Title: Pocknell
Post by: Abt on Tuesday 16 March 10 18:13 GMT (UK)
Jessie (registered Jessy)Pocknell was born in Fownhope in 1872 she was the 'wife' of Thomas Wood in 1901/1911 Birmingham. No marriage found.
No census entry found for Jessie in 1891 under Pocknell or Wood.
On the 1881 census her unmarried mother Sarah is living with Henry Powell and the children are stated to be his on the entry.
Have tried records for Jessie Powell but found nothing.
Any info.appreciated.

Hi
Do you have Jessey Pocknell birth certificate ?
3rd qtr 1872 Hereford vol 6a page 472 do you have this certificate? who does it state is her father?
You say she married Thomas Wood and you have found no marriage certificate ?

You say that you have found her in 1901 and 1911 census in Birmingham is that correct?
please give 1901 census info
Her mother in 1881 is with a Henry Powell please give census info so we can see who is who.
Have you found her mother on the 1891 census could she have married and jessie has taken her new fathers name? and what of her brothers and sisiters have you found them on later census? some times you can build a picture as to what happened to her family to see whats  happening to her.
 Just a thought!
more info helps us build a picture
cheers cardiff ;) ???

I am a little confused here...the 1881 census shows in
Ferry Road
Fownhope
Herefordshire                     relationship
Henry Powell   UNMARRIED  Head  aged 34  born Fownhope  fisherman
Sarah Pocknell UNMARRIED   None  female 33 born Fownhope,
Alfred Pocknell  son  aged 11 -- scholar b Fownhope
Jessie Pocknell daur aged 8  scholar  b Fownhope
Nellie Pocknell daur aged 6 scholar  b Fownhope
Charlie Pocknell son aged 4 scholar b Fownhope
Julia Pocknell daur aged 1    b Fownhope

and next door but 2 are
William Haines head aged 57 b Fownhope UNMARRIED
Ann Pocknell  female aged 37  UNMARRIED

Emily Pocknell daur aged 16  Fownhope
Henry Pocknell son aged 13  scholar Fownhope

so are we to believe that all those children are illegitimate ? ......allan ???
and just to add....
Sarah Pocknell babtised 18th August 1850 Fownhope, Hereford ( Extracted Record)doesn`t give year of birth
mother Mary Pocknell

I knew that Sarah was illegitimate(mother Mary)
I have found no proof of either Sarah or Ann marrying and the children were registered Pocknell and baptised with only a mothers name.
In the absence of a welfare state in those days it looks as if they both found men willing to keep them and their kids.

Jessie is the great grandmother of my daughter in law.
Her grandfather was Francis J P Wood born to Thomas and Jessie in 1911

I had traced Jessie but still have a problem with Thomas he states he was born in Norton , Worcestershire but I cannot find any birth for him there, have you managed to trace his tree back.

Hello Abt,
It looks as though, at a quick glance, your daughter in law and myself are related. My G/father was B.F.C. Wood. Was Francis known as Frank James?
Thomas Wood - Pershore district, b.15/3/1862, 6c 347, father John, mother Ann nee Woodward. On the IGI - chris. 17/8/1862, Norton Juxta Kempsey, father John, mother Hannah. All on the 1871 cen. in Norton. Thomas Woodward is a lodger, Hannah's father?? To go back further, look for John Wood at Westbury on Severn, Gloucs. I have visited Norton and the Parish Church (church locked ) as it is not too far from where I live. Planning a trip to Pocknell area this summer.

I have this information from a book about Fownhope from 1950. I am Jonathan Wood, I was named after Jonathan Haines from which I desend. There is a photo of this man old man who did a lot of business from even pitt as it is named and became master grafter for the LLoyd family who took over from the Wigleys fishery. He was then know as Squire. On the next page there is a photo of a young fit man named William Pocknell who is the newphew of Jonathan Haines and worked for him as master net mender. Jonathan Haines had a son know as Butler (Bill) Haines and a daughter Mrs George Wood. I believe George also had a sister named Julia. Jonathan Haines would be my great great great granddad. I know that Jonathan Haines and his wife are both buried in Fownhope Church as I have just moved there from Hereford.
