Title: 1841/1851 Census Lookup Please - SANDS
Post by: marc roberts on Tuesday 22 March 05 16:26 GMT (UK)
Could I please request a lookup for the following family from 1841 or 1851 census:

Information below given for 1841:

John SANDS (possible occupations - farmer, innkeeper, toll collector)
Janet SANDS (nee MORRISON)

children:
Margaret SANDS (chr. 1812 Govan - marr. 1837 Alex TURNER, Paisley Abbey + Gorbals)
Jean SANDS (born c.1819 - marr. 1840 Wm McINDOE, Barony + Govan)
Janet SANDS (born c.1821 Abbey RENF - marr. 1843 Alex LECKIE, Paisely High Church + Gorbals)
Elizabeth SANDS (born Inclissnoce (??) RENF - marr. 1843 John SMELLIE, Paisley Abbey + Govan)
Mary SANDS (born c.1824 - marr. 1845 John MUIR, Gorbals)
Annie SANDS
Robert SANDS (born c.1826 Paisley RENF - marr. 1852 Janet SCOTT, Liverpool ENG)
John SANDS (born c.1830)
William SANDS (born c.1837 RENF)

I have included above, all the information I have which might help identify the family, or give an indication of their whereabouts. Most of the information is as presented in the IGI, but much of it has been supported directly or indirectly from other sources. The locations given after the marriage are those provided in the IGI (sometimes two different locations are provided - not sure why).

I expect that most of the children will be absent from John and Janet's household, but the purpose of this enquiry is really to try to find out something definitive about the parents, of whom I know almost nothing. I would also be especially interested in information on the sons Robert (my ancestor), William, and John, who emigrated to Australia in 1853.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated,

Kindest regards,

Marc Roberts

Hi Marc...

I am a descendant of John SANDS (F) John SANDS (M) Janet MORRISON...

I have information on John Sands and his descendants in Australia but I do not have any information regarding his parents...

If you could confirm any of the following or add to it in any way I would be most grateful...

John SANDS
(b) 1830 Atherstone, Warwick, England (not sure if this right)
(m) ?
(d) 1907 Brunswick, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

wife Jane BUCHANAN
(b) 1820 Warton, Warwick, England (not sure if this right)
(d) 1883 aged 63 Victoria, Australia

Children: William James, John Buchanan, Hamilton, Robert Hamilton, George, George, Gordon, Jean Morrison, Reginald Alexander...

I have more information on descendants but thought this enough for now... Hope this is of use to you... Any information you can share would be great...

Thanks...

Claire...

Thank you very much for that, Claire.

I'm not sure about the connections with Warwickshire, England, but from the rest of the information you've provided, it certainly looks like the same John SANDS (b. c.1830) from my family of interest, so I'm very keen to share information.

I'll contact you privately and we can exchange e-mail addresses.

Thanks again,

All the best,

Marc

Could I also please take the opportunity to renew the original request for a census look-up on the parents of the family:-

John SANDS
Janet SANDS

children - as shown below - all believed to have been born around Paisley, RENF, between 1812-1837.

Many thanks,

Marc

Thank you so much, Liz. That certainly looks like it could be them. I've checked the 'freecen' site many times, even quite recently, and not found them, but you have come though. I'm not sure whether they have only recently been added, or whether I simply missed them, but I am very grateful for your help.

Kindest regards,

Marc

Hello Marc, Claire and Liz,
I am a grand-daughter of Jean Morrison Sands and therefore by my calculation John and Janet (nee Morrison) Sands are my 3x gt. grandparents.  I think, Claire, you left out a generation - the parents of Jean Morrison and the rest of her siblings you have listed were James Alexander Sands (son of John Sands and Jean / Jane Buchanan) and Isabel Whelan.
I would love to hear from any or all of you.  I have just restarted looking at the Sands line after several years and while I have a number of names, dates, and places there are a great many I don't have - Yours is the first mention of John and Janet Sands I have come across.  And Marc, how do you contact someone on this site 'privately'?

I have a John Sands (bapt. 16 August 1741) who married a Janet Morrison in my family tree -- I wonder if they are connected to the later couple with the same names you mentioned?

Hi

I know this is an old thread but I have a John Sands McIndoe b.1853 in my family tree, he was the son of William McIndoe and Jean Sands (daughter of John Sands and Janet Morrison).

Would be interested to find out the connection you have to him?

Hi Tom,

To continue the world's most drawn-out conversation... :)

I am descended from Robert SANDS brother of Janet SANDS and son of John SANDS and Janet MORRISON. Robert and his two brothers John and William SANDS emigrated to Australia in the 1850's and settled in rural Victoria.

I'd be fascinated by anything you could share about this family.

Cheers,
Marc
