoping someone can help me with a couple more mysteries regarding this same "George Reid".

- George was not given a middle name when he was baptised but at some point in his later life, he took the name "Kennedy" as a middle name.  Where could I find if this was a legal name change?

- on some censuses George was indicated, I believe, as a gardener.  Later records, show him as a master chemist.  Any ideas where I could find information on his education?

- I just heard a family rumour that George senior may have served time in prison.  Where could I find out if this is true or not?

I apologize for so many questions.

It probably wasn't recorded formally. You can use any name you like provided you don't do so with intent to defraud. It's quite common for people to acquire a middle name in later life.

This is George b 1868? Schooling was made compulsory in 1872, and there would have been records of his admission and progress. The question is whether these records have survived and if so where they are. I'd start by asking Dundee Public Library - see http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/library/localhistory

That's more tricky because it would depend on which court sentenced him and that would depend on how heinous his crime was. Records of many court cases are in the National Archives of Scotland www.nas.gov.uk but I think I'd ask Dundee Public Library if they know where the local court or prison records are. You could be in for a long search if they're not indexed and you don't know when he was in prison.

Andrew Reid 63
Elizabeth Reid 13 Daughter born Old Deer
Christian Milne 12 Visitor

Speculation: could Christian Milne be the daughter of William Milne and Margaret Reid, born 26 February 1839 in Old Deer?

Thank you Forfarian.  I do believe that these are Christian's parents.  Thanks for finding them!

Hello Kim,
You probably already have this information by now but I shall reply anyway. In the 1891 census, at Broughty Ferry, 199 Queen St, there is a George Reid age 62, a Gardener, b Old Deer, with his wife Elizabeth, age 61 b Logie-Coldstone, and dau Catherine L, age 25 b Forfarshire, a Millinery Saleswoman and dau Elizabeth, age 19 b Perthshire, a dressmaker. Hope this helps a bit if you had not already obtained this census.
Best Wishes,
Barbara

Hi,

Are the parents of your Andrew Reid of Old Deer named Alexander Reid and Ann Henry?
If so, I think Andrew and my great great great grandfather were possibly brothers.
I’d have to check my records but I think the Milne surname also crops up somewhere.
Anyway, let me know and maybe we can compare notes and see if they were brothers.
