Title: Looking for Herfy/Heify maraige
Post by: jacqlineue on Tuesday 23 March 10 16:53 GMT (UK)
Hello everyone,
I have relented and have agreed to do my husbands family tree.  I have some information about these people but not a great deal. I am looking for information on Sabin Herfy or Heify.
He  had a daughter who is named Lena or Evalyna who we believe was also born in Rochester.  Sabin came from Germany and travelled back and forth to both Britain and Germany.  In 1902 he returned to NY as a widow after visiting Germany.  I would be gratefull if anyone can find any information about his death and the birth of his children.

I also believe that Lena married in America and she married Harry Chester as I cannot find a marraige in Britain for her although some of her children were born here.  One of her sons was born in Rochester NY in 1895.  His name was Harry William.

I hope someone can help with this search.

Thanks for looking

Jac

Hi Jac.

Just to clarify:- Sabin Heify/Herfy was born about 1840 Germany. He appears in the Rochester City Directory for 1888/1889/90 boards 13 Klueh park. labourer. There is no 1890 census which destroyed by fire and he does'nt seem to appear in 1900. Anc..try tree has Sabin married to Katherine Hauk. 3 children listed - one of which is Lena. The other 2 are Daniel 1873 Germany and Barbara 1884 New York. Barbara married to William J Liebeck born 1884 New York.
Evalyna was born 1877 in Germany and married Harry Chester (born 1871) Suffolk. England perhaps in the USA.
Evalyna died in 1947 England Harry Chester Died in England 1948.

The son Harry William Chester born 1895 Rochester. Monroe. New York Married Hilda Florence Perry. Harry died 1971 in England. Hilda died 1976 in England. There daughter Pamela was born 1921 in Scotland and Died 2007 England.

Just to help a little more with a time frame. When did Evalyna and Harry appear in England ? When was the first child born in England ?

Anc..try having technically problem - can't check any further at moment.

Rochester is about an 8 hour drive from New York City today, so I wouldn't expect to find anything there unless you know they were in New York City at some point.

There are some city directories for Rochester that you can browse here:

The search engine isn't perfect, but there are a few mentions of the Herfy family in Rochester papers here:  http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html

I would think that was the family on the passenger list in 1881 were Catherine/Katherine and the children.  ;D

Looks as if Sabin was widowed by 1900 so perhaps Catherine/Katherine died in Rochester.1900 Census Rochester Ward 20, Monroe, New York

Saben Herfi 61 Bornn April 1839 Germany. Widowed. Marriage year 1870. Had 7 children but only 3 survive.  Immigrated 1878 Labourer.
Barbara Herfi 16

So if only 3 children survive in 1900 - thats Evalyna, Barbara and Daniel.
(Magola must have died between 1892 and 1900)

Thanks again for these little pieces of information.  They are starting to fit together nicely and some of the web sites have given more.  I found a newspaper article for Lena in one of the papers.  It was an article about her death in England.  I also found a death notice for Emma naming her sisters, brothers and daughters.

Unfortunately I have to work so spend all day wishing I was at home and retired to spend more time on this,

Thanks again

Jac

Hello Dettori,  I just have to say that you are amazing doing all this for us.  It does look like they are his children and that they are dead.  It is so sad that these three young lads were orphaned.

I thank you again for all your hard work.

Best wishes

Jac

Hi again,
I have the records for some of Evalina's children but not all of them.  I have the ones that were born in England I think.  Also who is Stella?  Is she one of Evalina's children?  I am getting a bit lost at the moment and trying to record everything in order.

I hope to have this done soon.

I suppose it would be a bit cheeky to ask the names of the children  :).

Thanks again for all the help.

Jac

Good God they were busy.
Well I am just glad we don't have them like that these days.  Bad enough with all our mod cons.

I have looked at the thread you gave me and have contacted them so thanks again for that.  I think they may be related to my husband and that would be nice.

Hope you are as good at finding your own ancestors as you have been with ours.

Best wishes

Hello Jac.

Pleased that I have have been able to help you make some progress and I do hope that you get some response.  It would seem that many of those lived and died in London - the last one was Gladys Evelyn in Lewisham. London. 2002.

Its not possible to always have the success at tracing everyone but its been an amazing successful week in the quest to help people.

Hello
I was doing a search of my great grandmother Evalyna Herfy (Heify).  My mother was 1 of 10 children born to her son Percy Frederick Chester. I imagine she has many many relatives!!
I understand Evalyna was born in Germany c1876 before her family moved to the USA.  She travelled to the UK and I believe lived in Fulham, SW London.
As you know she died in London UK on 29/8/1947
