Title: Can anyone link my Crockets to Samuel Rutherford Crockett? COMPLETE :-D
Post by: *sparkle* on Monday 29 March 10 13:54 BST (UK)
I stumbled across the link in Ancestry earlier, but after a look I'm struggling to piece the families together, so wondered if anyone on here with a wee bit of time on their hands could have a look for me. Samuel makes for interesting reading if nothing else

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Rutherford_Crockett

Samuel Rutherford Crockett was a minster then novelist, seems to be of a similar style to Sir Walter Scott; romantic scottish history with a big dose of fantasy thrown in.

Anyway I have most of the census records for this Samuel:

B: 24 Sep 1859 (not 1860 as you will find on the net)
D: 16 Apr 1914 in France (allegedly, I have found nothing to prove this)

From his birth cert he was illegitimate, no father's name but mother was Annie Crocket.

Samuel appeared to change his name whilst attending Edinburgh Uni to a more romantic 'Samuel Rutherford Crockett' Whether Rutherford was his father's name or made up for respectability, I have no idea.

Anyway from the census records I have Annie's parents as William Crocket and Mary Dickson.

From the notes on Ancestry, it may be that William Crocket is related to my G.G.G.G Granny Christian Crocket. William was a farmer of quite a few acres so reasonably well off.

Christian was christened at Lochrutton on 20 sep 1778, she married John Hyslop of Brae, who was also a reasonably well off farmer. Christian's father was John Crocket. I can find nothing more on John Crocket.

Does anyone fancy having a look? I can't see anything for Annie's, Mary's or William's death.

Ideally I would like to find something on Willaim's birth/parents. Or if William and Christian are possibly related??

If nothing else, the story of Samuel Rutherford Crockett makes interesting reading! :D

Thanks
Tx

and I only have Christian in the 1841 census

C1841 Southpark, Lochrutton
John Hyslop Head age 24 Farmer
Elisabeth Hyslop age 24
Christiana Hyslop age 8
Christian Hyslop age 60

Like I said, its an interesting wee problem, so thought I would ask here as I'm bound to have missed something (probably that proves we are unrelated ;) )

I have just found Mary's death:

Mary Dickson widower of William Crocket d. 30 Nov 1884 of senile decay, witness, son Robert Crocket (Ann's brother)

So William's death is between 1771 and 1884...

Hi Sparkle

There's a William Crockett, dying in Kelton (SP has it as Dumfries) in 1875, aged 81 - could be him

Thanks Gadget. I ruled out Dumfries, but Kelton would be correct, I'll take a look.
Thanks!

I remembered from a while ago that they'd allocated 'our' Kelton parish to Dumfriesshire. They seem to have mixed it up with the Kelton village near Dumfries  ::) ::) ::)

It is him :D Thanks Gadget :D

Father John Crocket, farmer (same as Christian), mother Anne Milligan, and death cert signed by Samuel Crocket, grandson

Now I need to dig back in my records as I don't think I ever found Christian's mother...

And I just found Ann Milligan marrying John Crocket in Lochrutton on 11th December 1777.

Christian was born Lochrutton 1778!!

Its GOT to be the same family!! I'm 90% sure Christian and William are siblings...

 ;D

Woohoo.... I think I've 'almost' found my famous relative...

I would like a copy if it's no trouble - we knew Samuel Rutherfurd had died in France but had no evidence of burial in Scotland.

Hope this link is still active.  I have a marriage registration for Agnes Crocket (c1857), a 27 year old dressmaker & James Alexander Macmurray (1854), a 30 year old house painter in Castle Douglas on 19 Sep 1884.  Her parents were James Crocket (tailor) & Janet Baird.  Do you have a link to Agnes in your research?
Best regards
Rob
