Post by: fire on Sunday 04 April 10 06:58 BST (UK)
I am looking for information for my mother in law,  Her fathers names was John James Yansch from Mildura,  if anyone has any information about him or his family it would be very appriciated.
She dosn't know much about him as she was only young when he passed away but she knows he had 2 sisters their names were Marion and Ettie? (married name Alderton)  and she thinks her grandmothers name was Ethal Yansch.

National Library's digitised newspapers

http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

The Argus, Melbourne, Tuesday 26 January 1937
In Mildura Court, John James YANSCH, aged 24, was fined 1 pound for unlawfully assaulting Charlie Lieu, and 1 pound for drunkeness.

There is also a Divorce Court hearing listed YANSCH v YANSCH, 27 November 1940.  No Christian names given - it may not even be your family.

The National Archives site has two YANSCH men shown as having served in WW2, including John James who gives his NOK as Olive WILLIAMS.  There is also a chap Harold John MARTIN who gives his NOK as Ethel YANSCH>

None of these records have yet been digitised but you can ask for them (pay a fee).

There are no Yanschs listed in SA, maybe they changed their name to how it was pronounced ??
Johann August JANSCH b 25.8.1872  - Johann Wilhelm Heinrich JANSCH and Maryann BROWNLEY  Head of Julia  DIS: Kap # 112453
If this is him he had 2 siblings. His mother is listed as  SAVARNEY  and SAVIANEY on the other birth regs.

Also on the NAA files is a dgitised record for one
JOHN WILLIAM HENRY YANSCH of Wentworth which is near Mildura.
He states he is from Germany and came to NSW via South Australia. He is married with 3 children and ONE ADOPTED SON.

Perhaps he is related ;)

Electoral rolls - Some of the family seem not to be enrolled consistently - for example Ethel is on the Rolls in 1914 and 1924 and then pops up again in 1942.  All sorts of reasons for this, of course.

1914
Ethel YANSCH, home duties, Olive Ave, Mildura
1924 Ethel is at Benetook Ave Mildura

1931
John August (farm labourer) and Maud Alice YANSCH at Tresco

1936, 1937
John James YANSCH (Labourer) at Riverbank, district of Mildura

1937
Maud Alice YANSCH, home duties, 10 Roy St, Wangaratta

1942
Ethel YANSCH, home duties, 41 13th Street, Mildura
John James and Olive Myrtle YANSCH (Labourer) 111 Langtree Ave, Mildura

1949
Ethel and John James at 41 13th Street, Mildura

1954 (extent of my access)
Ethel at 56 Cureton Ave, Mildura

With regard to one of the marriages found by Merlin:

Elecotral rolls show
1936 Edward Angus ALDERTON, horticulturalist, Cowra Ave Irymple (district of Mildura)
At the same address Eileen Elizabeth ALDERTON
1937 Edward is listed as a labourer and they are both at 126 Lime Ave, Mildura

No more entries for Edward but Eileen Elizabeth ALDERTON is still in Mildura in 1942 and 1954, at 75 Lemon Ave, Mildura

Looks as though the marriage index may have the wrong name.  (Eileen Elizabeth is Ethel's daughter, as listed by Merlin and Alison)

Property holders Electoral Roll
1887 Menindie Police Division
YANSCH Henry W J  Freehold   Darling River  Tulney Point

Having read the application for naturalisation on NAA, you will have a little more background on the John William Henry YANSCH/JANSCH.  I cannot see the SS VICTORIA arriving in Adelaide in 1857 however the date may not be correct as Johann Wilhelm Heinrich [John William Henry] would have only been  13 years of age.  He states he was born 23 Jul 1844 in Grünberg, Silesia, Prussia.

In 1908 his son August was located about Mildura and adopted son in Wentworth.  He states he doesn't know the location of his other son or daughter.

There are a couple more deaths in SA - I think it is necessary for your records to have the full information from the indexes.

JANSCH Carl Wilhelm
4 Apr 1873   2 years  Status Child  Relative Johann Wilhelm Heinrich JANSCH [Father]
Residence Julia Creek   Death Place Julia Creek   Cap 52/119

JANSCH Augustine Sarah
6 Mar 1875  9 months  Status Child  Father Henry JANSCH [Father]
Residence Julia Creek   Death Place Julia Creek    Kap 65/237

There is a possibility that the correct name was probably originally JAENSCH.

I wonder if it would be worthwhile purchasing a transcription of this death just on the slim chance it may have his wife's correct name.
4532/1923
YANSCH  John W H
78 years  Wentworth
District Wentworth

I can't see a burial record for him at the Wentworth Cemetery but he may not be buried there.  The death certificate would have his place of burial.

Possibly Mary Ann's death

Cando's Reply #26 explains why I was unable to find Ethel on Electoral Rolls of 1931, 1936, 1937 as she was enrolled with the surname ELTON.
However it seems that she and James Alexander ELTON were not at the same address in those years (possibly for the reason put forward by Cando).  Then she is on the rolls with surname YANSCH, (1942-54)  again at different addresses to him.  I note, though, that her death cert is in the name ELTON.

Olive Myrtle YANSCH is at the same address as John James YANSCH in Mildura in 1942, in 1943 she is enrolled at Block 427, Buronga (division of Wentworth).  I cannot see her after that.  Nor can I see John James YANSCH's wife Florence at all.

I can't find this marriage to end 1942 limit of marriage indexes.  As James John Maloney YANSCH married Florence Amy JONES in 1934 are we to assume that it may be his divorce in Nov 1940?  Anyway you may have all this information.

Sorry about that - misread age for year

Youre probably correct about the divorce (as usual)

I have found another child for the family of

Johann W H Jansch and Mary Ann Savarney

Marie Johanne JAENSCH born 16 Aug 1866 North Rhine, SA to Heinrich JAENSCH and Mary BROWNLEIGH

There are probably quite a few more......and with variations on the surname JANSCH/JAENSCH/ etc......however John Henry William did say in 1908 he had living three children - two sons and a daughter and an adopted son.

Birth in SA
JENSCH John William Edward
3 Feb 1869
Father John Henry William JENSCH    Mother Mary Ann BROWNLEY
At St Kitts   Ang 70/409

I wondered if this may be the above John's death.  Balranald is some distance from Wentworth but in the south western corner of NSW.

Death
7532/1945
YENSCH  John William Ernest
76 years  Wakool Shire  Labourer
District Balranald

I am really only speculating about the 1940's divorce however YANSCH is not a commonly occurring name.  I did note that Olive WILLIAMS was NOK in 1941 on John James YANSCH service record and perhaps that was Olive Myrtle who married John James.  His death certificate would give more information.

Cheers
Cando

Mary Ann Brown Lee (aged 18 years) married John Saverney (aged 35 years) on 3rd Nov 1858  at Christ Church, Kapunda, SA

Fathers given as Robert Brown Lee and John Saverney

Children born to this couple

John Saveeney 24 Jul 1859 at Julia Creek, SA
Mary Ann Savenny 19 Jan 1862 at Lady Gawler, Hd of Julia Creek, SA

John Savenney died 8 May 1864 aged 50 years, at Julia Creek, SA, Residence Anlaby, Julia Creek, SA

I have copied Surnames as recorded in indexes

This is the death certificate of Mary Ann Brownlee, wife of John Wilhelm ( Yensch ) , she is buried in Wentworth, separate from her husband who was buried in same cemetery but surname is slightly different variation. He is buried under the name of Yansch and his wife Mary Ann was buried as Yensch...
Mary Ann was born in India to British parents, her father was a soldier there at the time of her birth. Will also add her husbands death certificate.
It says here on her death certificate that she was born in India.

Hello everyone, I am a descendant of Johanna Mary Yansch (Marie Johanna Jansch) born 1866, daughter of John William Henry Yansch and Mary Anne Brownley. Reading the prior posts in the thread regarding the book about the Yansch family and the separate information about Mary Brownley, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to send me copies of the supporting documents regarding Mary Anne's parents or details of where the information was found, as well as the title of the book and maybe where I could obtain a copy. I have also found the arrival of the Yansch family in SA aboard the ship Victoria in 1857, which lists the family as follows:

Johann Carl Jensch Age 44 Occupation Landmann Prior Residence Gross Lisen, Prussia
Anna Dorothea (Nee Schneider) Age 39
Johanna Rosina Age 16
Johan August Gottfried Age 14
Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Age 12
Johanna Auguste Age 9
Carl Friedrich August Age 6
Johanna Dorothea Age 3
Carl August Age 1

Thanks in advance for helping me with this information, and I hope the shipping details may be of use to someone here.

Hi there,

I am the great grand daughter of Regina Bessie Yensch ( Yansch ) whose parents are Johann Henry Yensch & Mary Ann Brownlee. I see by your post that we share the same great great grandparents. My great grandmother and your great grandmother were sisters.
I have the death certificates of Johann & Mary.
Mary Ann Brownlee was born in India to british parents. Her father was a soldier stationed in India at the time of her birth. Her death cert also lists both her marriages.
There is a few Yensch books, spelling variations of Yansch,Yensch.
The main book on our family , the spelling is actually Yensch.
I have posted a photo of my great grandparents grave which you may have come across.
Am happy to help, send me a pm and I can send you the death cert.
Thanks,
Robyn

Welcome to Rootschat, djtoms.

I'm not sure what you were trying to do here, but you have repeated a quote twice and not made a comment.

Rather than hitting the quote button use 'Reply' which is located to the right of the page numbers.

Hi!
Wow! I have just come across all of this information, and I’m in awe of the amount of detail that has already been provided. This has filled so many gaps in my own family history on my mother’s side, but there are still so many questions !
My great grandmother was Regina Bessie Yensch / Butler. I am one of the granddaughters of Myron Butler (Tallangatta). For such a long time, many of my relatives have tried to find history of Regina Bessie, including details of her parents, her birth details and her children. I’ve read through all of the replies in this thread to date, and have enjoyed finding out some of the details we have been missing for such a long time.
Robyn F, I am very much interested in the Yensch family tree book you mentioned - would you mind telling me what it is called, who authored it, and how I can get a copy of it please?
Also Robyn F, most of the attachments you loaded in your replies appear to have been removed, and I’m not able to view them. Would it be possible for you to either add them again, or perhaps email them to me please?

I’m also very interested in the birth record for Regina Bessie - I have seen mention of Regina Bertha - was this her given name at birth (later changed to Regina Bessie?), or is it someone else’s record, or is it an error?
There is mention that Regina Bessie (Yensch) Butler and William Butler had 17 children, and 5 still births, however I have been advised by other sources that they may have in fact had 19 children, and one of those missing from the records was named Roy. Is anyone able to shed any further light on this?

Hi Everyone,

I have loved reading all this information about our past family members.
Im Mary Ann Yansch's (Brownlee) 3rd great granddaughter via Bessie Yansch.

I have recently started my family tree and am wondering if anyone has any more information regarding Mary Ann?

For the life of me, I can not find any birth or migration records for her all I know is that her father is Robert Brownlee.

Would anyone happen to know her mothers name etc or where it was found that she was born in India while her dad was serving for the UK as I can't find any service records fo him, only a Robert Brownlee also born in Scotland 1805 but with no ties to our family names.

Thank you

Hi Lilmaree,
I have just discovered that Regina (bessie) was my great great grandmother, her son Myron Butler was my nans (Joan) father. Do you have any information on her being Yorta Yorta, I have always thought that we had aboriginal in our family blood line but never knew it was so close, my grand mother use to deny that we had any indigenous roots, I wonder if she was ashamed of it. she passed in 2018 so I can not ask her. and Wow what a huge family we must have out there.
