I think it begins with U. I thought it might be Unwin at first, but not sure. The dots on the i on the rest of the page seem to be some distance from the rest of the letter, so trying to work out from this.

On Robert and Mary's 1855 marriage in Port Glasgow it's transcribed as IRVEN .

Port Glasgow / Renfrew / 574/01 0023

You should be able to confirm this from Robert's birth or death record which should both give names of his mother and father.

My first thought was MIRREN.

However,  I can see that what appears to be the first letter of the surname in question is not at all like any of the other capital Ms on the document!

Hi

Thanks for all your help.

Greenrig, looking at Robert Stirling marriage cert it says his parents were James and Mary so i'm confused about the details you found for a marriage for Robert and Mary. Probably me, so fed up with looking at this document :o

I can't find his birth cert, i found him on the census and it states he is from Ireland. As for his death, again, still no luck. He moved to West Ham, London (he was a sugarhouse labourer) and can't find him after 1901,I believe he was still alive in 1912.

Thanks

Chris
