I am confused about the "County of Maid" on an ancestor's death certificate - my gt gt gt gdfather Michael Curran was born there in 1810, but its not on the map anywhere. Is Maid a version of Meath? If not, where in Ireland is the County of Maid?
Help!!

Where was the death certificate issued? Since it says a place of birth (Irish certificates don't) could just be a misinterpretation of a place in Ireland.

He died in 1892 near Dungog NSW Australia. NSW death certificates after 1856 state place of birth if known.
It clearly says
County of Maid.
Thanks for your help, its very kind

Hi Lyndyr :)
Are you able to scan or photograph the 'offending' word, and post it here for us to look at?
What makes you think it might be "Meath"?
Cheers

The county name spoken with certain Meath accents could sound like 'Maid'..e.g. people from the town of Navan.
p.s. cant think of any other county that sounds anything like Maid -the only M counties are Mayo, Meath & Monaghan ... possibly Westmeath

Scan won't add any more information as I got the transcript only and its just type-written.
I was thinking it must be Meath, because what other county even sounds like Maid? Have the counties changed since 1810?
Thanks so much for your help with this puzzle

The only county names to have changed since 1810 are Kings Co to Offaly, and Queens county is now called Laois

I checked out online and you are right about it possibly being pronounced something like "Mate" (not exactly Maid but close enough)
There is nothing else it could be really.
Thanks for your help, I don't have any other Irish relatives so don't even know much geography or history etc. Navan might be a very good clue to WHERE in Meath!
Cheers

thinking about the pronunciation in the area a little bit - I'd say a more accurate approximation would be 'Mead' (as in the drink) ... following the Irish tendency to turn th's into d's

Found this online - Kingdom of Mide From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Flag of Mide (Old Irish pronunciation [miše]; English /ˈmiːš/, also anglicised Meath) was a medieval kingdom in Ireland. It existed as a kingdom from at least the early historic era. Its name means "middle", denoting the fact that it was situated in the very centre of Ireland; it included all of the current County Meath (which takes its name from the kingdom) as well as all of Westmeath and parts of Cavan, Dublin, Kildare, Longford, Louth and Offaly.
Michael's son was the informant on his father's death certificate, perhaps its been twisted in his recollection?
Are there Currans in Navan or County Meath?
Thanks heaps

There are Currans all over Ireland so the surname won't narrow down the area unfortunately. The reference you found is for a medieval place name but yout Michael Currfan would have used the 'modern' county name and that what's probably suffered in the translation.

Meath was also the name of the fifth province of Ireland, and the High Kings seat was in Tara, which is about 10k south of Navan.
The current layout of the counties seems to have been in place since about the early 1600s

Hi Lyndyr its probably supposed to be Meath.
As Shane says the Meath accent can make it sound like Mead. As a Scot who has lived in Navan for 32 years I can vouch for that! ;) ::)

(http://)For what it's worth I have an ancestor whose gravestone says she was born in County Maid Ireland. Died 1891 aged 72 years. If I can figure out how to add a photo here I will show the stone's inscription.

The "Old Fulton NY Postcards" website carries several newspaper references to "County Maid, Ireland" and even more to "County Meade, Ireland". For example, these references include one in the Utica NY Observer of 1885 which helpfully says:
"... a respected resident of this vicinity, is dead. She was born near Trim, County Maid, Ireland, in 1793 ..."
And in the Dobbs Ferry Register of 1940 is an obituary for a woman who "... was born April 26, 1872 in County Meade, Ireland ..." and it goes on to give her parents' names. A quick check has confirmed her coming from the parish of Oldcastle, County Meath.
